Food trade system and global agri-food chains have become vitally important for feeding the world’s population and ensuring food security. Agricultural trade has been growing in both volume and value with every year. The emergent question in this context is whether the dependency on food imports along with the occurrence of trade deficits threaten food security. In this chapter, the authors analyze the dynamics of agricultural trade balance in the case of EU-27 countries based on the 2015–2019 timeframe. The study is focused on the economic aspects of agricultural trade, food security threats, exploitation of natural resources, and the dynamics of international marketing. Additionally, the chapter emphasizes the structure of agricultural trade balance along 24 categories of agricultural products as defined in the United Nations Comtrade Database. Food trade issues are approached per country by studying trade balances for particular categories of agricultural products and the aggregated trade balance deficit of a country. It is revealed that the EU-27s overall agricultural trade balance is permanently positive (the highest surplus observed in 2019), even though there exists chronic dependency on the import of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, edible fruits, oil seeds and oleaginous fruits, industrial or medicinal plants, as well as coffee, tea, mate, and spices. The authors conclude that Germany is facing the highest deficit in agricultural trade followed by Sweden and Portugal. The Netherlands, Spain, and France, on the contrary, experience a permanent surplus in agricultural trade.

Although the European business environment induces important premises and assures conditions in determining economic growth and social well-being, the determinant and existent connections between the evolution of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), business demography characteristics and the European socio-economic model have been scarcely studied in recent years. The dimensions of the European socio-economic model design a very specific framework in developing business demography and assuring a favorable environment for future SME development. The main aim of the manuscript is to investigate the evolution of the European SMEs sector and the perspective of business demography evolution to converge with exigencies of the European socio-economic model. In order to argue the research objective, eight specific and representative business demography variables were employed, from 12 European Union member states (EU-MS), during 2009–2017. Further, the SMEs’ performances, determined by changing the economic functional paradigm, were assessed. For proving this, an econometric model was designed considering labor productivity as an endogenous variable. Our preliminary analysis shows considerable differences in business demography indicators and SMEs development among all five socio-economic sub-models of the main European socio-economic model, proving a tight connection between European socio-economic models and SMEs’ performance and arguing the necessity of a paradigm convergence. Within some sub-models, there is clear evidence of clustering and convergence in terms of business demography and SMEs future development.

Important insight into the Central and Eastern European food industry, beyond traditional food safety (FS) management and reflects on its food safety climate or the human route of its food safety culture is provided. Novel FS climate self-assessment tool was developed and validated by 65 FS experts from governmental agencies, third party certification bodies, food sector associations, universities and food industry. Three original FS climate components: FS knowledge, business priorities and FS legislation, were introduced and their nine components were assessed in nine Central and Eastern European countries involving 470 food companies. FS knowledge was better assessed in big and medium sized than in small companies. Knowledge component was equally assessed as good, irrespective of the FS risk profile of the food company surveyed while certified FS management system was charted by higher FS knowledge scores within a same food company. Business priorities in Central and Eastern European food organizations were related to hygiene and food safety and were always put before profit regardless of the company size. Hygiene and food safety were seen equality as a critical business success factor irrespective of the associated level of riskiness. FS climate legislation component in all food organizations surveyed was assessed affirmatively. Central and Eastern European food companies seemed to avoid problems in cooperation and trust between food safety leaders and other employees, since they have perceived FS climate highly and similarly. EU operating food companies had comparable overall FS climate to non-EU companies mostly because they have equally perceived their business priorities and appropriateness of associated FS legislation. The only exception was the FS knowledge that was better assessed in EU than non-EU food enterprises.

