Blockchain technology can be a useful tool to address issues related to sustainability. From its initial foundation based on cryptocurrency to the development of smart contracts, blockchain technology promises significant business benefits for various industry sectors, including the potential to offer more trustworthy modes of governance, reducing the risks for environmental and economic crises. Notwithstanding its known benefits, and despite having some protective measures and security features, this emerging technology still faces significant security challenges within its different abstract layers. This paper classifies the critical cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities inherent in smart contracts based on an in-depth literature review and analysis. From the perspective of architectural layering, each layer of the blockchain has its own corresponding security issues. In order to have a detailed look at the source of security vulnerabilities within the blockchain, a seven-layer architecture is used, whereby the various components of each layer are set out, highlighting the related security risks and corresponding countermeasures. This is followed by a taxonomy that establishes the inter-relationships between the vulnerabilities and attacks in a smart contract. A specific emphasis is placed on the issues caused by centralisation within smart contracts, whereby a “one-owner” controls access, thus threatening the very decentralised nature that blockchain is based upon. This work offers two main contributions: firstly, a general taxonomy that compiles the different vulnerabilities, types of attacks, and related countermeasures within each of the seven layers of the blockchain; secondly, a specific focus on one layer of the blockchain namely, the contract layer. A model application is developed that depicts, in more detail, the security risks within the contract layer, while enlisting the best practices and tools to use to mitigate against these risks. The findings point to future research on developing countermeasures to alleviate the security risks and vulnerabilities inherent to one-owner control in smart contracts.

Background: This paper examines how logistics mangers increase performance by incorporating VAS in their distribution centres in the context of different natures of customer demand. The study is underpinned by the principles of lean and agile strategies as two key concepts that can be applied to respond to different customer expectations. Methods: Based on the phenomenological interpretivist paradigm, an empirical multiple-case study was conducted in German distribution centres operated by six companies. The empirical data were collected through semi-structured interviews, built on the triangulation of sources. Open, axial, and selective coding were employed to analyse data collected through eighteen in-depth interviews with managers from the distribution centres. Results: The findings indicated that the construct of customer demand forms different benefits that the logistics service providers can achieve through VAS. Simultaneously, various customer demands on VAS requires the distribution centres to focus on developing different operational capabilities to gain superior performance. Conclusions: Based on the research findings, a conceptual model was created. This model can support logistics service providers in improving company performance through effectively managing VAS in their distribution centres. The high dynamic VAS customer demand can bring more financial and non-financial benefits but needs higher flexibility in the warehouse operation system. Stable and predictable VAS, in turn, require a higher degree of standardisation.

The human-side of project management is a topic that has been explored in project management, but not to the extent that it should be. Health and safety is of paramount importance in project management, particularly construction project management. What is often overlooked is the mental health side of health and safety and how anomalistic psychological experiences can have an adverse impact on project success. This paper proposes using ‘k-scores’ to measure psi-hit and psi-miss, or in other words the extent to which a person thinks they have had an anomalistic experience or that they have not. The measure of k-scores are derived from combining the ecological cognition framework with a parametric user model. The benefit of this is that it allows the collection of data online, such as through Microsoft Teams, Skype or Zoom.
