This paper describes the density correction of the NRLMSISE-00 using more than 15 years (2002–2016) of TIMED/SABER satellite atmospheric density data from the middle atmosphere (20–100 km). A bias correction factor dataset is established based on the density differences between the TIMED/SABER data and NRLMSISE-00. Seven height nodes are set in the range between 20 and 100 km. The different scale oscillations of the correction factor are separated at each height node, and the spherical harmonic function is used to fit the coefficients of the different timescale oscillations to obtain a spatiotemporal function at each height node. Cubic spline interpolation is used to obtain the correction factor at other non-node heights. The spatiotemporal correction function depends on six key parameters, including height, latitude, longitude, local time, day, and year. The evaluation results show that the spatiotemporal correction function proposed in this paper achieves a good correction effect on the atmospheric density of NRLMSISE-00. The correction effect becomes more pronounced as the height increases. After correction, the relative error of the model decreased by 40%–50% in July, especially at ±40° N in the 80–100 km region. The correction effect of the spatiotemporal correction function under different geomagnetic activity may have some potential relationships with geomagnetic activities. During geomagnetic storms, the relative errors in atmospheric density at 100, 70, and 32 km decrease from 41.21%, 22.09%, and 3.03% to −9.65%, 2.60%, and 1.44%, respectively, after correction. The relative errors in atmospheric density at 100, 70, and 32 km decrease from 68.95%, 21.02%, and 3.56% to 3.49%, 2.20%, and 1.77%, respectively, during the geomagnetic quiet period. The correction effect during the geomagnetic quiet period is better than that during geomagnetic storms at a height of 100 km. The subsequent effects of geomagnetic activity will be considered, and the atmospheric density during magnetic storms and quiet periods will be corrected separately near 100 km. The ability of the model to characterize the mid-atmosphere (20–100 km) is significantly improved compared with the pre-correction performance. As a result, the corrected NRLMSISE-00 can provide more reliable atmospheric density data for scientific researches and engineering fields, such as data analysis, instrument design, and aerospace vehicles.

The detection of the 11.3$\, {\rm \mu m}$ emission feature characteristic of the Si–C stretch in carbon-rich evolved stars reveals that silicon carbide (SiC) dust grains are condensed in the outflows of carbon stars. SiC dust could be a significant constituent of interstellar dust since it is generally believed that carbon stars inject a considerable amount of dust into the interstellar medium (ISM). The presence of SiC dust in the ISM is also supported by the identification of pre-solar SiC grains of stellar origin in primitive meteorites. However, the 11.3$\,\mu {\rm m}$ absorption feature of SiC has never been seen in the ISM, and oxidative destruction of SiC is often invoked. In this work, we quantitatively explore the destruction of interstellar SiC dust through oxidation based on molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. We find that the reaction of an oxygen atom with SiC molecules and clusters is exothermic and could cause CO-loss. Nevertheless, even if this is extrapolable to bulk SiC dust, the destruction rate of SiC dust through oxidation could still be considerably smaller than the (currently believed) injection rate from carbon stars. Therefore, the lack of the 11.3$\,\mu{\rm m}$ absorption feature of SiC dust in the ISM remains a mystery. A possible solution may lie in the currently believed stellar injection rate of SiC (which may have been overestimated) and/or the size of SiC dust (which may actually be considerably smaller than submicron in size).

Seeing is an important index to evaluate the quality of an astronomical site. To estimate seeing at the Muztagh-Ata site with height and time quantitatively, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis database (ERA5) is used. Seeing calculated from ERA5 is compared consistently with the Differential Image Motion Monitor seeing at the height of 12 m. Results show that seeing decays exponentially with height at the Muztagh-Ata site. Seeing decays the fastest in fall in 2021 and most slowly with height in summer. The seeing condition is better in fall than in summer. The median value of seeing at 12 m is 0.89 arcsec, the maximum value is 1.21 arcsec in August and the minimum is 0.66 arcsec in October. The median value of seeing at 12 m is 0.72 arcsec in the nighttime and 1.08 arcsec in the daytime. Seeing is a combination of annual and about biannual variations with the same phase as temperature and wind speed indicating that seeing variation with time is influenced by temperature and wind speed. The Richardson number Ri is used to analyze the atmospheric stability and the variations of seeing are consistent with Ri between layers. These quantitative results can provide an important reference for a telescopic observation strategy.

The radio-occultation technique can provide vertical profiles of planetary ionospheric and atmospheric parameters, which merit the planetary-climate and space-weather scientific research so far. The Tianwen-1 one-way single-frequency radio-occultation technique was developed to retrieve Mars ionospheric and atmospheric parameters. The first radio-occultation event observation experiment was conducted on 5 August 2021. The retrieved excess Doppler frequency, bending angle, refractivity, electron density, neutral mass density, pressure and temperature profiles are presented. The Mars ionosphere M1 (M2) layer peak height is at 140 km (105 km) with a peak density of about 3.7 × 1010 el/m3 (5.3 × 1010 el/m3) in the retrieved electron-density profile. A planetary boundary layer (−2.35 km~5 km), a troposphere (temperature decreases with height) and a stratosphere (24 km–40 km) clearly appear in the retrieved temperature profile below 50 km. Results show that Tianwen-1 radio occultation data are scientifically reliable and useful for further Mars climate and space-weather studies.

The vigorous development of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation programs imposes higher requirements for the accuracy of satellite orbit determination. Significant variations in atmospheric density within the operational region of LEO satellites are primary factors influencing their orbital decay and operational lifespan. This article first summarizes the research advancements in atmospheric density inversion utilizing LEO satellites, comparing and analyzing the principles of various algorithms, factors affecting accuracy, as well as the advantages and disadvantages associated with different acquisition methods. Subsequently, we introduce recent progress in enhancing atmospheric density inversion algorithms and data analysis applications based on LEO satellites. The SWARM-A satellite, equipped with a high-precision GPS receiver and accelerometer, was employed to invert atmospheric density using both semi-long axis attenuation and accelerometer methodologies. The inversion results were compared against empirical models to validate their reliability; specifically, the correlation coefficient between the semi-long axis attenuation method and nrlmsise00 reached 0.9158, while that between the accelerometer method and nrlmsise00 attained 0.9204. Notably, the inversion accuracy achieved by the accelerometer slightly surpasses that of the semi-long axis attenuation method. These findings provide valuable support for predicting large air tightness based on LEO satellite orbit data inversions and for adjusting operational orbits to ensure successful execution of satellite missions.

Needle-like metallic particles have been suggested to explain a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena, ranging from the mid-infrared interstellar extinction to the thermalization of starlight to generate the cosmic microwave background. These suggestions rely on the amplitude and the wavelength dependence of the absorption cross-sections of metallic needles. On the absence of an exact solution to the absorption properties of metallic needles, their absorption cross-sections are often derived from the antenna approximation. However, it is shown here that the antenna approximation is not an appropriate representation, since it violates the Kramers–Kronig relation. Stimulated by the recent discovery of iron whiskers in asteroid Itokawa and graphite whiskers in carbonaceous chondrites, we call for rigorous calculations of the absorption cross-sections of metallic needle-like particles, presumably with the discrete dipole approximation. We also call for experimental studies of the formation and growth mechanisms of metallic needle-like particles as well as experimental measurements of the absorption cross-sections of metallic needles of various aspect ratios over a wide wavelength range to bound theoretical calculations.
