In precipitable water vapor (PWV) retrievals from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data, the two essential parameters, namely, surface pressure () and weighted mean temperature (), are often not available due to the lack of collocated meteorological sensors or improper data retention. Hence, this study presents a comprehensive assessment of the GNSS PWV retrieval using alternative and data from the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ReAnalysis 5, National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final (NCEP FNL) Analysis, and NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS) products. The assessment was based on 691 globally distributed GNSS stations over the entire year of 2019. The zenith hydrostatic delay (ZHD) and integrated from the three types of numerical weather prediction (NWP) atmospheric profiles achieve varying accuracies in ranges of 2.4–3.0 mm and 1.1–1.5 K, respectively. PWVs estimated using ZHD and integrated from the NWP profiles obtain accuracies of about 1.6–2.0 mm. These PWVs are slightly better than those using ZHD and calculated by empirical models with surface pressure and temperature from the NWP datasets. The assessment of PWVs with the global pressure and temperature 2 wet model yields a root mean square (RMS) error of 3.73 mm. The relative RMS decreases from 30%‐40% at high latitudes (70–80°S/N) to ∼5% around the equator. The monthly variations of relative RMS show that (a) low‐latitude regions outperform the high‐latitude regions, and (b) winter months have significantly worse performance than other months in both hemispheres.

GPS has been widely used in the field of geodesy and geodynamics thanks to its technology development and the improvement of positioning accuracy. A time series observed by GPS in vertical direction usually contains tectonic signals, non-tectonic signals, residual atmospheric delay, measurement noise, etc. Analyzing these information is the basis of crustal deformation research. Furthermore, analyzing the GPS time series and extracting the non-tectonic information are helpful to study the effect of various geophysical events. Principal component analysis (PCA) is an effective tool for spatiotemporal filtering and GPS time series analysis. But as it is unable to extract statistically independent components, PCA is unfavorable for achieving the implicit information in time series. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a statistical method of blind source separation (BSS) and can separate original signals from mixed observations. In this paper, ICA is used as a spatiotemporal filtering method to analyze the spatial and temporal features of vertical GPS coordinate time series in the UK and Sichuan-Yunnan region in China. Meanwhile, the contributions from atmospheric and soil moisture mass loading are evaluated. The analysis of the relevance between the independent components and mass loading with their spatial distribution shows that the signals extracted by ICA have a strong correlation with the non-tectonic deformation, indicating that ICA has a better performance in spatiotemporal analysis.

Precipitable water vapor (PWV) products from the second generation of China’s geostationary meteorological satellite Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) have the advantage of high spatiotemporal resolution and can play an increasingly important role in the study of atmosphere and climate. Using the radiosonde, the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ReAnalysis 5 (ERA5) reanalysis data, this study presented a comprehensive evaluation of PWV products from FY-4A for a one-year period from January 2019 to January 2020. Results indicated that FY-4A PWV data have a good agreement with radiosonde and GNSS measured ones with the same correlation coefficient of 0.976, and the root mean square errors (RMSEs) are 3.95 and 3.73 mm, respectively. Compared with the radiosonde and GNSS, the FY-4A Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI) was found to underestimate the water vapor during humid conditions when the PWV is greater than 50 mm. The magnitude of underestimation increases with the growth in water vapor content. In terms of spatial variability, the RMSE of FY-4A PWV decreases with the increase in latitude, while the relative RMSE (R-RMSE) displays an opposite pattern. RMSE from the comparison between FY-4A and ERA5 PWV varies from 0 to 6 mm depending upon the location. Statistics showed that 55.08%, 59.79%, and 83.13% RMSE values are less than 4 mm in the evaluation by radiosonde, GNSS, and ERA5, respectively. The seasonal and diurnal variations of RMSE showed that: 1) summer exhibited larger RMSE than winter and 2) daytime obtained slightly worse performance than nighttime.

The association between earthquakes and ionospheric precursors has been widely reported in previous studies. The Swarm satellite constellation, the China Seismo‐Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES), and the ground‐based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations provide us new opportunities to detect ionospheric precursors to earthquakes for a better understanding of the seismic‐ionospheric coupling. In California, two shallow earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.5 and 7.1, the two higher magnitude events of the Ridgecrest earthquakes sequence, occurred on July 4 and July 6, 2019, respectively. This study adopted total electron content (TEC) data from the GNSS, and electron density (Ne), and electron temperature (Te) data from the CSES and Swarm to study the possible ionospheric perturbations before the Ridgecrest earthquakes. A sliding interquartile range method was used to analyze the TEC data, and a spatial differential method and a revisit trajectory comparison were used to analyze the Ne and Te data. While excluding the influences of various factors including solar and geomagnetic activities, planetary waves, tropospheric convection, and medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances, the cross‐validation of the multi‐source data found that anomalies detected on June 20, June 22, and June 26–29, 2019 could be regarded as precursors of the Ridgecrest earthquakes. A spatial distribution analysis showed that the pre‐earthquake anomalies offset the equatorial direction. TEC anomalies were all positively correlated with the Ne anomalies, with most of them were positive. The Ne and Te anomalies were both positively and negatively correlated with mostly negative, while showing a strong linear negative correlation at nighttime.

Noise filtering, data predicting, and unmonitored data interpolating are important to dam deformation data analysis. However, traditional methods generally process single point monitoring data separately, without considering the spatial correlation between points. In this paper, the Space-Time Kalman Filter (STKF), a dynamic spatio-temporal filtering model, is used as a spatio-temporal data analysis method for dam deformation. There were three main steps in the method applied in this paper. The first step was to determine the Kriging spatial fields based on the characteristics of dam deformation. Next, the observation noise covariance, system noise covariance, the initial mean vector state, and its covariance were estimated using the Expectation Maximization algorithm (EM algorithm) in the second step. In the third step, we filtered the observation noise, interpolated the whole dam unmonitored data in space and time domains, and predicted the deformation for the whole dam using the Kalman filter recursion algorithm. The simulation data and Wuqiangxi dam deformation monitoring data were used to verify the STKF method. The results show that the STKF not only can filter the deformation data noise in both the temporal and spatial domain effectively, but also can interpolate and predict the deformation for the whole dam.
