Recently, electrical power generation from oceanic waves is becoming very popular, as it is prospective, predictable, and highly available compared to other conventional renewable energy resources. In this paper, various types of nearshore, onshore, and offshore wave energy devices, including their construction and working principle, are explained explicitly. They include point absorber, overtopping devices, oscillating water column, attenuators, oscillating wave surge converters, submerged pressure differential, rotating mass, and bulge wave converter devices. The encounters and obstacles of electrical power generation from the oceanic wave are discussed in detail. The electrical power generation methods of the generators involved in wave energy devices are depicted. In addition, the vital control technologies in wave energy converters and devices are described for different cases. At present, piezoelectric materials are also being implemented in the design of wave energy converters as they convert mechanical motion directly into electrical power. For this reason, various models of piezoelectric material-based wave energy devices are illustrated. The statistical reports and extensive literature survey presented in this review show that there is huge potential for oceanic wave energy. Therefore, it is a highly prospective branch of renewable energy, which would play a significant role in the near future.

Recently, electrical engineers are paying great attention to develop oceanic wave energy conversion technologies based on the piezoelectric materials because of their excellent conveniences. Piezoelectric oceanic wave energy converters (OWECs) have several benefits over the others such as its small size, lightweight, no requirement of using intermediate device as well as having less negative impacts on the oceanic environment. Various review and research papers focus on the piezoelectric devices, their operation and application for oceanic energy conversion. But, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, none of the existing research or review papers present detailed scheme of piezoelectric device based power generation covering all the relevant topics as depicted in this review. This paper focuses different aspects of piezoelectric device based oceanic wave energy conversion technology including prospect, historical development, classification, operating principle, configuration, arrangement, model, processing, post-processing, and their test setups. In addition, technical challenges, future direction of research and critical review are also illustrated. It is assumed that, this paper would play a significant role for the future development of piezoelectric OWECs and the researcher working in this field.

In this paper, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is implemented as a grid-connected electrical generator that uses hydrogen gas as fuel and air as an oxidant to produce electricity through electrochemical reactions. Analysis demonstrated that the performance of the PEMFC greatly depends on the rate of fuel supply and air supply pressure. Critical fuel and air supply pressures of the PEMFC are analysed to test its feasibility for the grid connection. Air and fuel supply pressures are varied to observe the effects on the PEMFC characteristics, efficiency, fuel supply, and air consumption over time. The PEMFC model is then implemented into an electrical power system with the aid of power electronics applications. Detailed mathematical modelling of the PEMFC is discussed with justification. The PEMFC functions as an electrical generator that is connected to the local grid through a power converter and a transformer. Modulation of the converter is controlled by means of a proportional-integral controller. The two-axis control methodology is applied to the current control of the system. The output voltage waveform and control actions of the controller on the current and frequency of the proposed system are plotted as well. Simulation results show that the PEMFC performs efficiently under certain air and fuel pressures, and it can effectively supply electrical power to the grid.

The integration of battery energy storage (BES) with photovoltaic (PV) systems is becoming economically attractive for residential customers. The conventional approach for the interconnection of PV and battery systems requires at least two separate power converters that results in multistage power conversion for some power flows. The dc-dc three port converters (TPCs) are an alternative solution. These converters have many topological variants and possess different operating principles, topological benefits and limitations, and complexities. This paper concentrates on the topological study of TPCs for integrated PV and BESS applications in the power range from a few hundred watts to 350 kW. These are classified into three different categories based on their isolation features between the ports to establish a topological mapping of the reported TPCs. This provides a framework that systematically explores the full range of technical benefits and limitations of each TPC topology. This paper also examines the possible extension of the TPC topologies for grid-interactive PV-BES systems where bidirectional power flow capability is required between grid and BES systems. This extensive review will provide a useful framework and a strong point of reference for researchers for the selection of TPC topologies to meet the system requirements for PV and energy storage applications.

Almost all flux switching permanent magnet linear generators (FSPMLGs) and Vernier hybrid machines contain a heavy solid translator due to their design limitations for electricity generation from the oceanic waves. This paper presents the new design of an FSPMLG in which the translator weight is reduced and an additional static steel core is inserted inside the translator cavity to improve the magnetic flux linkage of the main stator. The generated voltage, current, power, efficiency, core loss, force ripples, and cogging force minimization of the proposed FSPMLG are presented. From the dynamic model of the oceanic wave, it is shown that the translator with lower mass could generate electricity more effectively. The special stator and translator sets have been optimized by using the genetic algorithm before they are used in the proposed FSPMLG. To analyze the performance and verify the feasibility of the new design of FSPMLG, finite element analysis is performed by using the commercial software package ANSYS/Ansoft.
