Brazilian cattle raising needs greater automation as a way to improve productivity and at the same time new ways to meet the growing energy demand. Thus, an alternative is to use renewable sources of electric energy such as biogas. This work proposes a methodology for economic evaluation of the externality denominated emissions, originating from the generation of electric energy through the burning of biogas from residues of Brazilian livestock. Thus, an equation was proposed and applied to obtain the value of this externality as a percentage of the value of electric energy, where greater results indicate greater potential for this externality. The results showed that the emissions, assessed as an externality and quantified on the basis of carbon credits can account for up to 69.4% of the electricity price, but if quantified in relation to the social impact of carbon, the externality in reference exceeds the value of electricity, reaching 408.4%. As a result, it is clear that the use of biogas for power generation in livestock can present other valuable products in addition to electricity and, consequently, can add value to livestock activity.

Air psychrometric properties are important in several areas of agricultural engineering, such as calculation of evaluation of the animal environment and air control in grain storage units. Due to their relevance and the complexity and the uncertainties in the use of psychrometric charts, the objective of this paper was to develop the software, PsyCalculator, which stands out for the automated function that allows presenting the data acquired through sensors and the respective psychrometric properties of the air, either in graph or tables. The automatic data acquisition system consists of a microcontroller that performs readings of sensors that measure the dry bulb temperature and another variable, which may be: wet bulb temperature, relative air humidity or dew point temperature. Then, the values are sent to the PsyCalculator software system. In addition to the values of dry bulb temperature, the software system presents wet bulb temperature and dew point temperature, values of saturation vapor pressure, vapor pressure, mixing ratio, specific volume, enthalpy and degree of saturation. Among the psychometric variables analyzed, the software developed in the study presented a maximum error of 2.14% for the calculation of dew point temperature. The developed software allows the automation of systems that depend on the psychrometric parameters in a friendly and precise fashion.

The detection of possible faults in electrical installation by analyzing the electrical switchboard (ESB) is not currently performed efficiently since the problem is usually detected only when a qualified operator inspects the ESB, either by chance or only on the specified date of maintenance. Considering the frequent and current use of thermographic images for applications in electrical circuits and the need for more efficient and safe systems to detect problems in electrical installations, this work aimed to develop a method for detection and identification of faults in electrical installations through thermographic images of the ESB. This research proposes a method that can be considered as input to a monitoring network of an electrical system and aims at achieving simple computational processing and low cost applications as well as making it unnecessary for the operator to have any knowledge about thermal imaging, programming or thermographic camera use. Ten different scenarios of an ESB containing twenty-six circuit breakers were simulated. Using a supervised classifier, the images were classified according to color, defining the status of operation of each circuit-breaker. It was concluded that the developed classifier was efficient in detecting the status of operation of the ESB components, acting simply and reliably for the ten simulated scenarios.

The anaerobic digesters have been widely used worldwide and followed by the environmental treatment, biogas (energy source) and biofertilizers can be produced at the same process. The plug flow digester is the most common digester system in Brazil, but it still faces great difficulties of implementation because of the low efficiency. In this context, this work proposes ways of improving the energy efficiency of such a digester. To this end, simulations were performed for this type of digester in order to analyze the thermodynamic behavior. It was possible to verify that the velocity gradient was acceptable for the studied reactor characteristics, that is, 0.054, and the average temperature reached with the heating system was 33ºC, which is considered an optimal temperature for biogas production. The simulation proved to be an important tool in scenarios using the digester model and can be of help when designing new units and in different cases of agitation. However the model used here does not evaluate the thermal changes of the digester plastic blanket due to the simplification of the simulation.

