Research background: Risk-taking is the basis for sustainable development of enterprise. It was clear that the influence COVID-19 epidemic on the global market economy has increased operational risks for businesses. The semiconductor industry has high operating risks and financial risks. Moderate financial flexibility (FF) can improve the ability of semiconductor enterprises to acquire financial resources in real time, calmly cope with the impact of uncertainties in operation, improve investment opportunities, and enhance sustainable operation. It is therefore interesting to study the influence of FF on enterprise risk-taking (ERT). Purpose of the article: The aim of the contribution is to explore the effect of FF on ERT within Taiwan?s semiconductor industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic period, and investigate whether ERT varies with semiconductor industry characteristic. Methods: Data from first three quarters of 2020, from multinational semiconductor firms listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE), were collected and analyzed. Fixed effects regression with heteroscedasticity adjustment used to evaluate the influence of FF on the ERT of Taiwan?s semiconductor industry. Furthermore, in order to corroborate and support the reliability of the results, this research also used the different measures of ERT and Quantile regression (median regression) in the research model to check the robustness. Findings & value added: Empirical results indicate that FF has a U-shaped effect on ERT for multinational semiconductor firms listed on the TSE, particularly within the integrated circuits (IC) manufacturing industry. Additionally, FF also has a U-shaped effect on ERT for the asset-light semiconductor and IC manufacturing industries. This article also suggests that for the asset-light semiconductor and IC manufacturing industries, the optimal inflection points are 1.1397 and 0.9729, respectively. Based on the consequences of this study, it is suggested that Taiwan?s semiconductor industry should reasonably maintain FF and focus on the liquidity risk management for the long term value added, even after the COVID-19 pandemic period.

During the pandemic, quarantine hotel workers face a higher risk of infection while they host quarantine guests from overseas. This study’s aim is to gain an understanding of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of quarantine hotel workers in China. A total of 170 participants took part in a cross-sectional survey to assess the KAP of quarantine hotel workers in China, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The chi-square test, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), descriptive analysis, and binary logistic regression were used to examine the sociodemographic factors associated with KAP levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that 62.41% have good knowledge, 94.7% have a positive attitude towards COVID-19, but only 78.2% have good practices. Most quarantine hotel workers (95.3%) are confident that COVID-19 will be successfully controlled and that China is handling the COVID-19 crisis well (98.8%). Most quarantine hotel workers are also taking personal precautions, such as avoiding crowds (80.6%) and wearing facemasks (97.6%). The results evidence that quarantine hotel workers in China have acquired the necessary knowledge, positive attitudes and proactive practices in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study can provide a reference for quarantine hotel workers and their targeted education and intervention.

This study aims to evaluate the effects of leader-member exchange (LMX) on job and life satisfaction among nurses in China and to examine the mediating effect of individual and collaborative job crafting between LMX and job and life satisfaction. The study recruited 263 nurses who worked in hospitals in Zhejiang province, China. A set of self-administered questionnaires were used to measure the variables of LMX, job crafting, job and life satisfaction. The data was analyzed using the partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The results reveal that LMX has a significant positive influence on job crafting and job satisfaction. Collaborative job crafting has a significant positive influence on the job satisfaction of nurses, whereas individual job crafting does not. Moreover, LMX will affect job satisfaction and life satisfaction through a partial mediating effect of both individual and collaborative job crafting. Finally, the article discusses the academically and practical implications, and also provide some suggestions and directions for the future research.

Financial flexibility refers to the ability of a firm to respond effectively to unanticipated shocks to its cash flows or its investment opportunities and is a key factor in the sustainable development of enterprise. This article explores the effect of financial flexibility on the enterprise performance of Taiwan’s manufacturing industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data for the first and second quarter of 2020 from companies listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange were collected and analyzed. The results indicate that for listed manufacturing companies on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, financial flexibility has a significant and positive effect on enterprise performance (return on assets, ROA), particularly in the asset-heavy manufacturing industry. However, financial flexibility has no significant effect on the enterprise performance of the asset-light manufacturing industry or the semiconductor industry. This study also show evidence that Taiwan’s asset-light manufacturing industry suffered the most from the COVID-19 crisis, which is not conducive to its sustainable development. In summary, the results show that Taiwan’s manufacturing industry has poor financial flexibility and one of the worst ROA during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the results of this research, effective suggestions to rationally retain financial flexibility and pay more attention to liquidity risk management for sustainable development are proposed for Taiwan’s manufacturing industry.

