Associate Professor Roo Kalatehjari is the Associate Dean Academic at the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies, Auckland University of Technology (AUT). He is an expert in mining and geotechnics with 15 years of experience in academia and research, specialising in Resilient Ground Engineering. His research focuses on developing sustainable, low-carbon solutions for geotechnical applications and construction materials by utilising geopolymers, alkali-activated binders, and industrial by-products and wastes. Beyond materials, he applies computational modelling, geotechnical analysis, and predictive artificial intelligence simulations to enhance understanding of soil behaviour, slope stability, tunnelling, urban infrastructure, and ground improvement. These approaches contribute to the development of climate-resilient and sustainable geotechnical systems that ensure long-term infrastructure performance under extreme conditions.
Roo received his PhD in Civil Engineering (Geotechnics) from the University of Technology Malaysia, his Master of Science in Mining Engineering from the Tehran Science and Research Branch of Islamic Azad University, and his Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from Shahrood University of Technology, Iran. Following his PhD, he completed postdoctoral research at the University of Technology Malaysia and the National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan.
