The detection of cracks is a crucial task in monitoring structural health and ensuring structural safety. The manual process of crack detection is painstakingly time‐consuming and suffers from subjective judgments of inspectors. This study establishes an intelligent model based on image processing techniques for automatic crack recognition and analyses. In the new model, a gray intensity adjustment method, called Min‐Max Gray Level Discrimination (M2GLD), is proposed to preprocess the image thresholded by the Otsu method. The goal of this gray intensity adjustment method is to meliorate the accuracy of the crack detection results. Experimental results point out that the integration of M2GLD and the Otsu method, followed by other shape analysis algorithms, can successfully detect crack defects in digital images. Therefore, the constructed model can be a useful tool for building management agencies and construction engineers in the task of structure maintenance.

This study establishes an artificial intelligence (AI) model for detecting pothole on asphalt pavement surface. Image processing methods including Gaussian filter, steerable filter, and integral projection are utilized for extracting features from digital images. A data set consisting of 200 image samples has been collected to train and validate the predictive performance of two machine learning algorithms including the least squares support vector machine (LS‐SVM) and the artificial neural network (ANN). Experimental results obtained from a repeated subsampling process with 20 runs show that both LS‐SVM and ANN are capable methods for pothole detection with classification accuracy rate larger than 85%. In addition, the LS‐SVM has achieved the highest classification accuracy rate (roughly 89%) and the area under the curve (0.96). Accordingly, the proposed AI approach used with LS‐SVM can be very potential to assist transportation agencies and road inspectors in the task of pavement pothole detection.

Timely and accurate detection of asphalt pavement crack is very crucial in pavement maintenance. This study establishes an intelligent approach for automatic recognition of pavement crack patterns. Image processing techniques including nonlocal means, steerable filter, projective integral, and image thresholding are used synergistically to extract useful features from digital images. A machine learning model that comprises the multiclass support vector machine and artificial bee colony optimization algorithm is constructed to perform pavement crack classification. Based on feature analysis, a set of features derived from the image projective integral is found to significantly enhance the prediction performance. Experimental results supported by statistical test demonstrate that the proposed integration of image processing and machine learning model achieves an outstanding classification accuracy rate that is more than 96%. Hence, the proposed approach is a promising alternative to assist transportation agencies in pavement inspection and maintenance planning.

Flash floods are widely recognized as one of the most devastating natural hazards in the world, therefore prediction of flash flood-prone areas is crucial for public safety and emergency management. This research proposes a new methodology for spatial prediction of flash floods based on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery and a new hybrid machine learning technique. The SAR imagery is used to detect flash flood inundation areas, whereas the new machine learning technique, which is a hybrid of the firefly algorithm (FA), Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) backpropagation, and an artificial neural network (named as FA-LM-ANN), was used to construct the prediction model. The Bac Ha Bao Yen (BHBY) area in the northwestern region of Vietnam was used as a case study. Accordingly, a Geographical Information System (GIS) database was constructed using 12 input variables (elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, topographic wetness index, stream power index, toposhade, stream density, rainfall, normalized difference vegetation index, soil type, and lithology) and subsequently the output of flood inundation areas was mapped. Using the database and FA-LM-ANN, the flash flood model was trained and verified. The model performance was validated via various performance metrics including the classification accuracy rate, the area under the curve, precision, and recall. Then, the flash flood model that produced the highest performance was compared with benchmarks, indicating that the combination of FA and LM backpropagation is proven to be very effective and the proposed FA-LM-ANN is a new and useful tool for predicting flash flood susceptibility.
