The aim of this paper is to present the design and application of an electrooculogram (EOG) based on an efficient human-computer interface (HCI). Establishing an alternative channel without speaking and hand movements is important in increasing the quality of life for the handicapped. EOG-based systems are more efficient than electroencephalogram (EEG)-based systems in some cases. By using a realized virtual keyboard, it is possible to notify in writing the needs of the patient in a relatively short time. Considering the biopotential measurement pitfalls, the novel EOG-based HCI system allows people to successfully communicate with their environment by using only eye movements. Classifying horizontal and vertical EOG channel signals in an efficient interface is realized in this study. The new system is microcontroller based, with a common-mode rejection ratio of 88 dB, an electronic noise of 0.6 μV (p-p), and a sampling rate of 176 Hz. The nearest neighborhood algorithm is used to classify the signals, and the classification performance is 95%. The novel EOG-based HCI system allows people to successfully and economically communicate with their environment by using only eye movements.

The aim of this study is to present electrooculogram signals that can be used for human computer interface efficiently. Establishing an efficient alternative channel for communication without overt speech and hand movements is important to increase the quality of life for patients suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or other illnesses that prevent correct limb and facial muscular responses. We have made several experiments to compare the P300-based BCI speller and EOG-based new system. A five-letter word can be written on average in 25 seconds and in 105 seconds with the EEG-based device. Giving message such as “clean-up” could be performed in 3 seconds with the new system. The new system is more efficient than P300-based BCI system in terms of accuracy, speed, applicability, and cost efficiency. Using EOG signals, it is possible to improve the communication abilities of those patients who can move their eyes.

Effectively engaging learners in an online learning environment is a crucial component of instructional design that contributes to improving performance. Gamification, a contemporary instructional strategy, seeks to integrate game elements such as leaderboards into non-game contexts with the aim of increasing learner engagement and performance. This quasi-experimental study explores the impact of integrating leaderboards as a gamification element into formative assessment on learner achievement and engagement in an engineering course. Conducted over eight weeks in the Mechatronics Technology Department of a public university in Türkiye, the study involved 159 s-year engineering students. Using a pretest-posttest control group design, the intervention included a pre-test in the first week, six weeks of instruction and formative online assessment, and a post-test in the final week. Analyzing the data using descriptive and inferential statistics, the results of the study show a positive correlation between the incorporation of a leaderboard as a gamification element into formative assessment procedures within an online platform and improved learner achievement and engagement. However, it is noted that gamification may not sustain learners’ long-term attention. Therefore, instructors are advised to carefully consider time and retention concerns when designing or adopting gamified learning opportunities.

An efficient alternative channel for communication without overt speech and hand movements is important to increase the quality of life for patients suffering from Amiotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or other illnesses that prevent correct limb and facial muscular responses. Often, such diseases leave the ocular movements preserved for a relatively long time. The aim of this study is to present a new approach for the hybrid system which is based on the recognition of electrooculogram (EOG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements for efficient communication and control. As a first step we show that the EOG-based side of the system for communication and controls is useful for patients. The EOG side of the system has been equipped with an interface including a speller to notify of messages. A comparison of the performance of the EOG-based system has been made with a BCI system that uses P300 waveforms. As a next step, we plan to integrate EOG and EEG sides. The final goal of the project is to realize a unique noninvasive device able to offer the patient the partial restoration of communication and control abilities with EOG and EEG signals.

Active and passive techniques are two different techniques with which to detect buried explosives. In practice, the most preferred active method works by broadcasting a signal underground. This signal may stimulate the buried explosive and cause it to explode. It is important to eliminate or minimize this drawback to ensure the safety of the detector operator. In this respect, it is important to increase the studies on the passive detection technique which is not currently used in practice. The aim of this study was to passively detect improvised explosive devices without stimulating them, and to classify underground objects as explosive or non-explosive. A fluxgate sensor array having 33 components was used for passive magnetic field measurements, and the nearest neighborhood algorithm was preferred for classifying the resulting data. In experimental studies, 33 different samples having different amounts of ferromagnetic properties were used. Successful imaging and classification were achieved for the measurements up to 20 cm below the surface of soil. Data were recorded as 32 × 25 matrices, and then they were reduced to 32 × 2 matrices having the same features. Samples having explosive properties were distinguished from other underground objects with success rates of 86% and 95% for 32 × 25 and 32 × 2 data matrices, respectively. Classification times for 32 × 25 and 32 × 2 data matrices were 42 ms and 3.62 ms, respectively. For data groups where the best results were obtained for the data matrices, frame numbers classified in one second were calculated as 23.80 and 276.2, respectively. False alarm rate achieved was 5.31%. The experimental results proved the successes of the matrices reduction and classification approach. One of the most common problems encountered in passive detecting techniques is that the sensor position affects the measurements negatively. In this paper, a solution has been proposed for this important problem.
