Biography

G. Santos-López is a Principal Researcher at Eastern Biomedical Research Center (CIBIOR, http://cibior.blogspot.mx/), Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS; https://www.cienciaimss.org/gerardosantoslopez) holds a MSc in Microbiology from Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla, Mexico and a PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies, Mexico. He has been a Visiting Professor at CERMAV and the Joseph Fourier University, Grenoble France. Currently, Dr. Santos-López coordinates a research group at Laboratory of Virology (http://virologia-cibior.blogspot.mx/) in CIBIOR-IMSS. His main lines of research are diagnosis, epidemiology, viral pathogenesis and development of antivirals. The viral diseases studied include influenza, dengue, Zika, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and COVID-19. Viral infections are a major global health concern. In our research group we try to contribute in distinct aspects to fight against viral infections. We study epidemiological aspects such as prevalence and risk factors of acquiring infections; as well as the identification of host and viral factors related to susceptibility or resistance to treatments and aspects of pathogenic mechanisms in acute or chronic infections. A very important aspect is also the search for markers of progression or severity and new treatments for viral infections.
