In this paper, the effect of two hollow droplets’ impact on a solid substrate is numerically studied. A coupled level set and volume of fraction method is used to investigate the fluid dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of two hollow cylindrical droplets vertically impacting on a dry flat surface simultaneously. Numerical results show that, different from two continuous dense droplets, counter-jet at impact point (CJIP) is observed as a distinguished feature during the two hollow droplets’ impact process. However, counter-jet at symmetric point (CJSP) is formed in the vicinity of the symmetric point for both two hollow and dense cylindrical droplets. The analysis of pressure and velocity distribution is performed. It is shown that the formation of CJSP and CJIP is mainly caused by the pressure gradient. Upon further analysis of average heat flux, the formation of CJIP and the liquid shell rupture are the two main factors determining that the hollow droplet has a lower heat transfer capacity with the flat solid wall than that of the dense droplet. Through the investigation about the effect of impact velocity on fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics, the spread factor, the height of CJSP and CJIP, and the average heat flux will all increase with higher impact velocity. These results will provide a better understanding of hollow droplet impingement and heat transfer on flat surfaces.

Compressor design is always a prevalent research issue as nowadays the compressor demands higher performance. Designing afresh a new compressor of higher aerodynamic performance will cost a tremendous amount of time and expense. Consequently, the wiser method of acquiring a higher performance compressor is to optimize a current compressor, discussed in this paper. First, a detailed numerical simulation of al compressor is done. A parametric rotor model is created and the variations of lean and swept parameters are limited. Then, an optimization calculation is carried out based on the combination of an artificial neural network and a genetic algorithm. The optimization iteration is started at three specified working points – a choke point, a design point and a near stall point – to acquire a comprehensive improved solution. A novel penalty function considering both pressure ratio and efficiency is constructed to find the optimal model. Finally, a detailed review is made of the original and the optimized compressor. The computational results show that the isentropic efficiency is successfully increased and the stall margin is remarkably improved. Ultimately, a detailed vortex structure analysis with increasing outlet pressure is discussed. This helps the performance increment mechanism to be understood further.
Micro-channel heat sink (MCHS) has been extensively used in various electronic cooling fields. Double-layered MCHS, or DL-MCHS, is regarded as one effective technique for high-heat-flux transfer and is expected to meet the ever-increasing heat load requirement of future electronic device generations. In order to improve the cooling capacity, two new types of the MCHS, with a double-layered matrix structure (DL-M) and double-layered interlinked matrix structure (DL-IM) are proposed and investigated numerically. The two designs are compared with the traditional double-layered rectangular structure (DL-R) and the double-layered triangular structure (DL-T). Different properties of the heat sink are investigated to assess the overall heat transfer performance, for which coolant flow and heat transfer are both evaluated. The numerical results reveal that the periodical slot subchannel in the matrix has a significant effect on fluid flow for heat transfer. In comparison to the DL-R and the DL-T, the DL-M and DL-IM realize a much lower pressure drop and temperature rise at the base surface and also have higher Nusselt number and secondary flow intensity, therefore, manifesting better overall thermal performance. In the DL-M and DL-IM, the coolant flows along the periodical subchannel in one layer and is redirected into the second layer with vortices being induced. The vortices promote the coolant mixing and enhance the mass and heat transfer. These geometric design strategies can provide references for wide heat sink applications.
The impingement behaviors of two hollow drops or two continuous dense drops simultaneously impacting a thin liquid film were analyzed numerically using a three-dimensional coupled level-set and volume-of-fraction method. The findings indicate the formation of a counter-jet during the simultaneous impact of two hollow drops, whereas a relatively stable residual film is formed during the impingement of two continuous dense drops. This counter-jet generates heat-transfer blind spots in the case of simultaneous impact by hollow drops, leading to the easy splitting of the residual liquid film. The heat around the blind spot region is difficult to release due to flow stagnation and the squeezing of the initial cold liquid film to the symmetric point. These findings indicate that more focus should be placed on the uniformity of heat transfer in realistic applications involving drop impingement. Finally, analyses of pressure gradient and flow separation revealed the formation process of the counter-jet and central liquid sheet. The findings are valuable for guiding industrial technical practice.
Based on the mesoscopic scale, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) with an enthalpy-based model represented in the form of distribution functions is widely used in the liquid-solid phase transition process of energy storage materials due to its direct and relatively accurate characterization of the presence of latent heat of solidification. However, since the enthalpy distribution function itself contains the physical properties of the material, these properties are transferred along with the enthalpy distribution function during the streaming process. This leads to deviations between the enthalpy-based model when simulating the phase transition process of different materials mixed and the actual process. To address this issue, in this paper, we construct an enthalpy-based model for different types of materials. For multiple materials, various forms of enthalpy distribution functions are employed. This method still uses the form of enthalpy distribution functions for collisions and streaming processes among the same type of substance, while for heat transfer between different materials, it avoids the direct transfer of enthalpy distribution functions and instead applies a source term to the enthalpy distribution functions, characterizing the heat transfer between different materials through the energy change before and after mixing based on the temperature. To verify the accuracy of the method proposed in this paper, a detailed solidification model for two different materials is constructed using the example of water droplets solidifying in air, and the results are compared with experimental outcomes. The results of the simulation show that the model constructed in this paper is largely in line with the actual process.
The problem of flow in curved duct is common in engineering applications. By using CFD method, the numerical simulation to the flow in 90° curved duct is done. Three-dimensional models of curved duct without guide plate and curved duct with different guide plates have been established. And the characteristic of the flow field is studied too. By analyzed total pressure loss, the best conditions for guide plates installed in curved duct are achieved
