This paper introduces a novel converter topology based on an independent controlled double-boost configuration. The structure was achieved by combining two independent classic boost converters connected in parallel at the input and in series at the output. Through proper control of the two boost converters, an interleaved topology was obtained, which presents a low ripple for the input current. Being connected in series at the output, a three-level structure was attained with twice the voltage gain of classic boost and interleaved topologies. A significant feature of the proposed converter is the possibility of independent operation of the two integrated boost converters, in both symmetrical and asymmetrical modes. This feature may be particularly useful in voltage balancing or interconnection with bipolar DC grids/applications. The operation principle, simulations, mathematical analysis, and laboratory prototype experimental results are presented.

This paper presents two electromechanical systems used for the overspeed protection of small wind turbines. The actuators have the purpose of rotating the back rudder (tail vane) of the wind turbine when the blades are overspeeding. The rudder rotation angle is 90 degrees in order to completely turn the wind turbine blades away from the wind flow direction. The first device is a new limited-angle torque electromechanical actuator consisting of a device with a simplified structure composed of four permanent magnets (two on each side) glued on a rotor mounted between two stator poles built from ordinary rectangular construction pipes and an electronic control unit. The second device is based on a regular stepper motor actuator with a reduction gear and an appropriate control scheme to maximize the energy harvested at high, over-nominal wind speeds. A generic comparison is provided for the proposed solutions.

The study analyses the performance of different LED circuit configurations feed from a low power resonant driver under pulse quasi‐triangular currents. The considered LED driver topology is based on a bridgeless single‐stage AC‐AC converter with bidirectional switches and a parallel LC resonant tank. The converter performances are simultaneously analyzed in correlation with the most important features, such as the electric efficiency, luminous efficacy, power factor correction capabilities, and flickering implications.

This paper approaches the electromagnetic design and finite-element analysis of a radial flux NdFeB permanent magnet synchronous machine for use as direct-driven generator with low speed micro-wind turbines. The design evaluation of the radial-flux spoke-type permanent magnet (RFPM) generator, based on 2-D and 3-D finite element field analysis, proves that this topology represents a good-performance and cost-effective and could be the machine of choice in grid-connected or stand-alone small-scale wind energy conversion systems.

The aim of the paper is to present an option of using regular half-bridges topology converters for independent driving of multi-phases switched reluctance motors (SRMs). The possibility of using a well-known and accepted topology could represent a cost-related, self-assured and more-efficient way of addressing at least some of the issues regarding the SRM acceptance in practical implementations. In this paper, the general approach, working principles, the first developments and analyses are introduced. Numerical simulations have been done considering the whole drive and the differences between the conventional and the studied converters are highlighted, when applying the converters output voltages to a three-phase 6/4 SRM.

Direct Thrust Control (DTC) methodology for linear motors has already reached the popularity of the classical Direct Torque Control for rotating machines, both, with good application in permanent-magnet synchronous configurations, and pointing to the improvement of the dynamic performances. This research paper presents a comprehensive theoretical and practical analysis of the implementation of a DTC scheme for a two-phase permanent-magnet tubular actuator (PMTSA) in addition with a Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique suited for H-bridge inverter topology. The aim is to uphold the advantages of the classical control methodology, i.e. the dynamic behaviour and implementation simplicity, and to overcome the limitation regarding the disturbances of the responses; the simulation results of the implemented scheme validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme for two-phase topologies of PMTAs.

The paper analyzes the positive effects on a small local grid, obtained by the use of an electronic lighting device with high power factor. Although having a high power factor, the input current of the device is not a perfect sinusoidal waveform, which will not represent a negative aspect, but will have a positive effect on the local grid by obtaining, at a point of common coupling, a higher overall power factor and lower harmonic distortions. The results are compared with those of a perfect sinusoidal input current device, at the same rated power, obtained with an incandescent lamp.

A drive converter for light emitting diodes is presented, which is able to add the constant current operation mode and power factor correction without any control feedback or special control algorithm while obtaining very good performances regarding high efficiency, good reliability and most importantly, low cost. The converter is based on a half bridge resonant topology, controlled with a discrete self-oscillating drive circuit, with an output parallel resonant tank. The working principle is based on the inherent current source behaviour of these kinds of converters, allowing a high power factor and low harmonic distortions. One topology uses no electrolytic high or low voltage filtering capacitors, thus obtaining a longer working lifetime for the driver. In addition, a second topology with output non-electrolytic condenser filtering for higher performances in dimming applications is proposed.

In this paper power factor correction methods are being analyzed in view of their inclusion in lighting systems with compact fluorescent lamps. By means of computer simulation and practical measurements, passive solutions and classical dc-dc converters, in boost and buck-boost configuration with an electronic secondary function of power factor correction, are being explored. Their behavior under the special conditions when the load is represented by an inverter-tube unit is investigated and the advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. The obtained results help in an appropriate selection of a suitable technical, technological and economical solution.

This research paper presents a method to improve the power factor of a compact fluorescent lamp through the deployment of a buck-boost pre-converter which operates at a fixed frequency and duty cycle. The used buck-boost pre-converter is a classic one switch topology characterized by reverse output voltage. This type of active power factor correction seems to have many advantages upon the classic boost PFC. The possibility to have a smaller or a greater voltage level than the input value, makes this type of topology a good option for a common half-bridge self oscillating CFL ballast. The results obtained following the use of the above-mentioned pre-converter are being analyzed through computer simulation as well as practical measurements.
