Education: · PhD technical math, 1994, Technische Universitaet Graz, Austria. · PhD computer science, 1992, Univerza v Ljubljani. Academic titles · Full professor for mathematics, University of Ljubljana · Full Professor for discrete and computational mathematics, and full professor for computer science, University of Maribor Prof. ddr. Janez Žerovnik is the author or coauthor of more 150 scientific papers and over 100 refereed conference contributions in proceedings of international scientific conferences. Besides his interest in theoretical research he is using his solid background in mathematics and computer science for successful applied research on various fields (for example telecommunications, mathematical chemistry, mechanical engineering). He has, for example, provided a formal proof of asymptotic inferiority of the popular metaheuristics Simulated annealing versus the standard local search, disproved a 15 years open uniform shortest routing path conjecture and provided a complete solution answering the question on the existence of perfect codes in direct product of cycles. His lower bound for the Shannon capacity of the cycle on seven vertices is, after 15 years, still the best known. He is a member of editorial boards at several journals and has organized or has been involved in organization of several scientific conferences.
