With the rapid development of flexible vision sensors and visual sensor networks, computer vision tasks, such as object detection and tracking, are entering a new phase. Accordingly, the more challenging comprehensive task, including instance segmentation, can develop rapidly. Most state-of-the-art network frameworks, for instance, segmentation, are based on Mask R-CNN (mask region-convolutional neural network). However, the experimental results confirm that Mask R-CNN does not always successfully predict instance details. The scale-invariant fully convolutional network structure of Mask R-CNN ignores the difference in spatial information between receptive fields of different sizes. A large-scale receptive field focuses more on detailed information, whereas a small-scale receptive field focuses more on semantic information. So the network cannot consider the relationship between the pixels at the object edge, and these pixels will be misclassified. To overcome this problem, Mask-Refined R-CNN (MR R-CNN) is proposed, in which the stride of ROIAlign (region of interest align) is adjusted. In addition, the original fully convolutional layer is replaced with a new semantic segmentation layer that realizes feature fusion by constructing a feature pyramid network and summing the forward and backward transmissions of feature maps of the same resolution. The segmentation accuracy is substantially improved by combining the feature layers that focus on the global and detailed information. The experimental results on the COCO (Common Objects in Context) and Cityscapes datasets demonstrate that the segmentation accuracy of MR R-CNN is about 2% higher than that of Mask R-CNN using the same backbone. The average precision of large instances reaches 56.6%, which is higher than those of all state-of-the-art methods. In addition, the proposed method requires low time cost and is easily implemented. The experiments on the Cityscapes dataset also prove that the proposed method has great generalization ability.

Object detection is a significant issue in visual surveillance. Faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) is a typical object detection algorithm of deep learning; however, neither its generalization ability nor its detection accuracy of small object is high. In this paper, an effective object detection algorithm is proposed for the small and occluded objects, which is based on multi-layer convolution feature fusion (MCFF) and online hard example mining (OHEM). First, the candidate regions are generated with region proposal network optimized by MCFF. Then, an effective OHEM algorithm is employed to train the region-based ConvNet detector. The hard examples are automatically selected to improve training efficiency. The avoidance of invalid examples accelerates the convergence speed of the model training. The experiments are performed on KITTI data set in intelligent traffic scenario. The proposed method outperforms the popular methods, such as Faster R-CNN, Regionlets, in terms of the overall detection accuracy. Furthermore, our method is good at the detection of small and occluded objects.

Palmprint has gained popularity as a biometric modality and has recently attracted significant research interest. The competition-based method is the prevailing approach for hand-crafted palmprint recognition, thanks to its powerful discriminative ability to identify distinctive features. However, the competition mechanism possesses vast untapped advantages that have yet to be fully explored. In this paper, we reformulate the traditional competition mechanism and propose a C omprehensive C ompetition Net work (CCNet). The traditional competition mechanism focuses solely on selecting the winner of different channels without considering the spatial information of the features. Our approach considers the spatial competition relationships between features while utilizing channel competition features to extract a more comprehensive set of competitive features. Moreover, existing methods for palmprint recognition typically focus on first-order texture features without utilizing the higher-order texture feature information. Our approach integrates the competition process with multi-order texture features to overcome this limitation. CCNet incorporates spatial and channel competition mechanisms into multi-order texture features to enhance recognition accuracy, enabling it to capture and utilize palmprint information in an end-to-end manner efficiently. Extensive experimental results have shown that CCNet can achieve remarkable performance on four public datasets, showing that CCNet is a promising approach for palmprint recognition that can achieve state-of-the-art performance. Related codes will be released at https://github.com/Zi-YuanYang/CCNet.

Palmprint has attracted increasing attention due to its several advantages in the biometrics field. Deep learning has achieved remarkable performance in the computer vision area, so a large number of deep-learning-based methods have been proposed by the research community for palmprint recognition. The outputs of a deep hashing network (DHN) can be represented as a binary bit string, so DHN can reduce the storage and accelerate the matching/retrieval speed. In this paper, DHN is employed to extract the binary template for palmprint and palmvein verification. Spatial transformer network is used to overcome the rotation and dislocation. Palmprint and palmvein can be acquired from visible-light spectrums, including red (R), green (G), blue (B), and near infrared (NIR) spectrum, respectively. Since the features in different spectrums are different, their complementary advantages can be exploited to the full by fusion. Image-level fusion and score-level fusion are developed for palmprint-palmvein fusion recognition. The experiments demonstrate that score-level fusion can improve the accuracy efficiently.
