The weld defects inspection from radiography films is critical for assuring the serviceability and safety of weld joints. The various limitations of human interpretation made the development of innovative computer-aided techniques for automatic detection from radiography images an interest point of recent studies. The studies of automatic defect inspection are synthetically concluded from three aspects: pre-processing, defect segmentation and defect classification. The achievement and limitations of traditional defect classification method based on the feature extraction, selection and classifier are summarized. Then the applications of novel models based on learning(especially deep learning) were introduced. Finally, the achievement of automation methods were discussed and the challenges of current technology are presented for future research for both weld quality management and computer science researchers.

The development of image sensor and optics enables the application of vision-based techniques to the non-contact dynamic vibration analysis of large-scale structures. As an emerging technology, a vision-based approach allows for remote measuring and does not bring any additional mass to the measuring object compared with traditional contact measurements. In this study, a high-speed vision-based sensor system is developed to extract structure vibration signals in real time. A fast motion extraction algorithm is required for this system because the maximum sampling frequency of the charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor can reach up to 1000 Hz. Two efficient subpixel level motion extraction algorithms, namely the modified Taylor approximation refinement algorithm and the localization refinement algorithm, are integrated into the proposed vision sensor. Quantitative analysis shows that both of the two modified algorithms are at least five times faster than conventional upsampled cross-correlation approaches and achieve satisfactory error performance. The practicability of the developed sensor is evaluated by an experiment in a laboratory environment and a field test. Experimental results indicate that the developed high-speed vision-based sensor system can extract accurate dynamic structure vibration signals by tracking either artificial targets or natural features.

Diagnosis of motor bearing faults under variable speed is a problem. In this study, a new computer-vision-based order tracking method is proposed to address this problem. First, a video recorded by a high-speed camera is analyzed with the speeded-up robust feature extraction and matching algorithm to obtain the instantaneous rotating speed (IRS) of the motor. Subsequently, an audio signal recorded by a microphone is equi-angle resampled for order tracking in accordance with the IRS curve, through which the frequency-domain signal is transferred to an angular-domain one. The envelope order spectrum is then calculated to determine the fault characteristic order, and finally the bearing fault pattern is determined. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method are verified with two brushless direct-current motor test rigs, in which two defective bearings and a healthy bearing are tested separately. This study provides a new noninvasive measurement approach that simultaneously avoids the installation of a tachometer and overcomes the disadvantages of tacholess order tracking methods for motor bearing fault diagnosis under variable speed.

Sparse component analysis (SCA) has been widely used for blind source separation(BSS) for many years. Recently, SCA has been applied to operational modal analysis (OMA), which is also known as output-only modal identification. This paper considers the sparsity of sources’ time-frequency (TF) representation and proposes a new TF-domain SCA under the OMA framework. First, the measurements from the sensors are transformed to the TF domain to get a sparse representation. Then, single-source-points (SSPs) are detected to better reveal the hyperlines which correspond to the columns of the mixing matrix. The K-hyperline clustering algorithm is used to identify the direction vectors of the hyperlines and then the mixing matrix is calculated. Finally, basis pursuit de-noising technique is used to recover the modal responses, from which the modal parameters are computed. The proposed method is valid even if the number of active modes exceed the number of sensors. Numerical simulation and experimental verification demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method.

Noncontact measure techniques, such as speckle photography,1 hologram interferometry,2 and laser Doppler vibrometry,3 have been developed for years and well applied in various fields. Compared to traditional measurement devices, such as accelerometer or linear displacement gauge, devices with noncontact approaches have a more flexible installation and provide intuitionistic exhibitions of the actual movements of the target without affecting its behavior. In some environments where traditional sensors do not have clear access or cannot work effectively, e.g., remote measurement targets or fields with high temperature or strong magnetic, noncontact measurement devices obviously have great advantages over conventional ones. However, most noncontact equipment requires high cost and strict construction structures, thus limiting the wide use of such systems in practical applications.
