Lodging, a commonly occurring rice crop disaster, seriously reduces rice quality and production. Monitoring rice lodging after a typhoon event is essential for evaluating yield loss and formulating suitable remedial policies. The availability of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 open-access remote sensing data provides large-scale information with a short revisit time to be freely accessed. Data from these sources have been previously shown to identify lodged crops. In this study, therefore, Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data after a typhoon event were combined to enable monitoring of lodging rice to be quickly undertaken. In this context, the sensitivity of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) features (SF) and spectral indices (SI) extracted from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 to lodged rice were analyzed, and a model was constructed for selecting optimal sensitive parameters for lodging rice (OSPL). OSPL has high sensitivity to lodged rice and strong ability to distinguish lodged rice from healthy rice. After screening, Band 11 (SWIR-1) and Band 12 (SWIR-2) were identified as optimal spectral indices (OSI), and VV, VV + VH and Shannon Entropy were optimal SAR features (OSF). Three classification results of lodging rice were acquired using the Random Forest classification (RFC) method based on OSI, OSF and integrated OSI–OSF stack images, respectively. Results indicate that an overall level of accuracy of 91.29% was achieved with the combination of SAR and optical optimal parameters. The result was 2.91% and 6.05% better than solely using optical or SAR processes, respectively.

Vegetation is the functional subject in the wetland ecosystem and plays an irreplaceable role in biodiversity conservation. It is of great significance to monitor wetland vegetation for scientific assessment of the impact of vegetation on ecological environment and biodiversity. In this paper, a method for extracting wetland vegetation based on short time series Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data set was constructed. First, time series NDVI data were constructed using Sentinel-2 images. Then, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier was used to classify the wetland vegetation types. The distributions of the main wetland vegetation in the study area in 2018 and 2020 were got. Finally, the land cover transfer matrix was calculated to analyze the spatial pattern and change of wetland vegetation emphatically from 2018 to 2020. Based on 46 Sentinel-2 images acquired in 2018 and 2020, the spatial pattern and change of vegetation in the Yellow River Delta wetlands were extracted and analyzed in this paper. The results show that: (1) The method for extracting wetland vegetation in estuary delta based on PIE-Engine platform and short time series NDVI data constructed in this paper can effectively extract the wetland vegetation information. The overall accuracy of the classification results reached 90.47% in 2018 and 80.30% in 2020. The Kappa coefficient of the classification results are 0.874 in 2018 and 0.739 in 2020 respectively. Compared with the results from the random forest classification method and the maximum likelihood classification method, the accuracy is improved by 6.40% and 13.04%, and the Kappa coefficient is improved by 0.055 and 0.069. (2) There were significant changes in vegetation coverage in the Yellow River Delta wetlands from 2018 to 2020. The Spartina alterniflora increased by 3.74km2. The Suaeda salsa degraded seriously, and the total area decreased by 20.38km2. In addition, the increase of Spartina alterniflora effectively guaranteed the stability of the coastline in the study area. This study can provide a theoretical basis for wetlands vegetation classificaton, and the classificaton results can provide scientific reference for protecting the ecological environment of wetlands and maintaining ecological stability.

In the past 35 years, the natural coastline along Jiaozhou Bay has undergone extensive changes under the influence of human activities, and the coastal wetland area has been drastically reduced. Therefore, it is of great importance to study the spatio-temporal changes of the Jiaozhou Bay coastline, and their trends and causes, for sustainable economic development and the rational utilization of coastal resources. This paper constructed a comprehensive method for extracting the coastline information and change analysis based on long time series remote sensing data. Based on multi-spectral optical data and dual-polarization SAR data, the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and the Sentinel-1 Dual-polarized Water body Index (SDWI) combined with the Otsu threshold segmentation method were used to automatically extract the spatial distribution of coastline. The U-Net semantic segmentation model was used to classify the land cover types in the land direction of the coastline to count the coastline types. The End Point Rate (EPR) and Linear Regression Rate (LRR) were used to analyze the coastline changes, and the land reclamation was calculated according to the changing trends. The Pearson coefficient was used to study the reasons for the coastline changes. With an average time interval of 5 years, eight coastlines of Jiaozhou Bay in different years were extracted, and the coastline types were obtained. Then, the changes of the coastlines in Jiaozhou Bay from 1987 to 2022 were analyzed. The results show that: 1) Coastline type information provides important information for analyzing the coastline changes in long time series, and coastline information can be effectively extracted using multi-spectral optical data and dual-polarization SAR data. When the resolution of remote sensing data is 30m, the average error of the two types of data is better than one pixel, and the error between the data is about 1-2 pixels. 2) Based on the U-Net model, the overall accuracy of coastline classification using multi-spectral optical data and dual-polarization SAR data is 94.49% and 94.88%, respectively, with kappa coefficients of 0.9143 and 0.8949. 3) In the past 35 years, Jiaozhou Bay area has shown an obvious trend towards the ocean, with an average annual expansion of 16.723m. 4) The coastline of the Jiaozhou Bay area is dynamic. Due to the frequent human activities, the coastline has been reconstructed on a large scale, and the length of artificial coastline has increased significantly. The proportion of artificial coastline length has increased from 33.72% in 1987 to 59.33% in 2022. 5) In the past 35 years, the land reclamation area has reached 41.45km2, of which Shibei District, Licang District, and Huangdao District are the three most frequent areas, with an area of 34.62 km2.