Water is a vital element for the survival of humanity. However, due to the unequal distribution and irrational use of water resources, several regions face problems related to water scarcity. Given this scenario, different sources of water reuse have been studied. Condensed water from air conditioning and gray water, although still little explored, have great potential for complementing the water resources used. Thus, this research analyzed the reuse potential of gray water, rainwater reuse and water from air conditioning systems, as well as proposed measures to minimize the consumption of drinking water in the main building of the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the Federal University of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Considering that the estimate of the current monthly water consumption of the building is 172.42 m3, it was estimated that about 68.6 % could be saved by water reuse. By adopting water reuse and the proposed measures, such as tap aerator and coupled discharges, the department will also contribute to the preservation of water resources, which are already scarce in the city of Viçosa and reduce expenses. Furthermore, the building may become a reference in water reuse for other buildings and for proposing water reuse legislation.

The objective of this study was to analyze the feasibility of using agricultural waste from a swine farm to produce biogas, which can be used to generate electricity. For this purpose, the waste production potential was evaluated to determine the biogas production capacity of the farm. This measurement allowed scaling the size of the generator used to the electricity production to meet the needs of the farm as well as surplus electricity. The surplus electricity may be used on the farm when the generator is under maintenance or the electricity consumption is larger than the energy generated. This process is regulated by Normative Resolutions 482 and 687 in Brazil. The results of the analysis of the net present value, internal return rate, payback period and benefit cost ratio indicated that the project was feasible.

The suitability of the motive force contributes to the efficient use of electrical energy. On the other hand, the inadequate size of electric motors is directly connected to increased investment and running costs. This article presents the theory and mainly the application of a methodology for the adequacy of the motive power. The research was conducted at the Federal University of Viçosa dairy factory. This methodology consists in measuring motor rotation, acquiring technical information from the manufacturer's manual, and identifying the type of motor load. In addition, it uses the linearization method to estimate the resistance torque in steady state. This step is achieved without the need for using additional equipment or sending the motor to a laboratory for measuring the torque. In this sense, the studies can be made during the production process. Thus, this relevant methodology has the advantage of allowing the studies to be carried out at the agro-industry facilities. After getting all the information described above, it was possible to determine whether each motor at the factory was oversized. Then, the suitable motor was selected according to the load type. The application of the methodology described herein could provide around 50.6% savings in the monthly electricity costs at the dairy factory, and an attractive internal return rate.

Several countries have reduced their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions levels in buildings by promulgating laws, formulating standards and instituting certification programs. In this context, Brazil launched an energy efficiency certification for buildings in 2009. This study aimed to analyze the economic viability and potential greenhouse gas emissions reductions associated with the use of solar water heaters in a typical Brazilian dwelling. Solar thermal systems were simulated at different energy efficiency levels and shower water flow rates. It was found that the use of solar water heater, as compared with electric heater without a hot water storage, presented internal return rate of approximately 26% per year, simple payback around 4.5 years; net present value about US$ 2,194.00 and cost of conserved energy around US$ 0.12 kWh-1. This study also verified that solar water heater use in a typical Brazilian dwelling reduced emissions compared with electric and gas heating by approximately 95 and 256 kgCO2equivalentyear-1, respectively. The total reduction potential of greenhouse gas emissions by use solar water heaters for the Brazilian residential sector was substantial, around 5.75 million tCO2equivalentyear-1.

Solar energy is among the renewable energy sources that received greater addition in installed capacity. However, it accounts for a small fraction of the energy matrix of most countries. Electric energy generation by solar systems can be improved through tracking. This work aimed to develop and compare a closed and an open loop solar tracking system. The closed loop system was developed using Light Dependent Resistors. An algorithm was developed for the open loop tracker as a function of the geometric relation between the sun and the photovoltaic module. A simulation was run to compare this algorithm with a system using tracking at fixed time intervals, for clear sky conditions, with different tracking parameters and for five different latitudes. No significant difference was observed between the proposed open loop tracking algorithm and the fixed time interval algorithm for the tracking parameters evaluated. The open and closed loop solar tracking systems were compared experimentally in Rio das Ostras, Brazil (22.49 °S 41.92° W). An average gain of 28.5% was observed for the open loop tracking system over a latitude tilted system and 33.0% for the closed loop tracking system.