This investigation provides an important insight into the Central and Eastern European food industry, beyond traditional food safety management and reflects on its food safety (FS) climate or the human route of its FS culture. Investigation was conducted in 10 Central and Eastern European countries involving more than 500 food companies. Overall FS climate was assessed as good. The availability of infrastructure was perceived the same in all countries although “resources” was the lowest scored climate component. Uncertainty avoiding national cultures had a stronger preference towards written FS procedures and instructions. FS climate was better assessed in bigger companies because small companies observed weaker availability of resources, smaller number of procedures and instructions and reduced risk awareness. FS communication and commitment were not affected by company size. The share of food companies without FS system was five times higher in small compared to big companies. No effect of FS management level or riskiness level on FS climate scores was apparent. Food companies seemed to avoid problems in cooperation and trust between FS leaders and other employees, since they have perceived FS climate similarly. The strongest FS climate segmentation in Central and Eastern Europe food companies was observed in terms of the EU membership status. EU operating food companies managed to develop a very good and distinctive FS climate, with better-perceived leadership, communication, commitment, resources and risk awareness than non-EU food companies. Transitional economic environment of non-EU countries have undesirably influenced the organisational and technological support in their companies and employees perceptions of FS climate.

Dairy farming is the most significant part of cattle raising. During the previous several years the volume of milk production has been maintained at a stable level, while there came to fall in number of dairy cows and number of farms engaged in dairy farming. Although the farms that own just a few heads of dairy cows usually step out the milk production, there are still a small number of farms specialized in dairy farming. The main paper objective is to present the economic effects of investment in the construction and equipping of dairy farm adequate for raising of 12 dairy cows. Economic analysis was based on the use of static and dynamic methods for investment assessment. Besides, there is also conducted the analysis of investment under the risk conditions (use of the break-even analysis). According to gained results (e.g. Internal rate of return, 11.98%, positive value of the Net present value, Payback period shorter than 5 years) the investment implementation is economically justified.

In this paper, we analyzed the tendencies of plant production in the Republic of Serbia and at the level of the territorial units Serbia-North and Serbia-South (NUTS 1), for the period 2009-2018 through the indicators of the coverage of areas and an average yield of 28 plant crops. The aim of the paper is to point out the differences in the representation of areas under different types of crops and to indicate the degree of their agreement between the mentioned territorial units by Spearman's correlation coefficient. For the analysis of the observed indicators, the methods of descriptive statistics, as well as Spearman's correlation coefficient, were used. The data indicate that the Serbia-North region is dominated by areas under cereals, industrial crops, peas and peaches, while the Serbia-South region is covered by areas under fodder crops, vegetable crops (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, onion, garlic, beans, cucumber, melons and watermelons) and perennial crops. The average yields of the observed crops differ significantly between the regions of Serbia-North and Serbia-South. Spearmen's correlation coefficient of the indicators of the coverage of areas indicated a high degree of stacking of areas under wheat and tobacco (0.927**), as well as areas under lucerne and clover with areas under fruit plantations. Also, a high degree of stacking of areas under maize and peas (0.798**) was established, but also between areas under sunflower and soya (0.891**).

This research analysed attitudes related to food waste sustainability and estimated amounts of animal origin food waste and food packaging waste discarded in Serbia. The field survey covered 494 respondents from Belgrade, Serbia. Results present their degree of agreement with nine selected food waste sustainability statements and their reported quantities of discarded animal origin food waste and food packaging waste. Our study showed respondents have a higher rate of agreement related to the negative social and environmental dimensions of food waste, while they have no opinions associated with the economic dimensions. Regarding animal origin food waste quantities, it is estimated that households dispose around 200 g of waste every week (11.3 kg per year) and slightly under 30 different pieces of food packaging. On an annual basis, 7,234 tons of CO2 emissions can be associated with animal origin food waste and 706.4 tons with food packaging waste in Serbia.

Vegetable production represents important segment of the Serbian agricultural output. Within the structure of produced vegetable, cabbage has significant share. Cabbage conservation, primarily for the winter period, in a form of sauerkraut (for preparation of salads and hot dishes) has long tradition both at national and international level. Sauerkraut production is usually in function of value added products generation at the farms oriented to vegetable production that boosts their long-term sustainability. The main goal of this article is to compare contribution margin gained at the farm involved in sauerkraut production made from conventionally or organically produced cabbage. One production year is observed (gained data refers to 2018). It could be concluded that pickling of organic cabbage allows creation of higher farm's income and contribution margin.

