The heating of two-component droplets and the following explosive breakup of those droplets have been extensively studied over the most recent years. These processes are of high interest, since they can significantly improve the performance of many technologies in fuel ignition, thermal and flame liquid treatment, heat carriers based on flue gases, vapors and water droplets, etc. Research throughout the world involves various schemes of droplet heating and supply (or, less frequently, injection) to heating chambers. The most popular scheme features the introduction of a two-component or multi-component droplet onto a holder into the heating chamber. In this research, we study how holder materials affect the conditions and integral characteristics of droplet heating and explosive breakup: heating time until boiling temperature; minimum temperature sufficient for droplet breakup; number and size of fragments in the resulting droplet aerosol, etc. Experiments involve droplets that are produced from flammable (oil) and non-flammable (water) components with significantly different thermophysical and optical properties, as well as boiling temperature and heat of vaporization. The most popular elements with the scientific community, such as ceramic, steel, aluminum, copper, and phosphorus rods, as well as a nichrome wire, serve as holders. We establish the roles of energy inflow from a holder to a droplet, and energy outflow in the opposite direction. We compare the holder results with a supporting thermocouple, recording the drop temperature under a heat transfer provided at 350°C. Finally, we forecast the conditions that are required for a significant improvement in the performance of thermal and flame water treatment through the explosive breakup of two-component droplets.

The article considers the main tendencies of development of alternative liquid fuels used in aviation, land transport, and for the needs of power generation sector. An overview of the main constraints to the development of alternative fuel technologies in these technical areas was carried out. The main groups of the most promising components and fuel compositions capable of effectively replacing conventional liquid fuels have been generalized. The basic criteria for evaluating alternative fuels are formulated. Environmental indicators of fuel combustion are of paramount importance for aviation. Rheological characteristics, calorific value, and environmental friendliness are critical for land transport engines. The effectiveness of alternative fuels for the power generation sector needs to be assessed in terms of such factors as economic, environmental, rheological, and energy to find an optimal balanced formulation. The list of potential components of alternative liquid fuels is extremely large. For a comprehensive analysis of the efficiency and selection of the optimal composition of the fuel that meets specific requirements, it is necessary to use multicriteria evaluation methods.

This paper presents the experimental research into the impingement of single- and multicomponent liquid drops on a solid wall. We focus on studying the conditions and characteristics of two impact scenarios: rebound and breakup. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the effect of a group of factors on the drop transformation and fragmentation characteristics. These factors include the drop velocity and size, Weber number, impinging angle, wall temperature, thermophysical properties of the wall material, surface roughness, hydrophilic and hydrophobic behavior of the surface, homogeneity and inhomogeneity of the drop composition, as well as viscosity and surface tension of the liquid. We compared the outcomes of one, two, and three drops with the same total volume on a wall. Histograms were plotted of the number and size distribution of the emerging secondary droplets. The results include the critical conditions for the intense breakup of drops. Such factors as wall heating, its roughness, impinging angle, drop size and velocity affected the breakup conditions most notably. The variation of a group of these factors could provide a 2–25-fold increase in the liquid surface area as a result of the impact.

Two interconnected mathematical models have been developed to describe slagging of a steam boiler furnace at the macro and micro levels. The macro-level model is implemented in Ansys Fluent. Using the fuel characteristics and temperature in the furnace, this model can predict the characteristics of ash formation on heat exchanger tubes when the melting temperature of the mineral part of solid fossil fuel is exceeded. The obtained values of slagging rates are used as initial data in the software implementation of the original Matlab microlevel model. Under conditions of dynamic change in the thickness of the slag layer, this model can evaluate the heat transfer characteristics in the hot gas/slag layer/tube wall/water coolant system. The results showed that switching a coal-fired boiler from a solid fossil fuel to a fuel slurry will improve stability and uninterrupted boiler operation due to a lower slagging rate. The combustion of coal water slurries with petrochemicals compared with coal–water fuel is characterized by higher maximum temperatures in the furnace (13–38% higher) and a lower average growth rate of slag deposits (5% lower), which reduces losses during heat transfer from flue gases to water coolant by 2%.
