Thin cupric oxide (Cu2O) nanobelts with width of few tens of nanometers to few hundreds of nanometers were fabricated in anhydrous ethanol on nanoporous copper templates that was prepared via dealloying amorphous Ti40Cu60 ribbons in hydrofluoric acid solutions at 348 K. The Cu2O octahedral particles preferentially form in the water, and nanobelts readily undergo the growth along the lengthwise and widthwise in the anhydrous ethanol. The ethanol molecules serve as stabilizing or capping reagents, and play a key role of the formation of two-dimensional Cu2O nanobelts. Cu atoms at weak sites (i.e., twin boundary) on the nanoporous Cu ligaments are ionized to form Cu2+ cations, and then react with OH− to form Cu2O and H2O. The two-dimensional growth of Cu2O nanostructure is preferred in anhydrous ethanol due to the suppression of random growth of Cu2O nanoarchitectures by ethanol. Cu2O nanobelts have superior photodegradation performance of methyl orange, three times higher than nanoporous Cu.

Two types of cupric oxide (Cu2O) nanoarchitectures (nanobelts and nanopetal networks) have been achieved via immersion nanoporous copper (NPC) templates in anhydrous ethanol. NPC templates with different defect densities have been prepared by dealloying amorphous Ti60Cu40 ribbons in a mixture solution of hydrofluoric acid and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with different ratios of HF/PVP. Both a water molecule reactant acting as OH− reservoir and the ethanol molecule serving as stabilizing or capping reagent for inhibiting the random growth of Cu2Oplayed a role of the formation of 2-dimensional Cu2O nanoarchitectures. Cu2O nanobelts are preferred to form in anhydrous ethanol on the NPC templates from Ti60Cu40 ribbons dealloying in the solution with low HF concentration and small addition of PVP; and Cu2O nanopetals are tended to grow in anhydrous ethanol from the NPC templates from Ti60Cu40 ribbons dealloying in the solution with high HF concentration and large addition of PVP. With increasing the immersion time in anhydrous ethanol, Cu2O nanopetals united together to create porous networks about 300 nm in thickness. The defect sites (i.e., twin boundary) on nanoporous Cu ligaments preferentially served as nucleation sites for Cu2O nanocrystals, and the higher defect density leads to the formation of uniform Cu2O layer. Synergistic effect of initial microstructure of NPC templates and stabilizing agent of ethanol molecule results in different Cu2O nanoarchitectures.

A self-designed Ti-35421 (Ti-3Al-5Mo-4Cr-2Zr-1Fe wt%) titanium alloy is a new type of low-cost high strength titanium alloy. In order to understand the hot deformation behavior of Ti-35421 alloy, isothermal compression tests were carried out under a deformation temperature range of 750–930 °C with a strain rate range of 0.01–10 s−1 in this study. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was used to characterize the microstructure prior to and post hot deformation. The results show that the stress–strain curves have obvious yielding behavior at a high strain rate (>0.1 s−1). As the deformation temperature increases and the strain rate decreases, the α phase content gradually decreases in the α + β phase region. Meanwhile, spheroidization and precipitation of α phase are prone to occur in the α + β phase region. From the EBSD analysis, the volume fraction of recrystallized grains was very low, so dynamic recovery (DRV) is the dominant deformation mechanism of Ti-35421 alloy. In addition to DRV, Ti-35421 alloy is more likely to occur in continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) than discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX).

It is well known that adding elements, especially β-Ti stabilizers, are holding a significant effect on titanium alloy strength due to the solution and precipitate strengthening mechanisms. In order to reveal the Fe strengthening mechanism in titanium, this study investigate the effect of Fe on the stability of β-Ti and the phase transition between α, β and ω phase with first-principle calculations. According to our study, Fe is a strong β-Ti phase stabilizer could owe to the 3d orbital into eg and t2g states which results in strong hybridization between Fe-d orbital and Ti-d orbital. The phase transition from ω to β or from α to β becomes easier for Fe-doped Ti compared to pure titanium. Based on our results, it is found that one added Fe atom can lead the phase transition (ω → β) of at least nine titanium atoms, which further proves that Fe has a strong stabilizing effect on β-Ti phase. This result provides a solid guide for the future design of high-strength titanium with the addition of Fe.

In order to discern the effect of rare earth element Er addition on grain refinement of the most widely used titanium alloy Ti6Al4V, new erbium modified Ti6Al4V alloys with compositions of Ti6Al4V-xEr (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 wt %) were developed and investigated for their microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties in comparison with their unmodified baseline alloy. Microstructural examinations revealed that, by adding Er, (1) the microstructure primarily retained a two-phase structure consisting of α and β, (2) remarkable grain refining occurred, and (3) some Er2O3 and Al2Er disperses were formed largely around the β phase and near the grain boundaries. Mechanical property measurements evidenced an overall enhancement under tension and hardness tests. An increase in both strength and plasticity with increasing Er content was obtained but followed by a drop, while a gradual monotonous improvement in hardness was achieved. The Ti6Al4V-0.2Er alloy exhibits optimal mechanical properties.

The aim of this study was to investigate the corrosion resistance of ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ti-6Al-7Nb fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and coarse-grained (CG) Ti- 6Al- 7Nb. The microstructure of each specimen was investigated by the electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) method. The corrosion behavior of each specimen was determined by electrochemical measurement in Ringer’s solution. The surface corroded morphologies and oxide film formed on Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy after electrochemical measurement were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). EBSD investigation shows that the grain size of UFG Ti-6Al-7Nb decreased to ~0.4 µm, accompanied by low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) accounting for 39%. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicated that UFG Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy possessed a better corrosion resistance. The surface corroded morphologies revealed many small and shallow corrosion pits, which can be attributed to the good compactness of the oxide film and a rapid self- repairing ability of the UFG Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy.