The main use of electrical energy in the chicken meat processing unit is refrigeration. About 70% of the electricity is consumed in the compressors for the refrigeration system. Through this study, the energetic viability of using biogas from poultry litter in supplying the demand for the refrigeration process was found. The meat processing unit studied has the potential to process about a hundred and sixty thousand chickens a day. The potential biogas production from poultry litter is 60,754,298.91 m3.year-1. There will be a surplus of approximately 8,103MWh per month of electric energy generated from biogas. An economic analysis was performed considering a planning horizon of 20 years and the discount rate of 12% per year. The economic analysis was performed considering scenario 1: sale of all electricity generated by the thermoelectric facility, and scenario 2: sale of the surplus electricity generated after complying with the demands of the refrigeration process and all other electrical energy and thermal energy use. Economic indicators obtained for scenarios 1 and 2 were favorable for the project implementation.

The industrial development of solar photovoltaic technology has attracted investors and influenced governments to establish public policies for the sector. The present research consisted of studying, building and testing low concentration solar radiation systems for photovoltaic energy conversion. The study used optical nonimaging parameters for the V-trough type radiation concentrator constructed of anodized aluminum, to reflect and to cool. Designed to concentrate radiation by about two times and consisting of a set of photovoltaic modules connected in parallel, they were modeled in the Laboratory of Energy Area in the Department of Agricultural Engineering of the Federal University of Vicosa, Brazil, at the coordinates 20°45′14′′ S latitude, 42°52′53′′ W longitude and altitude 648.74 m. They were installed to the geographic North, with the same slope as the local latitude. For comparative analysis, it was determined the electrical characteristics for evaluation of the prototype’s performance with and without radiation concentration, the final productivity for cities in tropical and temperate regions and economic analysis for the system. It was concluded that the prototypes allowed for a gain of energy with concentration, about 31.3% more, and therefore a productivity gain for the analyzed cities in, kWh·kWp−1.

This paper presents studies and the implementation of a novel grid-connected PV system with storage. The goal of this project is to validate the operation and to determine the benefits and limitations of integrating storage with grid-connected PV systems. The objective is to evaluate the viability of using complementary electricity storage for meeting the local evening peak demands - “night-time peak shaving” in a typical load curve of CEMIG's feeder. A novel and versatile control unit-the Bidirectional Intelligent Conversion and Connection Unit (BICC)-has been developed to control the flow of energy from the electricity sources (i.e., PV generator, battery bank, and electric-power grid). In designing this electronic system, we adopted a topology in which the inverter and the maximum power tracking (MPPT) optimize the available power by incorporating two separate and independent converters. In the first phase of the project, a prototype of the system that includes PV with storage and the BICC unit has been installed at GREEN Solar-IPUC in PUC Minas and been under test to evaluate its performance. These trials have been used to optimize system parameters in order to improve the BICC and its interfacing parameters and ensure safe operation of PV-storage system with the grid. This paper reports on the design and advantages of the BICC, the procedures used in the parameter optimization of the prototype, the effectiveness of the BICC in improving the control and connection, conformity to standards, and the viability of scale up for the second phase testing connected to the electric grid (for the utility CEMIG) with storage at the football stadium, Arena do Jacare, located in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais.

Elevated prices and lack of proper legislation and government incentives have been the main barriers in the development of the photovoltaic market in Brazil. In an attempt to overcome those barriers, a microgrid model was proposed and simulated. In the proposed microgrids, residential consumers are connected to each other to maximize the investment return by trading the surplus of generated energy among them. Different topologies and scenarios were studied from electrical energy and economic standpoints. Stochastic data of solar radiation were simulated for the city of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, for the period of one year, considering the statistical behavior of a series over 20 years. The system output power and energy balance were calculated considering a model for photovoltaic generators and the radiation simulated data. By determining the generated energy and electrical needs of the microgrid members, the cash flow and economic feasibility were calculated. Sensitivity analyses were performed by varying economic parameters to determine situations where investment becomes feasible. This paper shows that microgrid contributes to improve the economics and the initial investments. The number of participants in a microgrid, the electricity and the equipment costs are important parameters to speed up the economic and technical feasibility process.
