The leaf area density (LAD) within a tree canopy is very important for the understanding and modeling of photosynthetic studies of the tree. Terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has been applied to obtain the three-dimensional structural properties of vegetation and estimate the LAD. However, there is concern about the efficiency of available approaches. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop an effective means for the LAD estimation of the canopy of individual magnolia trees using high-resolution terrestrial LiDAR data. The normal difference method based on the differences in the structures of the leaf and non-leaf components of trees was proposed and used to segment leaf point clouds. The vertical LAD profiles were estimated using the voxel-based canopy profiling (VCP) model. The influence of voxel size on the LAD estimation was analyzed. The leaf point cloud’s extraction accuracy for two magnolia trees was 86.53% and 84.63%, respectively. Compared with the ground measured leaf area index (LAI), the retrieved accuracy was 99.9% and 90.7%, respectively. The LAD (as well as LAI) was highly sensitive to the voxel size. The spatial resolution of point clouds should be the appropriate estimator for the voxel size in the VCP model.

Accurate estimation and monitoring of rice phenology is necessary for the management and yield prediction of rice. The radar backscattering coefficient, one of the most direct and accessible parameters has been proved to be capable of retrieving rice growth parameters. This paper aims to investigate the possibility of monitoring the rice phenology (i.e., transplanting, vegetative, reproductive, and maturity) using the backscattering coefficients or their simple combinations of multi-temporal RADARSAT-2 datasets only. Four RADARSAT-2 datasets were analyzed at 30 sample plots in Meishan City, Sichuan Province, China. By exploiting the relationships of the backscattering coefficients and their combinations versus the phenology of rice, HH/VV, VV/VH, and HH/VH ratios were found to have the greatest potential for phenology monitoring. A decision tree classifier was applied to distinguish the four phenological phases, and the classifier was effective. The validation of the classifier indicated an overall accuracy level of 86.2%. Most of the errors occurred in the vegetative and reproductive phases. The corresponding errors were 21.4% and 16.7%, respectively.

Interferometric phase denoising is a vital procedure for interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)-based remote sensing techniques because it can improve the accuracy of the final InSAR product. Here, we propose a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)-based InSAR phase denoising method, abbreviated PDNet. Given an ideal wrapped phase, φ, the PDNet learns the self-similarity function of φ from the input interferogram. After training, the PDNet obtains filtered wrapped phases using the maximum-likelihood approach by exhausting all φs from –π to π. Unlike a boxcar-based filtering method, the PDNet does not consist of an “averaging operation” on the spatial domain, and the resolution loss and interferometric fringe distortion will not directly affect the PDNet result. Thus, the PDNet can be considered a nonlocal phase denoising approach. Analyses and results show that the PDNet is an almost near-real-time denoising algorithm. Its denoising accuracy is higher than that of the available model- and learning-based InSAR phase denoising methods.

Airborne synthetic aperture radar with an imaging resolution of up to 0.03m is developed. The imaging process, however, suffers from motion errors with 2-dimensional spatial-variant characteristics that invalidate approximations suitable for motion compensation (MOCO) in a sub-meter resolution SAR system. To estimate and compensate for 2-dimensional spatial-variant motion errors (2-D SVME), we propose a novel two-stage processing framework for the ultrahigh-resolution microwave photonic (UHR MWP) airborne SAR imaging. In the first stage, the two-step MOCO compensates for the spatial-invariant and range-variant motion errors. Range down-sampling and azimuth windowing are adopted to increase the robustness of the method. Afterward, the coupling of the 2-D SVME is greatly decreased, and a coarse-focused image is obtained. In stage two, an extended autofocusing method in the 2-D wavenumber domain based on the extended range migration algorithm (ERMA) compensates for the azimuth-variant motion errors and non-systematic range cell migration (NsRCM) for 2-D wide swath stripmap SAR data. After the ERMA and obtaining the coarse-focused image, the analytical structure of the residual 2-D phase error in the wavenumber domain is revealed. A nonlinear scaling equation is developed, relating the 1-D azimuth phase error to the 2-D phase error correction. The Ku-band stripmap ultrahigh-resolution microwave photonic (0.03 m) airborne SAR data are analyzed to verify the necessity and effectiveness of the proposed framework. A well-focused stripmap SAR image is obtained.

An approach to remove clouds in Landsat-8 operational land imager (OLI) data was developed with independent component analysis (ICA). Within cloud-covered areas, histograms were derived to quantify changes of the reflectance values before and after the use of the algorithm. Referred to a cloud-free image, changes of histogram curves validated the algorithm. Scatterplots were generated and linear regression performed for the reflectance values of each band before and after the algorithm, and compared to those of the reference image. Band-by-band, results in cloud removal were acceptable. The algorithm had little effect on pixels in cloud-free areas after the analyses of histograms, scatterplots, and linear regression equations. Finally, the algorithm was applied to various land use and land cover types and cloud conditions, and to a full Landsat-8 scene yielding satisfactory results efficiently.

The nonlinear variation of viewing angles over a long duration causes a nonlinear initial phase of the received pulse in a passive positioning system with a single moving receiver. Typical positioning systems ignore the phase and perform incoherent accumulation of the long-time data, thus resulting in a decrease in positioning accuracy, especially at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A novel passive positioning system with a synthetic aperture technique, named synthetic aperture positioning (SAP) system, is proposed to resolve the issue. First, a new 2-D continuous sampling working model is proposed. Then, the SAP system and a cost function are given to analyze the positioning performance. Third, a positioning algorithm based on the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is studied to handle the cost function and position the emitter. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed SAP system.
