Magnetic Heusler alloys which undergo a martensitic transition display interesting functional properties. In the present review, we survey the magnetocaloric effects of Ni-Mn-based Heusler alloys and discuss their relation with the magnetic shape-memory and magnetic superelasticity reported in these materials. We show that all these effects are a consequence of a strong coupling between structure and magnetism which enables a magnetic field to rearrange martensitic variants as well as to provide the possibility to induce the martensitic transition. These two features are respectively controlled by the magnetic anisotropy of the martensitic phase and by the difference in magnetic moments between the structural phases. The relevance of each of these contributions to the magnetocaloric properties is analysed.

Structural and magnetic transformations in the Heusler-based system Ni0.50Mn0.50−xSnx are studied by x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and magnetization. The structural transformations are of austenitic-martensitic character. The austenite state has an L21 structure, whereas the structures of the martensite can be 10M, 14M, or L10 depending on the Sn composition. For samples that undergo martensitic transformations below and around room temperature, it is observed that the magnetic exchange in both parent and product phases is ferromagnetic, but the ferromagnetic exchange, characteristic of each phase, is found to be of different strength. This gives rise to different Curie temperatures for the austenitic and martensitic states.

The magnetic and structural transformations in the Heusler-based system Ni0.50Mn0.50−xInx are studied in the composition range 0.05⩽x⩽0.25. While the cubic phase is preserved in the range 0.165⩽x⩽0.25, we find the presence of martensitic transformations in alloys with x⩽0.16. In a critical composition range 0.15⩽x⩽0.16, the magnetic coupling in both austenitic and martensitic states is ferromagnetic. Magnetic field-induced structural transitions are also found in the x=0.16 alloy, whereby the structural transition temperature shifts by 42K in a field of 50kOe.

The elastocaloric effect in the vicinity of the martensitic transition of a Cu-Zn-Al single crystal has been studied by inducing the transition by strain or stress measurements. While transition trajectories show significant differences, the entropy change associated with the whole transformation (ΔSt) is coincident in both kinds of experiments since entropy production is small compared to ΔSt. The values agree with estimations based on the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The possibility of using these materials for mechanical refrigeration is also discussed.
