Abscisic acid (ABA), one of the six major plant hormones, plays an essential and irreplaceable role in numerous physiological and biochemical processes during normal plant growth and in response to abiotic stresses. It is a key factor in balancing endogenous hormones and regulating growth metabolism in plants. The level of ABA is intricately regulated through complex mechanisms involving biosynthesis, catabolism, and transport. The functionality of ABA is mediated through a series of signal transduction pathways, primarily involving core components such as the ABA receptors PYR/PYL/RCAR, PP2C, and SnRK2. Over the past 50 years since its discovery, most of the genes involved in ABA biosynthesis, catabolism, and transport have been characterized, and the network of signaling pathways has gradually become clearer. Extensive research indicates that externally increasing ABA levels and activating the ABA signaling pathway through molecular biology techniques significantly enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses and improve plant productivity under adverse environmental conditions. Therefore, elucidating the roles of ABA in various physiological processes of plants and deciphering the signaling regulatory network of ABA can provide a theoretical basis and guidance for addressing key issues such as improving crop quality, yield, and stress resistance.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are major contributors to food spoilage, animal diseases, and the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in healthcare, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatments. Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have gained attention for their non-toxic nature and strong antimicrobial properties. LAB-derived bacteriocins have been successfully applied in food preservation and are classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as ‘food-grade’ or ‘generally recognized as safe’ (GRAS). This review summarizes recent progress in the production, purification, and emerging applications of LAB bacteriocins. It emphasizes their versatility in food preservation, agriculture, and medicine, providing insights into their role in antimicrobial development and functional food innovation.

Cryptochromes are blue light receptors that regulate plant growth and development. They also act as the core components of the central clock oscillator in animals. Although plant cryptochromes have been reported to regulate the circadian clock in blue light, how they do so is unclear. Here we show that Arabidopsis cryptochrome 2 (CRY2) forms photobodies with the TCP22 transcription factor in response to blue light in plant cells. We provide evidence that PPK kinases influence the characteristics of these photobodies and that together these components, along with LWD transcriptional regulators, can positively regulate the expression of CCA1 encoding a central component of the circadian oscillator.

Phytohormone ABA regulates the expression of numerous genes to significantly affect seed dormancy, seed germination and early seedling responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the function of many ABA-responsive genes remains largely unknown. In order to improve the ABA-related signaling network, we conducted a large-scale ABA phenotype screening. LSH, an important transcription factor family, extensively participates in seedling development and floral organogenesis in plants, but whether its family genes are involved in the ABA signaling pathway has not been reported. Here we describe a new function of the transcription factor LSH8 in an ABA signaling pathway. In this study, we found that LSH8 was localized in the nucleus, and the expression level of LSH8 was significantly induced by exogenous ABA at the transcription level and protein level. Meanwhile, seed germination and root length measurements revealed that lsh8 mutant lines were ABA insensitive, whereas LSH8 overexpression lines showed an ABA-hypersensitive phenotype. With further TMT labeling quantitative proteomic analysis, we found that under ABA treatment, ABA-responsive proteins (ARPs) in the lsh8 mutant presented different changing patterns with those in wild-type Col4. Additionally, the number of ARPs contained in the lsh8 mutant was 397, six times the number in wild-type Col4. In addition, qPCR analysis found that under ABA treatment, LSH8 positively mediated the expression of downstream ABA-related genes of ABI3, ABI5, RD29B and RAB18. These results indicate that in Arabidopsis, LSH8 is a novel ABA regulator that could specifically change the expression pattern of APRs to positively mediate ABA responses.

Cryptochromes are photolyase-like blue light receptors that are conserved in plants and animals. Although the light-dependent catalytic mechanism of photolyase is well studied, the photochemical mechanism of cryptochromes remains largely unknown. Lack of an appropriate protein expression system to obtain photochemically active cryptochrome holoproteins is a technical obstacle for the study of plant cryptochromes. We report here an easy-to-use method to express and study Arabidopsis cryptochrome in HEK293T cells. Our results indicate that Arabidopsis cryptochromes expressed in HEK293T are photochemically active. We envision a broad use of this method in the functional investigation of plant proteins, especially in the large-scale analyses of photochemical activities of cryptochromes such as blue light-dependent protein-protein interactions.

Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) serves as a critical global source of plant-based protein and oil, yet the inverse relationship between seed protein content (PC) and oil content (OC) remains a major barrier to simultaneous improvement. Recent advances in genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics have elucidated key regulatory genes and networks underlying these traits, including GmWRI1a, LEC2, Glyma.20G085100, and the LAFL transcriptional module. These findings reveal that carbon and nitrogen resource partitioning during seed maturation is tightly coordinated by pleiotropic regulators, many of which mediate metabolic trade-offs that limit dual optimization. Although certain wild soybean loci and “bridge genes” like GmSWEET39 show potential to partially uncouple PC–OC antagonism, their effects are often context-dependent and modest in scale. This review synthesizes current understanding of the genetic architecture and metabolic frameworks that shape oil and protein accumulation in soybean seeds. It highlights promising molecular breeding strategies—including phase-specific gene regulation, CRISPR-mediated multiplex editing, and the stacking of favorable alleles—to overcome long-standing trade-offs. By leveraging multi-omics integration and functional VALidation in diverse germplasm, future soybean breeding programs can more effectively develop high-protein, high-oil cultivars tailored to both nutritional and industrial demands.
