The17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations Agenda 2030 constitute a global blueprint agenda and instrument for peace and prosperity worldwide. Artificial intelligence and other digital technologies that have emerged in the last years, are being currently applied in virtually every area of society, economy and the environment. Hence, it is unsurprising that their current role in the pursuance or hampering of the SDGs has become critical. This study aims at providing a snapshot and comprehensive view of the progress made and prospects in the relationship between artificial intelligence technologies and the SDGs. A comprehensive review of existing literature has been firstly conducted, after which a series SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analyses have been undertaken to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats inherent to artificial intelligence-driven technologies as facilitators or barriers to each of the SDGs. Based on the results of these analyses, a subsequent broader analysis is provided, from a position vantage, to (i) identify the efforts made in applying AI technologies in SDGs, (ii) pinpoint opportunities for further progress along the current decade, and (iii) distill ongoing challenges and target areas for important advances. The analysis is organized into six categories or perspectives of human needs: life, economic and technological development, social development, equality, resources and natural environment. Finally, a closing discussion is provided about the prospects, key guidelines and lessons learnt that should be adopted for guaranteeing a positive shift of artificial intelligence developments and applications towards fully supporting the SDGs attainment by 2030.

The United Nations Agenda 2030 established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a guideline to guarantee a sustainable worldwide development. Recent advances in artificial intelligence and other digital technologies have already changed several areas of modern society, and they could be very useful to reach these sustainable goals. In this paper we propose a novel decision making model based on surveys that ranks recommendations on the use of different artificial intelligence and related technologies to achieve the SDGs. According to the surveys, our decision making method is able to determine which of these technologies are worth investing in to lead new research to successfully tackle with sustainability challenges.

An important part of art history can be discovered through the visual information in monument facades. However, the analysis of this visual information, i.e, morphology and architectural elements, requires high expert knowledge. An automatic system for identifying the architectural style or detecting the architectural elements of a monument based on one image will certainly help improving our knowledge in art and history. Building such tool is challenging as some styles share architectural elements, the bad conservation state of some monuments and the noise included in the image itself. The aim of this paper is to introduce MonuMAI (Monument with Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence) framework. In particular, (i) we designed MonuMAI dataset rich with expert knowledge considering the proposed architectural styles taxonomy and key elements relationship, which allows addressing several tasks, e.g., monument style classification and architectural elements detection, (ii) we developed MonuMAI deep learning pipeline based on lightweight MonuNet architecture for monument style classification and MonuMAI Key Elements Detection (MonuMAI-KED) model, and (iii) we built citizen science based MonuMAI mobile app that uses the proposed MonuMAI deep learning pipeline trained on MonuMAI dataset for performing in real life conditions. Our experiments show that both MonuNet architecture and the detection model achieve very good results under real life conditions.

El presente artículo aborda la revisión sistemática de literatura sobre la educación virtual para todos. Concretamente con este trabajo se da respuesta a interrogantes como: ¿cuáles son las consideraciones tecnológicas y pedagógicas para implementar propuestas e-learning accesibles en educación superior inclusiva? ¿Qué papel cumple el Diseño Universal de Aprendizaje en el desarrollo de propuestas educativas virtuales para todos en educación superior? Se analizaron producciones científicas en el período de 2009 a 2018. El estudio se apoya en la metodología propuesta por Kitchenham (2004) y Okoli & Schabram (2010). Las producciones revisadas aportan datos empíricos y teóricos en el ámbito de la educación superior virtual inclusiva. Los resultados muestran que la accesibilidad a las plataformas educativas y recursos o contenidos educativos, han sido de gran interés, así como la consideración del Diseño Universal de Aprendizaje y sus tres principios para llegar a la mayor cantidad de aprendices en línea, con propuestas formativas accesibles para todos que buscan una educación virtual inclusiva.

This article presents the design and pilot of an open online course, based on the principle of universal design for learning (Center for Applied Special Technology, 2011), to promote inclusive virtual education as an improvement transferable to other contexts. The course constitutes the first massive open online course (MOOC) training proposal of the University of Atlántico in Colombia. In this case study, we employed the instructional design methodology of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (Branch, 2009) and the universal design for learning guidelines. The design of this online training activity enhances the quality of inclusive virtual education, improves accessibility with no need for platform adjustments, and involves participants in their learning. This educational initiative complements the academic offer for students, graduates, administrators, teachers, and external guests, and contributes to the democratisation of education. The result is the creation of a MOOC, “Inclusive Educational Contexts: Design for all”, which is accessible to a diverse range of learners.

