Medical errors have been identified as one of the greatest evils in the field of healthcare, causing millions of patient deaths around the globe each year, especially in developing and poor countries. Globally, the social, economic, and personal impact of medical errors leads to a multi-trillion USD loss. Undoubtedly, medical errors are serious public health concerns in modern times, which could be mitigated by taking corrective measures. Different factors contribute to an increase in medical errors, including employees’ risk of burnout. Indeed, it was observed that hospital employees are more exposed to burnout situations compared to other fields. In this respect, managing hospital employees through transformational leadership (TL) may reduce the risk of burnout. However, surprisingly, studies on the relationship between TL and burnout are scarce in a healthcare system, indicating the existence of a critical knowledge gap. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the role of TL in reducing the risk of burnout among hospital employees. At the same time, this study also tests the mediating effects of resilience and role clarity with the conditional indirect effect of intrinsic motivation in the above-proposed relationship. To test different hypotheses, a hypothetical model was developed for which we collected the data from different hospital employees (n = 398). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was considered for statistical validation of hypotheses confirming that TL significantly reduces burnout. The results further indicated that resilience and role clarity mediate this relationship significantly. Lastly, the conditional indirect effect of intrinsic motivation was also confirmed. Our results provide meaningful insights to the hospital administrators to combat burnout, a critical reason for medical errors in hospitals. Further, by incorporating the TL framework, a hospital may reduce the risk of burnout (and, hence, medical errors); on the one hand, such a leadership style also provides cost benefits (reduced medical errors improve cost efficiency). Other different theoretical and practical contributions are discussed in detail.
This paper examines the impact of environmental uncertainty and environmental regulation on enterprises’ green technological innovation, using a panel data of Chinese A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2005 to 2019 to conduct an empirical study using an OLS model and Poisson regression model. We employ environmental complexity and environmental dynamism to measure environmental uncertainty, and we have the following findings: first, both environmental uncertainty and environmental regulation promote enterprises’ green technological innovation, while environmental regulation has positive moderating effects on the relationship between environmental uncertainty and enterprises’ green technological innovation; second, environmental complexity positively affects enterprises’ green technological innovation, while environmental dynamism has negative effects on enterprises’ green technological innovation; third, environmental regulation accentuates the relationship between environmental complexity and green technological innovation, while it weakens the relationship between environmental dynamism and green technological innovation.
The paper analyzes the effect of environmental uncertainty on corporate technological innovation from the perspective of an innovation value chain under the institutional background of China. This paper not only discusses the intermediary effect of agency problems on environmental uncertainty and corporate technological innovation but also deeply explores the influence of information transparency, government subsidies, and other mechanisms to alleviate agency problems on environmental uncertainty and corporate technological innovation. We use the data of listed companies in China from 2008 to 2019 as the research sample, and the results show that, in general, environmental uncertainty has a negative effect on both input and output of technological innovation, and the negative effect can last for two years. Further research shows that the agency problem has an intermediary effect on the environmental uncertainty and corporate technology innovation, and the environmental uncertainty aggravates the agency problem, which hinders the input and output of corporate technology innovation. As an important mechanism to alleviate the agency problems, information transparency and government subsidies can effectively alleviate the agency conflict, thus reducing the inhibition of environmental uncertainty on the input and output of technological innovation. Our findings contribute to the discussion of driving factors for technological innovation in the context of China’s system. Our results provide useful insights into the link between environmental uncertainty and corporate innovation for economic academics and practitioners alike.
Against the institutional background of building an innovative country, this article constructs the influence mechanism of the accounting standards for intangible assets for enterprise technology innovation. We select panel data from the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2002 to 2015. We focus on the two dimensions of innovation input and innovation output and use Poisson regression, negative binomial regression, zero expansion regression, and other methods to examine the effects of the revision of the intangible assets accounting standards on enterprise technology innovation. Our research reveals the following: (1) In general, the revision of the intangible assets accounting standards can promote enterprises’ technological innovation activities; (2) This effect is heterogeneous by ownership: before the revision of accounting standards for intangible assets, state-owned enterprises had more innovation input than non-state-owned enterprises, but the innovation output of non-state-owned enterprises has become greater than that of state-owned enterprises even though the policy only significantly improved the innovation output of the latter; and (3) The system lacks a continuous effect. The revision of the intangible assets accounting standards has only a one-year lag effect on the incentive effect of enterprise innovation input activities, mainly because enterprise innovation input has only a one- to two-year lag effect on output. The implementation of this system has not changed the status quo that Chinese patent rights are based on applied short-term technology research and development. Based on the findings, this article proposes some pertinent policy suggestions.
