Human motion is a daily and rhythmic activity. The exoskeleton concept is a very positive scientific approach for human rehabilitation in case of lower limb impairment. Although the exoskeleton shows potential, it is not yet applied extensively in clinical rehabilitation. In this research, a fuzzy based control algorithm is proposed for lower limb exoskeletons during sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit movements. Surface electromyograms (EMGs) are acquired from the vastus lateralis muscle using a wearable EMG sensor. The resultant acceleration angle along the z-axis is determined from a kinematics sensor. Twenty volunteers were chosen to perform the experiments. The whole experiment was accomplished in two phases. In the first phase, acceleration angles and EMG data were acquired from the volunteers during both sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit motions. During sit-to-stand movements, the average acceleration angle at activation was 11°–48° and the EMG varied from −0.19 mV to +0.19 mV. On the other hand, during stand-to-sit movements, the average acceleration angle was found to be 57.5°–108° at the activation point and the EMG varied from −0.32 mV to +0.32 mV. In the second phase, a fuzzy controller was designed from the experimental data. The controller was tested and validated with both offline and real time data using LabVIEW.

The springback is one of the major defects associated with sheet metal–forming industry. The objective of this study is to minimize the springback and the process variability in V-bending operation. In all, 11 process parameters, the bending angle, sheet thickness, material type, material texture, punch speed, punch holding time, sheet width, punch radius, lubrication, warm working, and repeat bending, have been considered, and their effect on springback has been studied. Based on Taguchi L12211 orthogonal array design, bending tests were conducted on two types of aluminum sheets (Al 1100 and Al 6061), and investigation was focused mainly on the effect of process variables on the springback. As springback is a process defect, the smaller the better signal-to-noise ratio is utilized in the optimization process. Based on the analysis of variance results, the percentage contribution of each factor to springback was calculated and optimum levels of entire factors were ascertained. The punch holding time, material type, and lubrication were found to be the most significant factors affecting springback. The combined effect of these parameters on springback was about 70%. From the confirmation tests, there has been significant improvement in the standard deviation of the mean value of springback.

Injection molding has been found to be an efficient and cost-effective manufacturing technique for the production of a wide variety of parts and components at both macro- and microscale. This is attributed to the application of robust design and process development. However, every manufacturing technique is challenged by quality issues and part defects, but tackled by continuous improvement framework(s). This systematic monitoring and control approach of dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties, and surface quality of the finished part strongly depend on process conditions at different production stage. Therefore, the aim of this study is to review process development of micro-metal injection molding; focusing on critical factors influencing part quality and optimization of process parameters. The critical factors that influenced the finished part quality are part design, mold design, material selection, machine, and process conditions. Optimizing mold temperature, melt temperature, injection speed, injection pressure, cooling time, packing, and holding parameters improve the quality of the molded part. This trend of process development of injection molding gave rise to a broad scope of applications with brighter future potentials for the next decades, particularly for medical and electronics applications.