Due to the development of intelligent decision-making, social network group decision-making (SNGDM) has become increasingly valued. Generally, real SNGDM cases involve not only the mathematical formulation of the social network analysis but also the experts’ psychological behaviors. Self-confidence, an expert's psychological implication of self-statement, is a significant topic in SNGDM problems, while it is overlooked in most existing research. To address this issue, this study takes experts’ self-confidence into account in SNGDM. All experts use self-confident fuzzy preference relations (SC-FPRs) to express their opinions. Subsequently, we have developed a novel self-confidence-based consensus approach for SNGDM with SC-FPRs. A dynamic importance degree of experts which combines the external trust and internal self-confidence is proposed to determine their weights. A consensus index considering self-confidence is defined to assess the consensus level among experts. Meanwhile, a trust-based feedback mechanism is presented to improve the consensus efficiency. The rule of the feedback mechanism is that experts dynamically adjust their self-confidence levels while revising the preferences. Using a self-confidence score function, an alternative that has the highest self-confidence score can be selected as the best solution. An illustrative example and some comparisons are given to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

The virtual learning landscapes have created complex environments when evaluating an educational experience. The Fuzzy Delphi method, which incorporates the theory of fuzzy sets, takes the opinions issued by judges, from a linguistic perspective, to validate a questionnaire that will measure the degree of success of an educational experience. The judges have to reach a consensus on the validity and applicability of the instrument. This work contributes to the validation of questionnaires by enabling linguistic assessments and not only binary answers and with a calculus of consistency and consensus degrees for each item, which contributes to consensus reaching. It has been used as a practical experience to define, with the consensus of nine experts, a questionnaire that measures the virtual communication and the satisfaction with in a Blended-Learning pilot experience in the subject of Software Fundamentals, 1st semester of the Degree in Computer Engineering of the University of Granada.

Serious games, especially educational video games, have proliferated in recent years. Despite this, there are very few methodological proposals capable of addressing the design of all the key elements of an educational video game. To deal with this discrepancy, this paper presents a methodology divided into five phases: startup, design, production, test, and post-production; focusing on the design phase of educational games. The design phase structures an educational video game in acts, scenes, scenarios, actions and dialogues; and defines the modeling tasks and generated artifacts which have to be carried out in each step of the process.

The General Accounting subject is on the curricula of five different bachelor’s degrees offered in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Granada (UGR), Spain. In a coordinated way, all the lecturers involved in this subject have generated interactive materials and a methodology that allows students to undertake online self-assessment activities that are very similar to the final exam. Following a blended-learning methodology, General Accounting combines classroom education techniques with the use of information and communication technology (ICT) tools, and the students work to improve their grades. In the 2012/13 academic year, students on two of the degrees were consulted about their overall satisfaction with using this platform. From the results, we can highlight the positive appraisal of the interestingness and usefulness of activities on the platform. We also obtained a positive correlation between the students’ access to the activities and the grades obtained in them, and the final grades obtained in the subject.

It is already known that power in multimarker transmission/disequilibrium tests may improve with the number of markers as some associations may require several markers to be captured. However, a mechanism such as haplotype grouping must be used to avoid incremental complexity with the number of markers. 2G, a state-of-the-art transmission/disequilibrium test, implements this mechanism to its maximum extent by grouping haplotypes into only two groups, high and low-risk haplotypes, so that the test has only one degree of freedom regardless of the number of markers. The test checks whether those haplotypes more often transmitted from parents to offspring are truly high-risk haplotypes. In this paper we use haplotype similarity as prior knowledge to classify haplotypes as high or low risk ones and start with those haplotypes in which the prior will have lower impact i.e. those with the largest differences between transmission and non-transmission counts. If their counts are very different, the prior knowledge has little effect and haplotypes are classified as low or high risk as 2G does. We show a substantial gain in power achieved by this approach, in both simulation and real data sets.

