Population development is reflected by sustainable development indicators, among them are the indicators describing longevity and healthy aging. Longevity is reflected by life expectancy, and healthy aging is reflected by healthy life expectancy; high values of these indicators reflect good conditions of living for people. Life expectancy and healthy life expectancy analyses are of big interest among academics, policymakers, medical researchers, and others in order to direct the flow of funds in the most effective way possible to the population groups in most need. High life expectancy and low birth rate will lead to aging of the population, having profound implications on the school age population, politics, healthcare, labor force, social protection, social security issues, and public finances. Healthy life expectancy reflects health conditions, including the impacts of mortality and morbidity. As cardiovascular disease causes more than half of all deaths across Europe, this paper examines the influence of cardiovascular disease on longevity and healthy aging across Europe. The methodology was chosen so as to test the research hypotheses: (a) principal component analysis provided the socio-economic factors that are correlated to longevity and healthy aging; (b) regression analysis identified the relationship between healthy aging and cardiovascular disease; and (c) hierarchical cluster analysis allowed us to find common features of the groups of countries according to healthy aging and longevity.

This study highlights the perception of women entrepreneurs in Romania regarding specific drivers for a sustainable business model. This study uses a SWOT–AHP method to assess the importance of different factors that enforce or create barriers for the success in women entrepreneurial activities. SWOT analysis was conducted based on an extended literature review. An external expert in risk analysis assessed the importance of the SWOT analysis’ four dimensions—criteria. An AHP survey of 10 women entrepreneurs was conducted to evaluate the impact of each identified factor in sustaining or discouraging the success of their sustainable business model (SBM). The main results of the study present practical implications useful for designing a gender-balanced business environment. In the final part, the paper discusses women’s preference for the sustainable business model, the perceived importance of gender-related stereotypes for the development of sustainable business models, and the relevance of the new digital economy trend to Romanian women entrepreneurship.

Under the impact of unfavourable demographic developments, some existing imbalances on the Romanian labor market have worsened. Thus, in 2019 the labor force shortage was estimated to 300000 persons, while in the last ten years the number of vacancies has exceeded 60,000 places, more than double the level at the beginning of the period (2010). This phenomenon may have negative social and economic effects. In this context, the present paper aims at analysing the labor shortages in Romania, at identifying its main determinants and the most important social and economic consequences and recommends a series of measures to mitigate the negative effects of this phenomenon.

An important part of migration represents the brain drain, especially the migration of physicians. Romania has a health system in continuous reform, facing for over 3 decades a shortage of employees. Moreover, employed specialists and young physicians migrated, the health care system registering a medium efficiency. The number of migrant physicians from Romania followed an ascending trend, and this had negative consequences on Romanian population health. The main objective of this paper is identifying the profile and the dynamics of the migrant physician from Romania. Other objective is highlighting the Romanian counties where most physicians migrated from and the preferred destination countries.

The fiscal analysis is an important research topic, aiming at identifying/creating fair fiscal systems, which can respond to requests coming from both the state (which needs revenue to finance various public projects) and from taxpayers. The economic agents, but also the taxpayers will always want a reduction of the taxes, and the public decider aims to increase the revenues attracted to the budget through (higher) taxes. An optimal tax system could be characterized by taxes that produce minimal effects of distorting the behavior of taxpayers, as well as a positive impact on the development of society.

Under the umbrella of the MIS ETC 2617 ALECTOR, a project within the ENPI CBC BLACK SEA JOINT OPERATIONAL PROGRAMME 2007–2013, a novel cultural heritage infrastructure with three components has been developed to communicate local heritage to international audiences. A cross-border partnership, operating in seven countries (Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Georgia and Turkey), has developed standards for heritage tourism by involving key stakeholders, local communities and citizens into heritage planning in a bottom-up and training process. The project has been completed in a 30 month period with an overall budget of 1,065,894.00 EUR. The main result SCRIPTORAMA, a three-component Open Street Museum, accessible through 90 Quick Response Codes in the territory and as eBook at the Appstore and Google Play, is delivering the heritage experience by engaging in a constant dialogue heritage suppliers and heritage users. This paper examines (a) how cognitive-emotional and multi-sensory experiences can foster an (inter)-active knowledge acquisition pattern for non-captive audiences at heritage places; (b) how to integrate new technologies into the cultural heritage experience to support the informal learning modus; and (c) how to democratize the mission of heritage institutions by promoting self-reflective and critically thinking visitors who can perceive, reshape and organize heritage places into a participatory public space accessible by all.

Tourism activity is an important driver of the global economy, ensuring monetary circulation, through tourism receipts, to other economic circuits. By developing tourism activities, countries can increase their national production, with a positive effect on their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Tourism services and cultural products should be promoted together in development efforts, as generators for regional progress in areas with partially valued heritage potential. A strategic and integrated approach of sustainable cultural heritage tourism development must include all types of externalities, both positive and negative, and should be included in local policies for development as a priority, offering economically driven opportunities. Intensive development of tourism, which contributes to an increased added value, must be implemented in services through technology. Cultural heritage, promoted through tourism, creates jobs, drives innovation, supports public services development and local entrepreneurship (including transport and communication infrastructures), generates prosperity, and encourages participation of citizens. This chapter presents proposals and recommendations for national policies and strategies for ensuring that inbound tourism, based on current national and cultural heritage, constitutes a supplementary factor to economic growth in the region.

