Deep learning networks provide an end-to-end monitoring method for guided wave based structural health monitoring when the model is deep enough and the training samples are sufficient. However, it is still a great challenge to conveniently transfer one monitoring task to another task to establish a multi-task monitoring model. This paper proposes a multi-task integrated health monitoring method based on deep transfer learning to realize the monitoring task transference in the plate structure. First, the guided wave-convolutional neural network is used as a general feature extraction model to extract the high-level features, and shallow regression network is trained to assess the damage level. Then multi-task feature sharing mechanism is applied to catch the shared features and to ensure the model not specifically fit into a single task. Finally, a deep network with branches is designed to output multiple monitoring labels to realize the intelligent recognition of multi-task monitoring. The optimization of the network hyperparameters and the influence of different transfer mechanisms are further discussed, and the accuracy of the proposed method with transferred feature is considerably higher than direct training. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed method can effectively transfer the damage level monitoring model to damage location monitoring model, and the location detection accuracy reached 98.14% with 15.24% improvement compare with direct training. The proposed method also presents a better detection performance compared with many other deep learning methods.

Deep learning algorithm can effectively obtain damage information using labeled samples, and has become a promising feature extraction tool for ultrasonic guided wave detection. But it is difficult to apply the monitoring expertise of structure A to structure B in most cases due to the differences in the dispersion and receiving modes of different waveguides. For multi-structure monitoring at the system level, how to transfer a trained structural health monitoring model to another different structure remains a major challenge. In this article, a cross-structure ultrasonic guided wave structural health monitoring method based on distribution adaptation deep transfer learning is proposed to solve the feature generalization problem in different monitoring structures. First, the joint distribution adaptation method is employed to adapt both the marginal distribution and conditional distribution of the guided wave signals from different structures. Second, convolutional long short-term memory network is constructed to learn the mapping relationship from adapted training samples in source domain. Batch normalization layer is implemented to balance the input tensors of each sample to the same distribution. Finally, the multi-sensor damage indexes are utilized to visually present the damage by probability imaging. The experimental results show that proposed method can utilize the single-sensor monitoring data in one structure to implement the multi-sensor damage monitoring in another structure and achieve the damage imaging visualization. The imaging performance is significantly superior to the existing principal component analysis, transfer component analysis, and other state-of-art comparison methods.

Lined anti-corrosion pipes are widely used in oil and gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical industries. However, defects, especially delamination, may occur in the production and service of pipes which result in safety accidents. Based on nonlinear ultrasonic theory, this paper studied the delamination detection method using the nonlinear harmonics for lined anti-corrosion pipes. The response characteristics of the anti-corrosion pipe were obtained through a sweep sine response experiment and the preferred excitation frequency was determined. The Wavelet Packet transform and Hilbert–Huang transform is applied for signal process and feature extraction. Then, a series of experiments were carried out and the results were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that a second-order and third-order nonlinear coefficient increased with the delamination damage. The amplitude of second-harmonic is much stronger than the third-order one. The mean squared error of the nonlinear coefficient, which was processed by Wavelet Packet transform and Hilbert–Huang transform, is smaller than wavelet packet transform and Discrete Fourier transform or processed only Hilbert–Huang transform. The higher harmonics can describe the change of delamination damage, which means that the nonlinear ultrasonic detection method could use for damage detection of anti-corrosion pipe. The nonlinear higher-harmonic is sensitive to delamination damage. The nonlinear ultrasonic method has the potential for damage detection for lined anti-corrosion pipes.

Underwater pipelines are the channels for oil transportation in the sea. In the course of pipeline operation, leakage accidents occur from time to time for natural and man-made reasons which result in economic losses and environmental pollution. To avoid economic losses and environmental pollution, damage detection of underwater pipelines must be carried out. In this paper, based on the histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) and support vector machine (SVM), a non-contact ultrasonic imaging method is proposed to detect the shedding damage of the metal underwater pipeline external anti-corrosion layer. Firstly, the principle of acoustic scattering characteristics for detecting the metal underwater pipelines is introduced. Following this, a HOG+SVM image-extracting algorithm is used to extract the pipeline area from the underwater ultrasonic image. According to the difference of mean gray value in the horizontal direction of the pipeline project area, the shedding damage parts are identified. Subsequently, taking the metal underwater pipelines with three layers of polyethylene outer anti-corrosive coatings as the detection object, an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) for underwater pipelines defect detection is developed to verify the detection effect of the method. Finally, the underwater ultrasonic image which used to detect the metal underwater pipeline shedding damage is obtained by acoustic sensor. The results show that the shedding damage can be detected by the proposed method. With the increase of shedding damage width, the effect of pipeline defect location detection is better.

Debonding defects are common and they are the main reason for the failure of hidden frame supported glass curtain walls, which are widely used as an external enclosure and decorative structure. In this paper, a debonding detection method for hidden frame supported glass curtain walls is developed based on nonlinear ultrasonic modulation and piezoceramic transducers. First, the excitation frequency was determined according to the response characteristics. Then, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was applied to extract the feature components. After discrete Fourier transform (DFT), the nonlinear coefficients were calculated to evaluate the debonding defect. Finally, the experimental setup was established and a series of experiments were carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the nonlinear ultrasonic modulation method. The nonlinear harmonics detection method was also investigated and it was compared with the nonlinear ultrasonic modulation method. The detection effect at different temperatures and impact were studied. The results showed that the nonlinear coefficient increases with the debonding length. The mean squared error (MSE) of the nonlinear ultrasonic modulation method was improved by 41% compared with the nonlinear harmonics method. The nonlinear ultrasonic modulation method can successfully detect debonding defects in hidden frame supported glass curtain walls at different temperatures and impact.
