It is well known that due to Industry 4.0 requirements and challenges, future research directions in production engineering will focus on the creation of intelligent sensors and their integration by means of intelligent platforms. Therefore, the key skill will be appropriate analysis and processing of signals recorded by these sensors, which may relate to manufacturing process parameters. The application of principal component analysis and logistic regression enables effective data processing. This has been shown using a real-world numerical example - the data related to cutter state identification based on signals generated during machining. This way, it has been proven, that the above methods may find practical application in condition monitoring systems. In particular, they may be highly helpful in real-time cutter state identification.

Dynamic industrial data growth necessitates the development of several new concepts of these data analysis that will allow to select not only the right data, but also to apply appropriate methods in order to extract knowledge from them. For this purpose, the possible use of decision trees as a decision support tool for a machining process data analysis was discussed in this article. With the use of the generated decision rules, we identify parameters that affect the state of a blade (blunt, sharp). In consequence that makes it possible to predict its future state at specific values of the identified parameters. Decision trees enable the analyses of the importance of each variable for the dependent variable. This makes it possible to analyse how each individual parameter and the relationships between them affect the condition of a cutter blade. The results of variables importance for a decision tree analysis can be used to determine the most important input variables, while rejecting those which do not affect the condition of a cutter blade. The study offers some promising results. It is confirmed by the achieved prediction model quality indicators.

Monitoring the condition of conveyor belt joints by measuring and continuously analysing changes in their length raises a number of research challenges. One of them is the need for a more advanced method of assessment of the condition of each individual joint. Suitable mathematical modelling that would allow to identify the change in the length of such joints over its life time could be considered as a potential solution. Therefore, the aim of this study was to indicate that on the basis of the operation history of such elements, it is possible to estimate the parameters of the time series model, allowing to identify the joints which should be observed more carefully due to the unfavourable changes occurring in them. As a results of this research aim - the article presents the methodology allowing to identify the proper model and the function estimated for the selected joint.

This paper presents an empirical study on the impact of maintenance function on more sustainable manufacturing processes. The work methodology comprises four stages. At first, ten factors of maintenance activities from a sustainable manufacturing point of view were identified. Then, in the second stage, the matrix of crossed impact multiplications applied to a classification (MICMAC) was carried out to categorize these factors based on their influence and dependence values. In the third stage, the criteria for evaluation of maintenance factors were defined, then the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP) was applied to determine their relative weights. In the last stage, the results of MICMAC and F-AHP analyses were used as inputs for the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (F-TOPIS) to generate aggregate scores and selection of the most important maintenance factors that have an impact on sustainable manufacturing processes. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the approach. It was observed that factors “Implementation of preventive and prognostic service strategies”, “The usage of M&O data collection and processing systems”, and “Modernization of machines and devices” are the major factors that support the realization of sustainable manufacturing process challenges.

The influence of irradiation should be considered in fatigue reliability analyses of reactor structures under irradiation conditions. In this study, the effects of irradiation hardening and irradiation embrittlement on fatigue performance parameters were quantified and a fatigue life prediction model was developed. Based on this model, which takes into account the cumulative effect of a neutron dose, the total fatigue damage was calculated according to Miner’s linear cumulative damage law, and the reliability analysis was carried out using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The case results show that the fatigue life acquired by taking into account the cumulative effect of irradiation was reduced by 24.3% compared with that acquired without considering the irradiation effect. Irradiation led to the increase of the fatigue life at low strains and its decrease at high strains, which is in accordance with the findings of an irradiation fatigue test. The rate of increase in the fatigue life decreased gradually with the increase of the neutron dose. The irradiation performance parameters had a small influence on fatigue reliability, while the fatigue strength coefficient and the elastic modulus had a great influence on the fatigue reliability. Compared with the current method, which uses a high safety factor to determine design parameters, a fatigue reliability analysis method taking into account the cumulative effect of irradiation could be more accurate in the reliability analysis and life prediction of reactor structures.