Multimarker Transmission/Disequilibrium Tests (TDTs) are very robust association tests to population admixture and structure which may be used to identify susceptibility loci in genome-wide association studies. Multimarker TDTs using several markers may increase power by capturing high-degree associations. However, there is also a risk of spurious associations and power reduction due to the increase in degrees of freedom. In this study we show that associations found by tests built on simple null hypotheses are highly reproducible in a second independent data set regardless the number of markers. As a test exhibiting this feature to its maximum, we introduce the multimarker -Groups TDT (), a test which under the hypothesis of no linkage, asymptotically follows a distribution with degree of freedom regardless the number of markers. The statistic requires the division of parental haplotypes into two groups: disease susceptibility and disease protective haplotype groups. We assessed the test behavior by performing an extensive simulation study as well as a real-data study using several data sets of two complex diseases. We show that test is highly efficient and it achieves the highest power among all the tests used, even when the null hypothesis is tested in a second independent data set. Therefore, turns out to be a very promising multimarker TDT to perform genome-wide searches for disease susceptibility loci that may be used as a preprocessing step in the construction of more accurate genetic models to predict individual susceptibility to complex diseases.

The exponential increment in the production of biomedical data is forcing a higher level of automatization to analyze it. Therefore, biomedical researchers have to entrust bioinformaticians to develop software able to process a huge amount of data on high performance unix-based servers. However, most of the software is developed with a very basic, text-based, user interface, usually because of a lack of time. In addition the applications are developed as independent tools yielding to a set of specific software tools with very different ways of use. This implies that final users continuously need developer support. Even worse, in many situations only developers themselves are able to run the software every time is required. In this contribution we present a Web-based user interface that homogenizes the way users interact with the applications installed in a server. This way, authorized users can add their applications to the Web site at a very low cost. Therefore, researchers with no special computational skills will perform analysis by themselves, gaining independence to run applications whenever they want at the cost of a very little effort. The application is portable to any unix-like system with a php+mysql server.

Information society brings new forms of communication models where citizens live with multiple digital identities on nomadic online communities. These collectives are capable of interact themselves to create new forms of knowledge sharing experiences and recycling old fashioned model of information management, and thus creating learning communities through informal practices. In this paper we analyze these digital communities representing new forms of learning styles and new approaches for open knowledge as a new trend for the next decade society.

Assessing risk susceptibility of individuals to a complex disease is becoming an interesting prevention tool specially recommended for those with ancestors or other relatives affected by the disease. As genome-wide DNA sequencing is getting more affordable, more dense genotyping is performed and accuracy is increased. Therefore, health public services may consider the results of this approach in their preventing plans and physicians be encouraged to perform these risk tests. A web-based tool has been built for risk assessing of complex diseases and its knowledge base is currently filled with multiple sclerosis risk variants and their effect on the disease. The genetic profiling is calculated by using a Naive Bayes network, which it has been shown to provide highly accurate results as long as dense genotyping, haplotype reconstruction and several markers at a time are considered.

Tree-based transmission-disequilibrium tests are valuable tools to perform fine-mapping in the search of genetic factors for complex diseases, as they use evolutionary information to relate haplotypes affecting the disease. However, the number of different haplotype trees exponentially increases with the number of markers used, leading to spurious associations due to sample overfitting. If the usual Bonferroni correction is applied to avoid those spurious associations, true risk variants may also be missed. In this work we considered a different solution to avoid sample overfitting of haplotype trees. It consists of dividing the data set into at least two parts and using one of them to choose the haplotype tree which models the disease, and the other one to assess the statistical significance. As a practical example to evaluate the performance of our proposal, we modified the TreeDT algorithm and observed a significant improvement in reproducibility while reducing the type I errors.

Multimarker transmission/disequilibrium tests (TDTs) are powerful association and linkage tests used to perform genome-wide filtering in the search for disease susceptibility loci. In contrast to case/control studies, they have a low rate of false positives for population stratification and admixture. However, the length of a region found in association with a disease is usually very large because of linkage disequilibrium (LD). Here, we define a multimarker proportional TDT (mTDT P ) designed to improve locus specificity in complex diseases that has good power compared to the most powerful multimarker TDTs. The test is a simple generalization of a multimarker TDT in which haplotype frequencies are used to weight the effect that each haplotype has on the whole measure. Two concepts underlie the features of the metric: the ‘common disease, common variant’ hypothesis and the decrease in LD with chromosomal distance. Because of this decrease, the frequency of haplotypes in strong LD with common disease variants decreases with increasing distance from the disease susceptibility locus. Thus, our haplotype proportional test has higher locus specificity than common multimarker TDTs that assume a uniform distribution of haplotype probabilities. Because of the common variant hypothesis, risk haplotypes at a given locus are relatively frequent and a metric that weights partial results for each haplotype by its frequency will be as powerful as the most powerful multimarker TDTs. Simulations and real data sets demonstrate that the test has good power compared with the best tests but has remarkably higher locus specificity, so that the association rate decreases at a higher rate with distance from a disease susceptibility or disease protective locus.