Carbon cap-and-trade and carbon offsets are common and important carbon emission reduction policies in many countries. In addition, carbon emissions from business activities can be effectively reduced through specific capital investments in green technologies. Nevertheless, such capital investments are costly and not all enterprises can afford these investments. Therefore, if all members of a supply chain agree to share the investments in the facilities, the supply chain can reduce carbon emissions and generate more profit. Under carbon cap-and-trade and carbon tax policies, this study proposes a production–inventory model in which the buyer and vendor in the integrated supply chain agree to co-invest funds to reduce carbon emissions. We planned to integrate production, delivery, replenishment, and technology to reduce carbon emissions so as to maximize the total profit of the supply chain system. Several examples are simulated and the sensitivity analysis of the main parameters is carried out. The optimal solutions and joint total profit under various carbon emission policies are also compared. The future carbon emission control trend is expected to enable companies to share risks by co-investing and developing sustainable supply chains.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a far-reaching and unprecedented influence on economies worldwide. It has also impacted on the global population’s mental health and caused negative psychosocial effects, which may lead to psychological crises. During the pandemic, the challenges for quarantine hotel employees are not only the increased workloads created by operating a quarantine hotel but also high psychological stress associated with job insecurity, risk of exposure and contagion for themselves, their friends and families. This research attempts to explore COVID-19-related depression, anxiety, and stress among quarantine hotel employees in China. The mental health of quarantine hotel employees, who have faced unprecedented changes, is paramount while they provide hospitality and care for healthcare workers and quarantine guests during mandatory quarantine periods. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that applied convenience sampling to collect questionnaire samples from 170 quarantine hotel employees in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China, during the COVID-19 pandemic, from May 20 to June 10, 2020. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used to collect data. The study uses descriptive analysis, chi-square test and binary logistic regression to examine the sociodemographic factors associated with depression, anxiety and stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: The results reveal that 43.5% of respondents report moderate to extremely severe symptoms of depression; 68.2% have moderate to extremely severe anxiety symptoms; and 8.2% indicated moderate to extremely severe stress symptoms. Quarantine hotel employees who have a higher level of education are less likely to experience anxiety, and those with higher incomes are less likely to experience depression. Discussion: In order to mitigate the increasing levels of anxiety and depression among their staff, quarantine hoteliers or managers urgently need to implement mental health assistance programs, such as providing extra training in hygiene and knowledge about COVID-19, offering online counseling and psychological support services, training in positive thinking, encouraging staff to keep in touch with their personal support networks, and constructing a resilience model.

Low price or convenience? What is more important for online and offline bookings? For the sustainable development of the hospitality industry, it is necessary to know the opinions of customers about their online/offline hotel booking experiences. This study aimed to predict the customers’ online/offline booking behavior toward a resort hotel in Taiwan by adapting the marketing mix elements. We first designed and executed a detailed questionnaire involving approximately 300 respondents from a five-star hotel in Taiwan, used hypothesis testing to extract important factors from the data, and finally used logistic regression of these factors to predict the customer choices effectively. The study results show that the majority of the customers believe that booking hotel services online provides for a broader choice, offers more discounts and more privacy than available while booking offline, and is cheaper, faster, and more reliable and convenient. The outcomes of logistic regression confirm that “broad choice,” but not “low price” has the most significant impact on the customers booking a resort accommodation online or offline. Furthermore, the results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) show that the younger customers (under the age of 45) and those with university degrees are significantly more likely to make the reservations online for a resort. The findings and the recommendations can provide valuable inputs to the resort industry practitioners in Taiwan for improving the online booking services.

In recent years, the bakery market has grown rapidly. Alongside its growth and fast change, it is very important to comprehend the productivity change of the bakery industry. Nowadays, effective management is more and more important to ensure the sustainable development of enterprises. Thus, productivity change of 22 self-owned stores of a famous bakery company (85 °C) from 2011 to 2016 was quantitatively analyzed and evaluated by adopting Malmquist index model in this study. Based on the Malmquist index model, the overall mean for total productivity change of 85 °C increased slightly from 2011 to 2016, and the productivity change was easily affected by technical progress. Moreover, the results also show that the north-district self-owned stores (which are located in subtropical climate) have the worst technical progress and total factor productivity change during 2011–2016 period by adopting the non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn post-hoc test.

Recently, sustainability management has developed in the hospitality industry. Green restaurants have been progressively joining the hospitality industry. Consumer patronage determines the sustainable development of the green restaurant. This paper aims to explore the structural relationships among perceived values (hedonic and utilitarian values), consumer preference and behavior intentions of the green restaurant. A total of 278 valid questionnaires were collected, and the partial least squares (PLS) method was utilized to measure and test the research hypotheses. The study presents empirical evidence showing that hedonic and utilitarian values have significantly and positively affected consumer preferences for green restaurants and that utilitarian value and customer preferences have significantly and positively influenced behavior intentions of green restaurant. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate that consumer preferences partially mediate the relationships between utilitarian value and behavior intentions of the green restaurant. Finally, theoretical and practical implications are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided.

