European aviation plays a key role in serving society’s needs for safe, secure and sustainable mobility in Europe and all over the world. Its impact on European economy is significant and must be sustained. Environmental protection is and will continue to be a key driver for the aviation industry as a whole. Meeting community expectations on aircraft noise, engine emission and fuel/energy consumption has always presented a challenge to aircraft and engine manufacturers and to those involved in airport planning and air traffic management. The paper describes the current points of the EU civil aviation on a way to ACARE FlightPath 2050 Challenge 3 goals, defined in PARE project at mid-term stage.

Aircraft performance and noise database together with operational weights (depending on flight distances) and operational procedures (including low noise procedures) significantly influence results of noise exposure contour maps assessment in conditions of real atmosphere. Current recommendations of the Standard SAE-AIR1845A allow the definition of flight profiles via solutions of balanced motion equations. However, differences are still supervised between the measured sound level data and calculated ones, especially in assessing the single flight noise events. Some of them are well explained by differences between balanced flight parameters (thrust and velocity first of all) and monitored ones by the traffic control system. Statistical data were gathered to make more general view on these differences and some proposal to use them in calculations has been proven. Besides, the real meteorological parameters provide inhomogeneous atmosphere conditions always, which are quite different from the main assumptions of the SAE-AIR1845A, stipulating inaccuracies of sound level calculations.

Climate change is the megatrend that will have the biggest impact on the development of sustainable air transportation in near future. Aviation is expected to triple its proportional share of a Paris compatible 1.5 °C budget, declared by UNFCCC Agreement for global temperature through 2050 under current international policies. Basket of measures proposed by ICAO to keep the temperature change under this limit, including aircraft technology (up to 25%) and operation improvement (up to 9%) for fuel burn reduction by engines and new revolutionary architectures of the aircraft, deployment of sustainable alternative fuels (over 40% of fuel burn reduction), market based measures (ICAO CORSIA) as pushing system for more quick and efficient implementation of the first three, etc. Pioneering sustainable technology is allowing the civil aviation sector to embrace the next generation of aviation through electrification and alternative fuel sources. Electric propulsion is proposed as one of the revolutionary technology changes in aviation, which should be assessed on possible contribution in reaching the climate change goal and one of the environmental goals of the EU strategic document Flightpath 2050. Existing potential and forecasted progress for More Electric Aircraft concept is showing quite limited reduction in fuel burn and emission. Full electric or hybrid propulsion may provide essential reduction, but in considered time frame it is looking to be very possible for implementation in groups of General Aviation, Urban Air Taxis and Regional Aircraft first of all. More than 90% of GHG emissions from global commercial aircraft operations are generated by Large Commercial Aircraft, so research to reduce commercial aircraft emissions will be most useful if it focuses on technology applicable to them.

The growth of world aviation traffic leads to an increase of the impact on the environment that is now becoming one of the main factors determining the development of the aviation industry. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become an attractive tool to predict pollutant concentration in the real environment. CFD software represents the most advanced mathematics that can be applied to simulation different physical process, including the transfer and dilution of fluid flow from aircraft, vehicle and other sources. This paper is an attempt to compare numerical simulation results of exhaust gases jet from aircraft near aerodrome surface by three CFD codes: Fluent 6.3, OpenFOAM and SolidWorks. The work is also focused on assessment of the aerodrome surface influence on jet’s parameters (height and longitudinal coordinate of buoyancy effect) and on providing of initial data for further dispersion modeling. The obtained results are also aimed to improve complex model PolEmiCa.

Safety is not defined as a total absence of hazards, it is a state in which hazards and conditions leading to physical, psychological or material harm are controlled in order to preserve (protect) the health and well-being of individuals and the community. Civil aviation sector is a huge system, contributing essentially in global and any national GDP, and any harmful event inside the system may decrease such a contribution sufficiently. Analytical modeling of the system safety is used to describe the relationships between the causes, dangers and effects of system states in its various operational scenarios. For activities, which characterized with a significant quantitative risk assessment, an approach can suggest for assessing the acceptability of risk. Risk is assessed according to the hazard identification, associated with the probability of adverse events and their consequences. The approach uses two types of risk: individual and societal. A number of events must occur if a main stressor should take place with conditional probability of their realization. Framework for risk assessment and reduction is considered also.
