Dendrobium huoshanense, a traditional medicinal and food homologous plant, belongs to the family Orchidaceae and has a long history of medicinal use. It is reported that the stem of D. huoshanense has a variety of bioactive ingredients such as polysaccharides, flavonoids, sesquiterpenes, phenols, etc. These bioactive ingredients make D. huoshanense remarkable for its pharmacological effects on anti-tumor, immunomodulation, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and anticataract activities. In recent years, its rich pharmacological activities have attracted extensive attention. However, there is no systematic review focusing on the chemical compositions and pharmacological effects of D. huoshanense. Therefore, the present review aims to summarize current research on the chemical compositions and pharmacological activities of D. huoshanense. This study provides valuable references and promising ideas for further investigations of D. huoshanense.

Lipid metabolism disorders are widely acknowledged as crucial risk factors for a range of metabolic diseases, including hyperlipidemia, obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and atherosclerosis. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota is considered a potential mechanism of action in lipid metabolism disorders. Dendrobium huoshanense C.Z. Tang et S.J. Cheng (DH), an important edible and medicinal Chinese herb, has been shown to regulate the gut flora disorders and improve intestinal health. However, DH inhibits lipid metabolism disorders by regulating the gut flora remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the effect of the gut flora on improving blood lipid levels in mice that fed a high-fat diet supplemented with DH. Mice were randomly divided into normal control (CTR), high-fat diet (HFD), 2.25mg/kg/day simvastatin (SIM), 300mg/kg/day DH (LD-DH), and 600mg/kg/day DH (HD-DH) groups for 14weeks. Changes in serum and liver lipid levels and liver function were analyzed. Changes in intestinal microbiota and fecal metabolites were assessed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. The relationships among lipids, intestinal microbiota, and fecal metabolites were analyzed using Pearsons correlation analysis to reveal the mechanism of action of DH against lipid metabolism disorders. The results indicated that DH effectively improved the lipid profiles in both the serum and liver of HFD mice. DH was also found to alter the structure of the gut flora, especially the relative abundances of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum and B. animalis, which dramatically increased with DH. Pearsons correlation analysis indicated that DH may mainly alter metabolites (amino acid metabolites, bile acid metabolites, lipid metabolites, etc.) to regulate lipid metabolism via the metabolic ability of the gut flora. B. pseudolongum and B. animalis may be the dominant bacterial species in the gut microbiota and play key roles in the alleviation of lipid metabolism disorders caused by HFD.

The confusing use of Polygonati Rhizoma (PR) and Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (POR) poses an unpredictable threat to the health of consumers. Sensitive, nondestructive, rapid, and multicomponent techniques for their detection are sought after. In this study, a low-cost, short-wavelength (8981668nm), and handheld near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer combined with multivariate spectral evaluation methods was used to establish calibration models for identifying PR and POR. NIR spectra were treated with a standard normal variate (SNV) before performing chemometric approaches. Then principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were tested for calibration model development. The PCA results showed that spectral differences existed between the two herbs. However, the evaluation techniques could not separate them with the required accuracy. The PLS-DA calibration model, on the other hand, could separate the two herbs according to their spectral information with the prediction accuracy of >98.3. Thus, it has been proven that a rapid, green, and low-cost method to support on-site and practical inspection through a handheld NIR instrument has been established to identify PR and POR and ensure the safety of the clinical medication.
