Two published papers in Journal of Molecular Liquids inappropriately named the same equation in different ways. These errors are clarified in this comment to avoid a misunderstanding involving the determination of the band gap energy from diffuse reflectance measurements using Kubelka Munk model and Tauc plot.

Transparent binder is used to substitute conventional black asphalt binder and to provide light-colored pavements, whereas nano-TiO2 has the potential to promote photocatalytic and self-cleaning properties. Together, these materials provide multifunction effects and benefits when the pavement is submitted to high solar irradiation. This paper analyzes the physicochemical and rheological properties of a transparent binder modified with 0.5%, 3.0%, 6.0%, and 10.0% nano-TiO2 and compares it to the transparent base binder and conventional and polymer modified binders (PMB) without nano-TiO2. Their penetration, softening point, dynamic viscosity, master curve, black diagram, Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS), Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) were obtained. The transparent binders (base and modified) seem to be workable considering their viscosity, and exhibited values between the conventional binder and PMB with respect to rutting resistance, penetration, and softening point. They showed similar behavior to the PMB, demonstrating signs of polymer modification. The addition of TiO2 seemed to reduce fatigue life, except for the 0.5% content. Nevertheless, its addition in high contents increased the rutting resistance. The TiO2 modification seems to have little effect on the chemical functional indices. The best percentage of TiO2 was 0.5%, with respect to fatigue, and 10.0% with respect to permanent deformation.

Nowadays, there is increasing concern in transportation engineering about the use of techniques less harmful to the environment and also about road safety. Heterogeneous photocatalysis based on the application of semiconductor materials onto asphalt mixtures is a promising technology because it can mitigate air pollution and road accidents. The functionalized asphalt mixtures with photocatalytic capability can degrade pollutants, such as damaging gases and oil/grease adsorbed on their surface, from specific reactions triggered by sunlight photons, providing significant environmental and social benefits. In this article, a review of photocatalysis applied in asphalt mixtures is presented. The most important characteristics related to the functionalization of asphalt mixtures for photocatalytic applications and their corresponding characterization are presented, and the achieved main results are also discussed.

Photocatalytic asphalt mixtures have the capability of mitigating air quality problems and degrade oils/greases by using semiconductors. The techniques to do so can change their functional characteristics. This study aimed to analyse the functionalization effect on the essential surface characteristics, such as macrotexture, skid resistance, and microtexture. AC 14 and AC 6 mixtures were functionalised with nano-TiO2 and micro-ZnO by spraying and bulk incorporation. Mean Profile Depth, British Pendulum and microtexture amplitude parameters were evaluated. TiO2 application seemed to smooth the surface slightly. In dry condition, the skid resistance of functionalised asphalt and control mixtures was similar. In wet condition, the functionalization caused a maximum decrease of 7% in skid resistance. The amplitude parameters were not affected by any functionalization technique except the skewness of AC 14 with 6% TiO2 by bulk incorporation. Furthermore, the application of the semiconductors can be used without high impacts in texture and skid resistance.

This work reports the synthesis of nanocomposite photocatalytic materials based on nitrogen-doped TiO2nano, SiO2 and different percentages of HY zeolite (0, 12, 25 and 50%). These materials were characterized by using Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The nanocomposites, which presented an energy band gap of about 3.03 eV, were immobilized on cotton fabric and their self-cleaning properties were investigated by decolourization of rhodamine B (RhB) dye in aqueous solution under simulated solar irradiation. The fabrics coated with the photocatalysts, containing and not containing zeolites, showed the same RhB decolourization (about 95%) after 5 h, excluding the situation where a large amount of HY (50%) was used in the nanocomposites. However, results obtained from high performance liquid chromatography analysis depicted that in the presence of the HY zeolite a more effective RhB degradation was achieved. In fact, even after the use of five consecutive cycles, the RhB decolourization remained high (about 85%). Generally, the photodegradation of RhB solution in the presence of cotton fabrics functionalized with TiO2nano, TiO2nano-SiO2 and TiO2nano-SiO2-0.25 HY resulted in the formation of products that exhibited a similar cytotoxic effect when compared to the untreated RhB solution and subjected to the same tested concentrations and incubation times.

The photocatalytic asphalt mixture provides safer roads and mitigates the air quality problems, trapping and degrading organic compounds and also harmful gases. In this research, an asphalt mixture was functionalized with nano-TiO2 by bulk incorporation, using the contents 3 and 6%, and by spraying coating using an aqueous solution over its surface at different temperatures and rates. For bulk incorporation, the mechanical performance was assessed. The factors – application procedure, influence of temperature, spraying rate, incorporation percentage and TiO2 immobilization (from traffic and rain removal) – were evaluated based on Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation. For bulk incorporation, the best content nano-TiO2 was 3%. The temperature of the substrate has no influence on the photocatalytic results. The most effective spraying rates were 8 and 16 mL/cm2. Before simulating the traffic effect, the spraying coating technique was more effective than the bulk incorporation one. After this process, the opposite behaviour was detected. The rain simulation did not cause removal of the nanoparticles. Additionally, the exposed aggregates affected the photocatalytic efficiency, being important their contribution combined to the effect of nano-TiO2. To have the maximum benefit of the techniques studied, the ideal solution would be the combination of both, with negligible impact on mechanical performance.

Photocatalytic, superhydrophobic and self-cleaning capabilities were promoted on AC 6 and AC 14 asphalt mixtures by spraying of TiO2 and/or ZnO. Initially, physicochemical and morphological properties of bitumen samples were evaluated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy after the solution spraying of TiO2, ZnO and TiO2 ZnO. Then, to assure those capacities, Water Angle Contact and Photocatalytic Efficiency tests were carried out on both mixtures. Finally, mixtures were assessed mechanically through Indirect Tensile Strength. Photocatalytic, superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties were guaranteed for AC 14 with TiO2 and TiO2 ZnO and AC 6 with TiO2 ZnO without deteriorations.

This work is devoted to study the photocatalytic ability of cotton textiles functionalized with SiO2-TiO2 and SiO2-TiO2-HY composites to degrade a dye molecule. Coatings were prepared by sol-gel method and calcined at different temperatures in a range of 400–750 °C. FTIR confirmed the existence of SiOTi bounds and the band located in the region between 570 and 600 cm−1 was used to calculate the framework Si/Al ratio of HY in the SiO2-TiO2-HY composites. XRD confirmed the presence of nanosized TiO2 (anatase phase) in all calcined composites. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms showed a decrease in surface area and pore volume for higher calcination temperature. A simple mechanical process was used to impregnate the different composites on the cotton substrates. The photocatalytic activity of cotton textiles functionalized with SiO2-TiO2 and SiO2-TiO2-HY composites was tested via the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye under similar solar irradiation. The best catalytic performance was achieved with the SiO2-TiO2 and SiO2-TiO2-HY composites subjected to a calcination treatment at 400 °C, whereas SiO2-TiO2 presented a decolourization and mineralization around 94% and 89%, respectively, after 2 h of irradiation. Furthermore, the products of RhB degradation were analysed and identified by using HPLC-ESI–MS and ion chromatography techniques and a photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The authors thank CAPES from Brazil for the financial support of this work.
