Due to issues with Pb toxicity, there is an urgent need for high performance Pb-free alternatives to Pb-based piezoelectric ceramics. Although pure BaTiO3 material exhibits fairly low piezoelectric coefficients, further designing of such a material system greatly enhances the piezoelectric response by means of domain engineering, defects engineering, as well as phase boundary engineering. Especially after the discovery of a Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3–x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 system with extraordinarily high piezoelectric properties (d33 > 600 pC/N), BaTiO3-based piezoelectric ceramics are considered as one of the promising Pb-free substitutes. In the present contribution, we summarize the idea of designing high property BaTiO3 piezoceramic through domain engineering, defect-doping, as well as morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). In spite of its drawback of low Curie temperature, BaTiO3-based piezoelectric materials can be considered as an excellent model system for exploring the physics of highly piezoelectric materials. The relevant material design strategy in BaTiO3-based materials can provide guidelines for the next generation of Pb-free materials with even better piezoelectric properties that can be anticipated in the near future.

In this letter, we use transmission electron microscopy to study the microstructure feature of recently reported Pb-free piezoceramic Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 across its piezoelectricity-optimal morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) by varying composition and temperature, respectively. The domain structure evolutions during such processes show that in MPB regime, the domains become miniaturized down to nanometer size with a domain hierarchy, which coincides with the d33-maximum region. Further convergent beam electron diffraction measurement shows that rhombohedral and tetragonal crystal symmetries coexist among the miniaturized domains. Strong piezoelectricity reported in such a system is due to easy polarization rotation between the coexisting nano-scale tetragonal and rhombohedral domains.

Although dielectric energy-storing devices are frequently used in high voltage level, the fast growing on the portable and wearable electronics have been increasing the demand on the energy-storing devices at finite electric field strength. This paper proposes an approach on enhancing energy density under low electric field through compositionally inducing tricriticality in Ba(Ti,Sn)O3ferroelectric material system with enlarged dielectric response. The optimal dielectric permittivity at tricritical point can reach toεr = 5.4 × 104, and the associated energy density goes to around 30 mJ/cm3at the electric field of 10 kV/cm, which exceeds most of the selected ferroelectric materials at the same field strength. The microstructure nature for such a tricritical behavior shows polarization inhomogeneity in nanometeric scale, which indicates a large polarizability under external electric field. Further phenomenological Landau modeling suggests that large dielectric permittivity and energy density can be ascribed to the vanishing of energy barrier for polarization altering caused by tricriticality. Our results may shed light on developing energy-storing dielectrics with large permittivity and energy density at low electric field.

We employ transmission electron microscopy to explore the reason for large piezoelectricity (d33≈400pC/N) in a Pb-free 0.96(K0.5Na0.5)0.95Li0.05Nb0.93Sb0.07O3 −0.04BaZrO3 ceramic from microstructure. The result shows that the high piezoelectricity corresponds to a miniaturized nanodomain configuration in a domain hierarchy. The nanodomains disappear on heating accompanied by a reduction in d33 value. Further convergent beam electron diffraction study reveals a coexistence of tetragonal and orthorhombic phase, which indicates that large piezoelectricity of KNLNS0.07-BZ may stem from easy polarization rotation due to low polarization anisotropy on the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase boundary.
