The study investigated resveratrol’s effect on growth performance, intestinal development, and antioxidant capacity of broilers subjected to heat stress (HS). A total of 162 21-day-old male AA broilers were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups with 6 replicates of 9 birds each. The 3 treatment groups were as follows: the control (CON), in which broilers were housed at 22 ± 1 °C for 24 h day−1, and the HS and HS + resveratrol (400 mg/kg) groups, in which broilers were housed at 33 ± 1 °C for 10 h a day from 8:00 to 18:00 and 22 ± 1 °C for rest of the time. Results indicated that birds in the HS group exhibited lower (p < 0.05) final body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) compared with birds in the CON group. HS birds also had lower (p < 0.05) relative jejunum weight, relative ileum and jejunum length, jejunal villus height, and villus height to crypt depth ratios than the CON group. The activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the mRNA levels of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), SOD1, and GPX were also lower (p < 0.05) in the HS than CON group. The HS group had higher (p < 0.05) protein carbonyl (PC) contents and Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) mRNA levels. Compared with HS group, the HS + resveratrol group exhibited higher (p < 0.05) BW and ADG, relative jejunum weight, relative length of ileum, jejunal villus height, activities of GPX and GST, and mRNA levels of Nrf2 and SOD1, but they had lower (p < 0.05) PC content and Keap1 mRNA levels. In conclusion, resveratrol can improve the intestinal development and antioxidant function of broilers under HS, and therefore improve growth performance. The mechanism by which resveratrol enhances the intestinal antioxidant capacity is mediated by Nrf2 signaling pathway.

The effects of decreasing dietary crude protein (CP) level on growth performance, nutrient digestion, serum metabolites, and nitrogen utilization in growing goat kids were investigated in the current study. Thirty-six male Anhui white goat kids were randomly assigned to one of three CP content diets: 14.8% (control), 13.4%, and 12.0% of dry matter, respectively. Diets were isoenergetic. The experiment lasted for 14 weeks, with the first two weeks being for adaptation. Results showed that the low-CP diet decreased average daily gain, feed efficiency, digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and fiber. No significant changes were observed in dry-matter intake. With a decrease in dietary CP level, fecal nitrogen excretion (% of nitrogen intake) increased linearly, whereas CP intake, blood urea nitrogen, urinary nitrogen excretion (% of nitrogen intake), and total nitrogen excretion (% of nitrogen intake) decreased. Serum glucose concentration decreased, while concentrations of low-density lipoproteins and non-esterified fatty acids increased with the low-CP diet. In conclusion, decreasing the dietary CP level decreased goats’ nitrogen excretion, but with restrictive effects on growth performance. A diet containing 13.4% CP is optimal for reducing nitrogen excretion without any adverse effect on growth performance of Anhui white goat kids. This concentration is 1.4% points lower than the NRC recommendations and thus is also environmentally beneficial on the input side because it decreases the use of feed (soy) protein.

Studies have indicated that dietary resveratrol (RES) improves the meat quality of broilers subjected to heat stress (HS), but the mechanism of action remains unclear. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of RES on meat quality, muscle antioxidant status, and its mechanism of action in broilers under HS. A total of 162 male AA broilers at 21 days old with similar weight were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups with 6 replicates each. The control group (ambient temperature: 22 ± 1 °C) and HS group (ambient temperature: 33 ± 1 °C for 10 h a day from 8:00 to 18:00 and 22 ± 1 °C for the remaining time) were fed a basal diet and the HS + RES group was fed a basal diet with 400 mg/kg RES. The feeding was conducted for 21 continuous days. The results indicated that HS decreased final body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), breast and leg muscle yield, a*24h, pH24h, the activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and mRNA levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), NADPH quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), and GSH-Px (p < 0.05). HS also increased b*45min, L*24h, drip loss, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and kelch-like epichlorohydrin-associated protein 1 (Keap1) mRNA level (p < 0.05). Compared with the HS group, the HS + RES group exhibited a higher ADG, breast and leg muscle yield, a*24h, pH24h, activities of GST and GSH-Px, and mRNA levels of Nrf2, HO-1, and NQO1 but had lower drip loss and Keap1 mRNA level (p < 0.05). RES can improve meat quality and the muscle antioxidant ability of heat-stressed broilers by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Egg yolk is an important source of nutrients for embryo development. In this study, the egg yolk protein composition at 0, 10, and 18 D of incubation was analyzed by 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry. A significant difference in the abundance of 42 protein spots representing 12 proteins were identified (P < 0.05). The 2-DE gel image analysis exhibited that the molecular weight (MW) of 29 protein spots was lower than their theoretical value, in which 14 vitellogenin (VTG) fragments were lower than the theoretical value. There were 13 protein spots showed a higher MW including 5 ovotransferrins with MW of 87.2 kDa. The gene ontology enrichment analysis suggested that biological process of the differentially expressed proteins were mainly involved in lipid transport and lipid localization at 10 and 18 D of incubation. The molecular function of the differentially expressed proteins was involved in nutrient reservoir activity, lipid transporter activity, and antigen binding at 10 D of incubation. At 18 D of incubation, the differentially expressed proteins mainly participated in nutrient reservoir activity and substrate-specific transporter activity. The high abundance of VTGs at 10 D of incubation might participate in lipid localization and lipid transportation to facilitate the yolk nutrient transport to embryo. The low expression of ovotransferrins at 10 D of incubation indicated the chondrogenesis of embryo.

Background: Geese exhibit relatively low reproductive performance, and follicular atresia is an important factor that restricts the egg production of geese. Systematic analysis of the regulation of follicle atresia in geese through transcriptome and proteome levels could provide meaningful information on clarifying the mechanism of follicle atresia in poultry. Result: The granulosa cell layer was loose, disintegrated and showed apoptosis in atretic follicles and remained intact in normal follicles. The hormone levels of FSH and LH were significantly decreased in the atresia follicles compared to the normal follicles (P < 0.05). A total of 954 differentially expressed genes (DEGs, 315 increased and 639 decreased) and 161 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs, 61 increased and 100 decreased) were obtained in atresia follicles compared to normal follicles, of which, 15 genes were differentially expressed in both transcriptome and proteome. The DEGs were mainly enriched in sodium transmembrane transport, plasma membrane, and transmembrane transporter activity based on the GO enrichment analysis and in the cell cycle pathway based on the KEGG enrichment analysis. The DEPs were mainly enriched in localization, lysosome, and phospholipid-binding based on the GO enrichment analysis. Candidate genes Smad2/3, Smad4, Annexin A1 (ANXA1), Stromelysin-1 (MMP3), Serine/threonine-protein kinase (CHK1), DNA replication licensing factor (MCM3), Cyclin-A2 (CCNA2), mitotic spindle assembly checkpoint protein (MAD2), Cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), fibroblast growth factor 12 (FGF12), and G1/S-specific cyclin-D1 (CCND1) were possibly responsible for the regulation of atresia. Conclusion: The cell cycle is an important pathway for the regulation of follicular atresia. Sodium outflow and high expression of MMP3 and MMP9 could be responsible for structural destruction and apoptosis of follicular cells.