Criticality is considered as a fundamental category of production planning, maintenance process planning and management. The criticality assessment of machines and devices can be a structured set of activities allowing to identify failures which have the greatest potential impact on the company’s business goals. It can be also used to define maintenance strategies, investment strategies and development plans, assisting the company in prioritizing their allocations of financial resources to those machines and devices that are critical in accordance with the predefined business criteria. In a criticality assessment process many different and interacting criteria have to be taken into consideration, despite the fact that there is a high level of uncertainty related to various parameters. In addition, not all assessment criteria are equally important. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the weight of each criterion taking into account different requirements of machine criticality process stakeholders. That is why a novel model of a machine criticality assessment is proposed in this paper. The model extends the existing methods of assessing machines criticality, taking into account not only the importance of machine criticality assessment criteria, but also possible interactions between them.

The measurement of exhaust emissions is an important element of the vehicle type-approval. The tests in this area are carried out mainly under laboratory conditions, and the obligatory road tests in force since 2017 supplement them. One of the most important requirements in relation to the laboratory tests is the best possible representation of real traffic conditions, as well as ensuring the reliability of the results obtained. Laboratory measurement cycles carried out nowadays assume an unchangeable way of recreating the trip under specific measurement conditions. This is conducive to misuse and, in many cases, obtaining the results that do not reflect the actual exhaust emission. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an alternative test method that would ensure a better representation of the road traffic conditions and allow the test to be individualized according to the type of vehicle or the professional group that uses it. This is possible owing to the proposed, differentiated speed profile during the exhaust emission tests under the laboratory conditions, with simultaneous reliable reconstruction of the road traffic conditions during bench measurements. The article describes a new measurement method that meets these requirements, based on a random selection of measurement sections. It was also validated by comparing the obtained results with the actual exhaust emission recorded during road tests. It has been proven that the method developed corresponds to the random nature of road traffic conditions, while maintaining the similarity of the emissions of toxic exhaust components, and therefore constitutes an effective and expected alternative to the currently used type-approval procedures.

Effective transition from raw industrial data to knowledge-based executive actions without human action requires developing new analytical tools, what also means new challenges for expert and intelligent systems. Studies must be conducted especially on developing effective analytical solutions for intelligent modules of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems, that take advantage of data analysis and decision support tools to predict and prevent the potential failure of machines or its elements. This is why the idea of a new classifier for condition assessment and Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction as an expert system tool for real-time monitoring of the manufacturing process was presented. Based on monitoring and current system check data, a new method enabling both early prediction of the machine tool’s remaining useful life and its current condition classification was devised. Its failure and normal properties were distinguished as well. To this end, it was proposed that the remaining useful life prediction should be made via the combined use of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a classification tool and AutoRegressive and Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) based identification. This would provide process engineers and machine operators with an expert system that is easy to implement and use at the operational level, thus allowing them confidently perform technological processes, according to the acceptable failure probability.

Elements of the water distribution systems (WDS) as removable objects can be repaired or replaced, however their failures are difficult for analysis. The impact of WDS failures can be reduced if preventive actions are taken based on their potential of occurrences or if a failure occurs and is detected within a minimum period of time after its occurrence. This requires the development of a forensic system for WDS failures. This is why in this paper we will present an analysis of reliability data from a water supply sources consisting of deep wells taking into consideration additional, potential failure reasons. The aim of the work was also application possibility analysis of a multidimensional scaling method to identify the factors influencing on reliability of deep wells.

In this article we deal with modelling diagnostic data. They are the data measured during the operation of a conveyor belt. To be specific, we observe how the distances between measuring points change in time. The development of the distance between these points reflects the process of degradation at the point where the belt is connected with the other part. When the distance reaches its critical value, there is a threat of conveyor belt break leading to serious consequences. The modelling of belt degradation is performed with the Kalman filter applying the Local Linear Model (LLM).

The cost of energy consumed in the course of pumping water from its sources constitutes a considerable share of the total operating costs borne by a water company. In order to optimize the operation of a water pumping station, it is essential to devise an appropriate pumps schedule. The aim of the work was to develop a smart tool which would facilitate decision-making by the operator of a water intake, including a group of wells, supplying actual municipal waterworks. The tool creates a real-time schedule for wells and pumps integrated with them, which constitutes a basis for a final decision made by the operator, related to the degree and period of their usage. The main criterion of facilitating the decision-making pertained to achieving the minimum energy consumption during pumping water from a well to a reservoir tank, while simultaneously keeping all the wells on full stand-by. The schedule was prepared by means of binary linear programming. In this method, both the function of the goal and the limiting functions are linear, whereas the particular variables belong to the set {0,1}.