Revitalizing rural areas can be done on the basis of innovative ideas provided by well-trained staff with high skill levels. Education and training should be a priority due to the continuing high rate of growth in the demand for new skills in the labor market. Currently, employers are seeking, in the labor market, people with social skills, computer skills, foreign language speakers, and people who demonstrate initiative, coming up with new ideas which may be productive for businesses. People have become more sensitive about the environment, they are more educated and seek quality in both services and products. This cannot be provided without the assistance of stakeholders (local communities, authorities, entrepreneurs, employees, trainers, etc.) who also need to be trained in accordance with their duties and roles.

Using official statistics at national level, the paper aims to contribute to tourism studies in Romania from the perspective of employment in tourism industry. Romania’s specific characteristics will be identified in terms of quality and structure of employment. National level is considered for analysing the social productivity of labour in terms of GDP and employment for the tourism sector. The quality of employment is reviewed also in terms of permanency of job and average seniority of work with the same employer. The employment is analysed from the perspective of full-time and part-time activity, age groups and educational attainment level.

According to the data provided by the National Institute of Statistics, in Romania, in 2015, there were recorded almost ten million tourist arrivals in accommodation establishments, of which foreign tourist arrivals represented less than a quarter (22.55%). After 2000, tourist arrivals have registered an upward trend, interrupted only during the global economic and financial crisis in 2008–2009. Over 57% of foreign tourists arrivals in Romania in 2015 came from the European Union (mostly from Hungary and Bulgaria), and from Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In 2014, only 5% of companies in Romania were operating in the hotel and restaurant industry, their turnover representing less than 1% of the total value. The average length of stay for Romanian tourists ranges between 2 days (at the mountain) and over 3 days (at the seaside). Foreign tourist arrivals are mostly concentrated in mountain areas, in Bucharest, and in other cities as well. This paper identifies and explores—using methods of descriptive statistics and factor analysis—patterns existing in relationships between different tourism statistical indicators (arrivals of Romanian tourists, arrivals of foreign tourists, overnight staying for Romanian and foreign tourists, tourism accommodation capacity, tourism accommodation establishments, favorite tourism destinations). Thus, there are analyzed the essential components and characteristics of the main types of tourism developed in Romania and some measures of economic and social policy are proposed, aiming at optimizing tourism activity in Romania.

This paper investigates the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and remittances on Economic Growth (EG), using panel data of seven countries from Central and Eastern Europe with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita under 25,000 $. The empirical literature stressed the relationships between FDI and remittances and economic growth, and our purpose is to identify if there are significant relationships between FDI, remittances and economic growth in the seven analyzed countries. We find a positive impact of both FDI and remittances on GDP, but the influence of FDI is higher in all analyzed states, with accepting the assumption of ceteris paribus principles in limiting research caused by other possible determinants.

Measurement of middle class is not an easy task due to several reasons. Firstly, it impose the elaboration of a classification of population into social classes, for which it is necessary to take into consideration some objective criteria, as level of incomes, occupation or level of education, skills or others, but also subjective criteria as the prestige of the profession or company, manual or non-manual character of work, social category of family or residential area where person was born. Bigger the number of criteria taken into account is, bigger the subjectivity of the classification is. Another difficult issue is related to the availability of data sources allowing the estimation of middle class. Ordinary data sources, namely the sample surveys, use major classifications’ classes, which make less detailed the analysis. This article proposes to present a first perspective, strictly quantitative, regarding the measurement of middle class in Romania, through the indicator of population's incomes. The authors use two approaches in order to estimate middle class: an absolute one and a relative one. In the relative approach, the middle class is defines as the category of persons which represents one third from the total population, that third which carry-out the median part of the income distribution. On the contrary, in the absolute approach, the middle class contains the persons which have the incomes included in the second interval of the income distribution. For each of those two approaches, the article presents the main characteristics of the persons defined as middle class..

Even though the unemployment rate remains the main indicator that measures the labor underutilization, it is not able to reflect the total lack of work in a country, but also other insufficiencies to capture the volume of work at national level. The statistical community devoted efforts to introduce supplementary measures to quantify of work underutilization, in order to have a better view of less employment and wasted working time. The main objective of the present paper is to analyze the underutilization of the capacity of the labour force in Romania in line with the demographic, social characteristics as well as education level and status in employment. The paper will also reflect an evidence of disparities of different category of underemployment across the geographical regions in the country and the main reasons of labour underutilization.

The creation of both the Economic and Monetary Union and of the single common market have meant two very important steps in getting a more and more compact Union. The first step regarding EMU lead to the adoption of a single currency and to the elimination of the exchange rates fluctuations, while the second one lead to the elimination of physical, administrative and technical barriers in order to achieve a sustainable economic growth and a stimulation of competition. These two aims are frequently monitored, among the indicators measuring their fulfilment being those concerning prices: The harmonised index of consumer prices and the price level index. The purpose of this paper is to present the price convergence in Romania measured on the base of HICP and the price level estimated in the PEC framework.

The paper will be focused on the state of art in the field of social inclusion in relation with the quality of life and its material dimension. The main aspects regarding the material dimension of life quality refer to the income – households and individuals –, lack of durable goods, sever material deprivation, people living in households with low intensity of work etc. A particular concern should be attributed to the prevention of poverty and social exclusion, more specific the measurement of the risk of falling into poverty or social exclusion. Moreover, this is also one of the main objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy. Therefore, the paper will emphasize the situation for the Romanian society in respect of poverty and social inclusion including trends and characteristics. The topic is of high actuality and the findings of the paper will show the main areas where the national policies and strategies should be tailored for an adequate implementation with the aim of reaching the proposed targets.
