In recent years, there has been extensive research and continuous development on second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal materials due to their potential applications in telecommunications, THz imaging and spectroscopy, optical information processing, and optical data storage. Recent progress in second-order NLO ionic organic crystal materials is reviewed in this article. Research has shown that the second-order nonlinear optical properties of organic crystal materials are closely related to their molecular structures. The basic structures of ionic organic conjugated molecules with excellent nonlinear optical properties are summarized. The effects of molecular structure, for example, conjugated π electron systems, electronic properties of donor-acceptor groups, and different counter-anion effects on second order NLO properties and crystal packing are studied.

Cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) materials with broadband reflection are witnessing a significant surge in interest due to their unique ability to self-organize into a helical supra-molecular architecture and their excellent selective reflection of light based on the Bragg relationship. Nowadays, by the virtue of building self-organized nanostructures with pitch gradient or non-uniform pitch distribution, extensive work has already been performed to obtain ChLC films with a broad reflection band. This critical review systematically summarizes the optical background of the ChLCs with broadband reflection characteristics, methods to obtain broadband reflection of ChLCs, as well as the application in this area. Combined with the research status and the advantages in the field, the challenges and opportunities of applied scientific problems in the research direction are also introduced.

Liquid crystalline blue phases (BPs), being regarded as an emerging photonic material, have attracted enormous research interest owing to their unique periodic nanostructures and potential applications in displays, sensing, switching, lasing and other fields. In this paper, we have reviewed the recent progress on BP materials, including broadening the BP temperature range, controlling the BP-lattice orientations and stimuli-responsive BPs. These advances are dedicated to constructing stable BPs and fabricating monodomain BPs or single-crystal BPs, and dynamically controlling the nanostructures of BPs under diverse external stimuli, such as light, electric field, heat, magnetic field and stretching, etc. This work provides significant insights into the construction and development of BP materials for novel liquid crystalline optical devices.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films are fabricated by well-known polymerization-induced phase separation method. In this paper, the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in liquid crystals has been enhanced by chemical modification and we have investigated their effects on the morphology, electro-optical properties and conductivity of the PDLC films. Results indicated that the threshold voltage and the saturation voltage of PDLC films decreased with the increase of the doping concentration of MWCNT or chemically modified MWCNT, because carbon nanotubes can enhance the electric field by reducing the resistivity of the medium and increasing the capacitance of the cells. It can be viewed obviously that the contrast ratio of the PDLC films doped with the chemically modified MWCNT is higher than that of the MWCNT.

In this study, we demonstrate a novel method for fabricating polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) films with non-uniform pitch distribution by utilizing two kinds of photo-induced processes.
