We demonstrate a broadband near-100%-efficiency ultrathin metasurface operating at microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies. We develop and employ two orthogonally polarized metallic gratings to form a Fabry–Perot cavity and incorporate a subwavelength metallic double-split-ring resonator at the center of each unit cell. It allows arbitrary amplitude-phase combinations with no coupling between amplitude and phase or between transmitted and reflected waves, leading to the design of an ultrathin but highly efficient broadband metasurface with multiple functionalities. Furthermore, the proposed metasurface can generate diffractive beams with different orders and vortex beams with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in reflection and transmission spaces simultaneously. Both numerical and experimental results verify that the proposed metasurface has superior performance to its counterparts that are based solely on phase control. The proposed metasurface presents a lightweight, low-cost, and easily deployable flat device for microwave and millimeter-wave applications.

We study the focusing properties of a double-ring-shaped azimuthally polarized beam through an annular high NA objective lens. It is shown that a subwavelength focal hole (∼0.5λ) with a quite long depth of focus (∼26λ) is achieved near the focus. This kind of nondiffracting focal hole is called dark channel, which may have applications in atom optical experiments, such as with atomic lenses, atom traps, and atom switches.

The focusing properties of partially coherent Bessel–Gaussian beams passing through a high-numerical-aperture objective are studied based on vectorial Debye theory. Expressions for the intensity distribution, degree of coherence ∣μ∣, and degree of polarization P are derived near the focus. Numerical calculations are performed to analyze the influences of varying corresponding parameters on the intensity distribution, ∣μ∣, and P in the focal region. It is shown that the intensity, ∣μ∣, and P in the focal region are all influenced by varying the effective coherent length Lc of incident beams and maximal angle α determined by the numerical aperture of the objective. Also, the linearly polarized incident field is found to be depolarized after it is focused by a high-numerical-aperture objective.

Unconventional systems that adopt the concept of ghost schemes have led to advancements in some imaging applications. However, their application in quantitative phase imaging remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a basis for quantitative phase imaging with ghost diffraction and demonstrate ghost diffraction holographic microscopy for complex-valued imaging. We achieve this by introducing an off-axis holography approach in the modified ghost diffraction system. We also realize a correlation hologram in the cross-correlation of intensities from two detectors in the modified ghost diffraction setup and digitally process the correlation hologram to image complex-valued objects. To generate experiment results, we use a modified interferometer setup and exploit the spatial statistics of the scattered field from a time-frozen pseudothermal light source. Finally, we evaluate the efficacy of the approach by simulation and follow that with experiments that demonstrate imaging of pure phase objects, planar transparencies, and resolution test targets, among others.

We propose a new method to determine topological charge by using an improved Fizeau interferometer. This interferometer is very easy to realize, as well as interference fringes are very distinct. Phases of vortex, Hermite-Gaussian, and elliptical vortex beams are experimentally verified using this method. It provides a convenient way to determine the sign and magnitude of topological charge. This method may have some potential applications in space optical communication.
