Biography

Gareth Rees, Professor of Polar Geoinformatics at the Scott Polar Research Institute and Fellow of Christ's College, University of Cambridge. Physicist with research interests predominantly in the development and application of spaceborne remote sensing techniques to monitoring the dynamics of Arctic glaciated and vegetated terrain. Prof Rees is a member of the Climate and Environmental Dynamics, Glaciology and Glacial Geology, and Biogeography and Biogeomorphology groups. Professor Gareth Rees's major research interests lie at the intersection of environmental science and remote sensing, with a focus on high-latitude ecosystems. His work is characterized by a multi-faceted approach to understanding the dynamics of high-latitude vegetation and its interaction with climate change. This includes a long-term collaborative program alongside prestigious institutions such as the Geography Faculty of Moscow State University, British Antarctic Survey, the Russian Academy of Sciences, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, and the Arctic University of Norway. Together, they leverage spaceborne monitoring techniques to track tundra and forest changes in the Arctic and beyond, influenced by climate change, airborne industrial pollutants, and anthropogenic activities. Another significant area of Professor Gareth Rees's research is cryospheric remote sensing based on spaceborne and airborne methods for mapping glaciers' surface properties and monitoring snow cover changes.
