As a PhD-candidate at the Institute for Environmental Science (IVM) and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, my research activities are focused on how insurance strategies can enhance adaptation and societal resilience to increasing risk of riverine flooding due to climate change. More specifically, I am interested in assessing insurance policies in terms of societal impacts, such as unaffordability of premiums and demand for insurance coverage. For this purpose, I use and extend upon a partial equilibrium model that includes a simulation of future flood risk, which uses scenarios of climate- and socio-economic change, insurance sector premium setting rules, and a behavioral module that simulates household decision making concerning insurance uptake and whether to implement adaptation measures. Currently, the focus of my research is on EU-regions, largely because of my involvement in several EU-funded research projects such as COACCH, RECEIPT and DG-CLIMA. However, as increasing resilience and adaptation to natural hazards is a global challenge, I am interested to broaden my scope to this level.