:Under an intense internationally competitive business environment, it is important to understand the production efficiency of the baking industry, where efficient management is becoming increasingly important to ensure the sustainable development of the company. Thus, this study uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) to appraise the performance of a well-known baking company (85°C) and uses input and output constructs to measure its technical efficiency and scale efficiency scores to understand the major reasons for efficiency losses from 2011 to 2016. The empirical results indicate that low technical efficiency is the major reason for lower pure technical efficiency, since the scale efficiency is higher than pure technical efficiency. This means 85°C is still improving overall operating efficiency and space efficiency. Moreover, the results also show that the III-generation operations style is more technically efficient and pure-technically efficient compared to those of I-generation and II-generation. Furthermore, the company’s financial performance is dependent upon the producer's ability to stay on the production frontier due to the result of a positive relationship between return on assets (ROA) and technical efficiency. Last but not least, this study shows that 85°C can gain higher performance and efficiency by enhancing technical efficiency and reinforcing strategic alignments with business goals.

Nursing shortage is a serious problem in Taiwan. The objective of this paper is to investigate the role of supervisor support (SS) in the work-to-family conflict (WFC) and burnout relationship that impacts the professional commitment (PC) amongst nurses. Self-reporting data was collected from 410 nurses. A confirmed factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the validity of dimensions. A hierarchical regression analysis (HRA) and the correlation matrix were used to test the hypotheses. The collected data shows that SS strongly moderates WFCburnout relationship after HRA analysis. The moderating effects of SS suggest that through SS, WFC’s impacts on burnout diminish, and thus SS enhances PC of nurses. It avoids high turnover in the nursing profession. The results conclude that the supervisors of nurses should take the initiative to identify which nurse under supervision is facing a WFC problem, and support her to avoid the nurse’s burnout, and thus reduce nurse turnover rate.

Human resource management (HRM) practices have been recognized increasingly as a basis for achieving competitive advantage. However, conceptualizing HRM in the project context is still underdeveloped. The primary purpose of this study is to validate a framework for assessing the associations among HRM practices, project success, and organizational benefit in new product development (NPD) firms. The study also evaluates the moderating role of working environment factors in the relationship between HRM practices and NPD project success. The analyses of HRM practices and relationships with NPD project success and organizational benefit are based on an industry-wide survey in the Taiwanese high-tech industry. The results suggest that implementation of HRM practices contribute significantly to NPD project success, which subsequently bringing a number of potential benefits to a firm. In addition, the findings indicate that the positive relationship between HRM practices and NPD project success depends on work hours and time availability.

When a supplier announces an impending price increase due to take effect at a certain time in the future, it is important for each retailer to decide whether to purchase additional stock to take advantage of the present lower price. This study explores the possible effects of price increases on a retailer's replenishment policy when the special order quantity is limited and the rate of deterioration of the goods is assumed to be constant. The two situations discussed in this study are as follows: (1) when the special order time coincides with the retailer's replenishment time and (2) when the special order time occurs during the retailer's sales period. By analysing the total cost savings between special and regular orders during the depletion time of the special order quantity, the optimal order policy for each situation can be determined. We provide several numerical examples to illustrate the theories in practice. Additionally, we conduct a sensitivity analysis on the optimal solution with respect to the main parameters.

This study validates a model for assessing the relationships among a project manager’s leadership style, teamwork, project performance, and stakeholder satisfaction. It determines whether the effect of leadership style on project performance can be mediated by teamwork. An industry-wide survey measured a project manager’s leadership style, teamwork, and project outcomes in project performance and stakeholder satisfaction. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach confirmed this research model. Analyses show that a project manager who adopts transactional and transformational leadership can improve teamwork and capital facility project performance. Additionally, stakeholder satisfaction can be achieved with high levels of project success in schedule, cost, and quality performance. These findings show that teamwork can partially mediate relationships between leadership style and project performance.

This study describes the use of the new model of environmental behavior, which links altruism with the theory of planned behavior (TPB), to predict the relatively difficult behavioral intention of visiting a green hotel in Taiwan. The objectives of the study are threefold. First, the authors empirically examine how individual characteristics of the TPB model affect traveler intention to visit green hotels; second, they apply a TPB model to construct an amended model that focuses on altruism, imported from psychology-based research. Third, by capturing the affective component that motivates behavioral intention, the altruism construct will help bolster the TPB model to the domain of visiting a green hotel. The findings show that attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and altruism all positively affect customer intention to visit a green hotel. This study also derives wider implications for managers in the hospitality industry, both from a theoretical and practical viewpoint.

This article considers the problem of trajectory tracking control for a miniature fixed-wing unmanned air vehicle (UAV). With the UAV equipped with longitudinal and lateral autopilots, we adopt a kinematic model that takes into account the fact that the heading of the UAV is controlled by its roll motion and the autopilot responses to air speed and roll control commands are first order in nature. Backstepping techniques are applied to derive air speed and roll control commands from known air speed and heading control laws that explicitly account for air speed and heading rate constraints of the UAV. Regarding inaccurately known autopilot constants, a parameter adaptation technique is used to estimate autopilot constants. High-fidelity simulation results on a six degree-of-freedom (DOF) 12-state fixed-wing UAV model are presented to show the effectiveness of our approach.
