Dr Martin Munashe Chari is Programme Manager of the Critical Zones Africa (CZA) project at the Environmental Humanities South (EHS) Research Centre, University of Cape Town in South Africa. He holds a PhD in Geography and his current research extends this along three strands: indicator construction under data scarcity, integrating satellite, biophysical, administrative and household-survey data into validated composite indices; machine learning for Earth observation, including random-forest classification of drone and satellite imagery in Google Earth Engine. The methodological thread throughout is making rigorous spatial inference possible where observational data are sparse, historical or non-comparable, which is the standing condition of environmental research across much of Africa. Martin is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR7 WGI Chapter 9 Reviewer and former Topic Coordinator for Frontiers in Environmental Science journal. Recipient of Outstanding Reviewer Award in the 2024 Emerald Literati Awards, postgraduate research supervisor and external examiner. He is a Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders (DEAL) programme alumnus and EGU2026 session co-convener, bringing sustained interdisciplinary research engagement.
