One new meroterpenoid, named 2-hydroacetoxydehydroaustin (1), together with nine known meroterpenoids, 11-acetoxyisoaustinone (2), isoaustinol (3), austin (4), austinol (5), acetoxydehydroaustin (6), dehydroaustin (7), dehydroaustinol (8), preaustinoid A2 (9), and 1,2-dihydro-acetoxydehydroaustin B (10), were isolated from the mangrove endophytic fungus, Aspergillus sp. 16-5c. These structures were characterized by spectroscopic analysis, further the absolute configurations of stereogenic carbons for Compounds 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis using Cu Kα radiation. Moreover, the absolute configurations of stereogenic carbons for Known Compounds 3, 7, 8, and 9 are identified here for the first time. Compounds 3, 7, and 8 showed acetylcholinesterase (AchE) inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 2.50, 0.40, and 3.00 μM, respectively.

Racemic dinaphthalenone derivatives, (±)-asperlone A (1) and (±)-asperlone B (2), and two new azaphilones, 6′-hydroxy-(R)-mitorubrinic acid (3) and purpurquinone D (4), along with four known compounds, (−)-mitorubrinic acid (5), (−)-mitorubrin (6), purpurquinone A (7) and orsellinic acid (8), were isolated from the cultures of Aspergillus sp. 16-5C. The structures were elucidated using comprehensive spectroscopic methods, including 1D and 2D NMR spectra and the structures of 1 further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, while the absolute configuration of 3 and 4 were determined by comparing their optical rotation and CD with those of the literature, respectively. Compounds 1, 2 and 6 exhibited potent inhibitory effects against Mycobacterium tuberculosis protein tyrosine phosphatase B (MptpB) with IC50 values of 4.24 ± 0.41, 4.32 ± 0.60 and 3.99 ± 0.34 μM, respectively.

Vernonia patula Merr. (VP) is a traditional medicine used by the Zhuang and Yao people, known for its therapeutic properties in treating anemopyretic cold and other diseases. Distinguishing VP from similar varieties such as Praxelis clematidea (PC), Ageratum conyzoides L. (AC) and Ageratum houstonianum Mill (AH) was challenging due to their similar traits and plant morphology. The HPLC fingerprints of 40 batches of VP and three similar varieties were established. SPSS 20.0 and SIMCA-P 13.0 were used to statistically analyze the chromatographic peak areas of 37 components. The results showed that the similarity of the HPLC fingerprints for each of the four varieties was >0.9, while the similarity between the control chromatogram of VP and its similar varieties was <0.678. Cluster analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis provided consistent results, indicating that all four varieties could be individually clustered together. Through further analysis, we found isochlorogenic acid A and isochlorogenic acid C were present only in the original VP, while preconene II was present in the three similar varieties of VP. These three components are expected to be identification points for accurately distinguishing VP from PC, AC and AH.

Large amounts of banana leaves are discarded as agricultural waste during banana harvesting; however, they are rich in bioactive compounds with promising exploitation potential. The ethyl acetate fraction contains the highest levels of total phenolics and total flavonoids together with strong antioxidant activity, which renders it a candidate source of natural antioxidants. In our current study, HPLC fingerprints were constructed for ten batches of ethyl acetate extracts from banana leaves (BLEA), and fingerprint similarity evaluation coupled with statistical analysis of common peak areas was carried out. Meanwhile, an HPLC quantitative method was developed to simultaneously determine eight characteristic components. The similarity values between the fingerprints of ten batches and the reference fingerprint ‘R’ ranged from 0.791 to 0.988. Cluster analysis (CA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) yielded consistent results, revealing clear separation trends among samples from different batches. In this quantitative method, eight characteristic analytes showed favorable linearity within their respective concentration ranges (r ≥ 0.9997). The average recoveries ranged from 101.6% to 104.3%, with RSD of 0.32% to 0.84%, demonstrating that the quantitative method was accurate and reliable. HPLC fingerprint combined with multi-component content determination offers a scientific basis for the quality evaluation and biomass valorization of banana leaves.
