Efficient scheduling algorithms are key for attaining high performance in heterogeneous computing systems. In this paper, we propose a new list scheduling algorithm for assigning task graphs to fully connected heterogeneous processors with an aim to minimize the scheduling length. The proposed algorithm, called Improved Predict Priority Task Scheduling (IPPTS) algorithm has two phases: task prioritization phase, which gives priority to tasks, and processor selection phase, which selects a processor for a task. The IPPTS algorithm has a quadratic time complexity as the related algorithms for the same goal, that is O(t 2 x p), for t tasks and p processors. Our algorithm reduces the scheduling length significantly by looking ahead in both task prioritization phase and processor selection phase. In this way, the algorithm is looking ahead to schedule a task and its heaviest successor task to the optimistic processor, i.e., the processor that minimizes their computation and communication costs. The experiments based on both randomly generated graphs and graphs of real-world applications show that the IPPTS algorithm significantly outperforms previous list scheduling algorithms in terms of makespan, speedup, makespan standard deviation, efficiency, and frequency of best results.
With significant development of sensors and Internet of things (IoT), researchers nowadays can easily know what happens in water ecosystem by acquiring water images. Essentially, growing data category and size greatly contribute to solving water pollution problems. In this paper, we focus on classifying water images to sub-categories of clean and polluted water, thus promoting instant feedback of a water pollution monitoring system that utilizes IoT technology to capture water image. Due to low inter-class and high intra-class differences of captured water images, water image classification is challenging. Inspired by the ability to extract highly distinguish features of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), we aim to construct an attention neural network for IoT captured water images classification that appropriately encodes channel-wise and multi-layer properties to accomplish feature representation enhancement. During construction, we firstly propose channel-wise attention gate structure and then utilize it to construct a hierarchical attention neural network in local and global sense. We carried out comparative experiments on an image dataset about water surface with several studies, which showed the effectiveness of the proposed attention neural network for water image classification. We applied the proposed neural network as a key part of a water image based pollution monitoring system, which helps users to monitor water pollution breaks in real-time and take instant actions to deal with pollution.
With significant development of sensors and Internet of things, researchers nowadays can easily know what happens in physical space by acquiring time-varying values of various factors. Essentially, growing data category and size greatly contribute to solve problems happened in physical space. In this paper, we aim to solve a complex problem that affects both cities and villages, i.e., flood. To reduce impacts induced by floods, hydrological factors acquired from physical space and data-driven models in cyber space have been adopted to accurately forecast floods. Considering the significance of modeling attention capability among hydrology factors, we believe extraction of discriminative hydrology factors not only reflect natural rules in physical space, but also optimally model iterations of factors to forecast run-off values in cyber space. Therefore, we propose a novel data-driven model named as STA-LSTM by integrating Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) structure and spatiotemporal attention module, which is capable of forecasting floods for small- and medium-sized rivers. The proposed spatiotemporal attention module firstly explores spatial relationship between input hydrological factors from different locations and run-off outputs, which assigns time-varying weights to various factors. Afterwards, the proposed attention module allocates temporal-dependent weights to hidden output of each LSTM cell, which describes significance of state output for final forecasting results. Taking Lech and Changhua river basins as cases of physical space, several groups of comparative experiments show that STA-LSTM is capable to optimize complexity of mathematically modeling floods in cyber space.
