The photovoltaic (PV) technology has a small impact on the environment and is suitable for a wide range of applications. The main barrier for a more extensive implementation has been the reliability, mainly related to the power converters. According to this consideration, this paper presents an open-circuit fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant scheme for a three-level boost converter in a PV power system using batteries as storage devices. The fault diagnostic method takes advantage only of the control variables used for maximum power point tracking and output dc-link capacitor voltage balance. The fault-tolerant strategy requires only a few components added to the original three-level boost converter, so that, under an open-circuit power switch fault, it can be partly reconfigured into a two-level boost converter ensuring battery energy supply. Experimental results verify the proposed fault diagnostic method and reconfiguration for fault-tolerant operation.

Interleaved dc-dc converters have been widely applied, because of their benefits related to efficiency, size, thermal management, modularity, and output current ripple cancellation. These converters present an enhanced fault tolerance capability, but an open-circuit fault can leads to ripple beyond load requirements. This paper presents a fault-diagnostic method for interleaved dc-dc converters using only the dc-link current derivative sign features. The dc-link current derivative is thoroughly studied for both healthy and faulty modes. Its sign variation during different time intervals defined by the number of switches in conduction mode contains important information for open-circuit fault detection. The presented method is robust to transients and current imbalance between phases and no additional sensors are required. A photovoltaic system application is presented to validate this method.

The objective of the paper is to assess the feasibility of the neural network (NN) approach in power plant process evaluations. A “feed-forward” technique with a back propagation algorithm was applied to a gas turbine equipped with waste heat boiler and water heater. Data from physical or empirical simulators of plant components were used to train such a NN model. Results obtained using a conventional computing technique are compared with those of the direct method based on a NN approach. The NN simulator was able to perform calculations in a really short computing time with a high degree of accuracy, predicting various steady-state operating conditions on the basis of inputs that can be easily obtained with existing plant instrumentation. The optimization of NN parameters like number of hidden neurons, training sample size, and learning rate is discussed in the paper.

At the turn of the 21st century, urban development has experienced a paradigm shift so that the quest for smarter cities has become a priority agenda, with the direct participation of industry, policy makers, practitioners, and the scientific community alike. The 2008 financial crisis, the exodus from rural areas, and the densification of urban centers coupled with environmental and sustainability concerns has posed enormous challenges to municipalities all over the globe. The United Nations predicts that the world population will reach 9.8 billion by 2050, a growth of 2.1 billion from the 2018 level. Almost all of this population growth will occur in urban areas and, consequently, stress already overloaded transportation systems.

The reliability of bidirectional dc-dc converters is a critical issue in many applications where the power flows from or to energy storage systems regularly, such as automotive applications and standalone power systems. This paper addresses dual active bridge converters faulty operation and proposes a fault detection method.