Timely and accurate estimation of rice parameters plays a significant role in rice monitoring and yield forecasting for ensuring food security. Compact-polarimetric (CP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR), a good compromise between the dual- and quad-polarized SARs, is an important part of the new generation of Earth observation systems. In this paper, the ability of CP SAR data to retrieve rice biophysical parameters was explored using a modified water cloud model. The results showed that S1 was superior to other CP variables in rice height inversion with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.92 and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 5.81 cm. RL was the most suitable for inverting the volumetric water content of the rice canopy, with an R2 of 0.95 and a RMSE of 0.31 kg/m3. The m-χ decomposition produced the highest accuracies for the ear biomass: R2 was 0.89 and RMSE was 0.17 kg/m2. The highest accuracy of leaf area index (LAI) retrieval was obtained for RH (right circular transmit and horizontal linear receive) with an R2 of 0.79 and a RMSE of 0.33. This study illustrated the capability of CP SAR data with respect to retrieval of rice biophysical parameters, especially for height, volumetric water content of the rice canopy, and ear biomass, and this mode may offer the best option for rice-monitoring applications because of swath coverage.

In recent years, the Yellow River Delta has been affected by invasive species Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora), resulting in a fragile ecological environment. It is of great significance to monitor the ground object types in the Yellow River Delta wetlands. The classification accuracy based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscattering coefficient is limited by the small difference between some ground objects. To solve this problem, a decision tree classification method for extracting the ground object types in wetland combined time series SAR backscattering and coherence characteristics was proposed. The Yellow River Delta was taken as the study area and the 112 Sentinel-1A GRD data with VV/VH dual-polarization and 64 Sentinel-1A SLC data with VH polarization were used. The decision tree method was established, based on the annual mean VH and VV backscattering characteristics, the new constructed radar backscattering indices, and the annual mean VH coherence characteristics were suitable for extracting the wetlands in the Yellow River Delta. Then the classification results in the Yellow River Delta wetlands from 2018 to 2021 were obtained using the new method proposed in this paper. The results show that the overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of the proposed method w5ere 89.504% and 0.860, which were 9.992% and 0.127 higher than multi-temporal classification by Support Vector Machine classifier. Compared with the decision tree without coherence, the overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient were improved by 8.854% and 0.108. The spatial distributions of wetland types in the Yellow River Delta from 2018 to 2021 were obtained using the constructed decision tree. The spatio-temporal evolution analysis was conducted. The results showed that the area ofS. alternifloradecreased significantly in 2020 but it increased to the area of 2018 in 2021. In addition,S. alternifloraseriously affected the living space of Phragmites australis (P. australis) and in 4 years, 10.485 km2living space ofP. australiswas occupied byS. alterniflora. The proposed method can provide a theoretical basis for higher accuracy SAR wetland classification and the monitoring results can provide an effective reference for local wetland protection.

It is of great significance to monitor sea ice for relieving and preventing sea ice disasters. In this paper, the growth and development of sea ice in Liaodong Bay of Bohai Sea in China were monitored using Sentinel-2 remote sensing data during the freezing period from January to March in 2018. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the spectral characteristics of seawater and sea ice in visible bands, supplemented by the Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), we proposed a new method based on decision tree classification for extracting sea ice types in Liaodong Bay of Bohai Sea. Using the remote sensing data of eight satellite overpasses acquired from Sentinel-2A/B satellites, the distribution and area of the different sea ice types in Liaodong Bay during the freezing period of 2017/2018 were obtained. Compared with the maximum likelihood (ML) classification method and the support vector machine (SVM) classification method, the proposed method has higher accuracy when discriminating the sea ice types, which proved the new method proposed in this paper is suitable for extracting sea ice types from Sentinel-2 optical remote sensing data in Liaodong Bay. And its classification accuracy reaches 88.05. The whole process of evolution such as the growth and development of sea ice in Liaodong Bay during the freezing period from January to March in 2018 was monitored. The maximum area of sea ice was detected on 27 January 2018, about 10,187km2. At last, the quantitative relationship model between the sea ice area and the mean near-surface temperature derived by MODIS data in Liaodong Bay was established. Through research, we found that the mean near-surface temperature was the most important factor for affecting the formation and melt of sea ice in Liaodong Bay.