Proizvodnja voća ima značajnu ulogu u razvoju srpske poljoprivrede. U strukturi proizvodnje voća, jabuke imaju srazmerno veliki udeo.

This paper analyzes the economic effectiveness of vegetable production in a protected area in terms and in a manner that is characteristic of the analyzed area (Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina). Dynamic methods for evaluating the economic feasibility of the investment were applied to two models of vegetables production in greenhouses. Models represent completely alternative investments, so the choice between them is based on the net present value. Economic justification under risk conditions was checked using the scenario analysis. The results of the survey indicate that the investments in both models are justified both in optimal and risky production conditions. The model that includes the production of two crops is economically more efficient than the production of one crop per year. The same model will take precedence also in risky production conditions, as indicated by the higher expected net present value and lower value of the coefficient of variation. protected area; greenhouse; investments; vegetables; scenario analysis

Rad je tematski usmeren ka ekonomskim efektima uvođenja energije iz obnovljivih izvora (solarna energija) u proces proizvodnje maline (primarno aktivnost navodnjavanja). Cilj rada je da se oceni ekonomska efektivnost investiranja u podizanje i eksploataciju zasada maline i implementaciju neophodne opreme i mehanizacije, pri čemu ocena obuhvata dva investiciona scenarija, prvog konvencionalnog načina zasnivanja i korišćenja malinjaka, i drugog koji organizaciono uključuje i ulaganje u mobilni solarni robotizovani elektrogenerator. Metodološki, ocena ekonomskih efekata podrazumeva primenu dinamičkih metoda i metode za ocenu investicionih ulaganja u uslovima neizvesnosti (neto sadašnja vrednost, interna stopa rentabilnosti, vreme povraćaja i donja tačka rentabilnosti).

This paper presents an intelligent approach to integrated data collection and management system for irrigation and fertilisation of plants in agricultural production (specifically in apple plantations) applied to control and optimization of all parameters necessary for an adequate level of agricultural production. The approach tends to reduce investment costs, minimize power consumption and implement environmentally clean power production methods, as well as to apply proper treatment of chemical preparations in order to achieve economically viable integrated food production. Application of modern systems of complex sensor networks connected via mobile solar power generators as main node connection allows the collection of all data and parameters necessary for the continuity of integrated agricultural production. The mobile robotized solar power generator is also the executive device that manages complex hydraulic system for irrigation and fertilisation, treating the field with chemicals depending on available land, meteorological and environmental conditions.

The geographic concentration and regional specialization of small and medium-sized enterprises in many developed countries has significantly contributed to increasing their competitiveness in the international market and balanced regional development. Clusters, as a form of business association, are particularly important for small and medium-sized enterprises, which strive to take part in the highly competitive international market. The range of goals of internationalization is very wide—the increase of profit, risk reduction and dispersion, increasing the technological level etc. The clusters of the real sector have a significant impact on the increase and the dynamics of the country’s exports. Therefore, a new model of economic development for Serbia should be based on inter-related, export-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises of the real sector.

Rural tourism has been developing in Serbia since the 1970s. However, from the beginning of the 1990s, the development stopped. The development trend was only continued in the second half of the 1990s, and fast-paced development began in 2006. Rural tourism presents in various forms in Serbia. They are conditioned by natural geographic terrain characteristics, social and cultural elements, and strategic plans for tourism development. What appears as a problem in the development of rural tourism is the question of its sustainable development. The development of rural tourism should under no circumstances jeopardise the natural and social environment in the rural areas, as these aspects are the very basic tourist attraction and the “push and pull” force that animates the tourist demand. The goal of this chapter is to investigate the resources available in Serbia and show the possible directions in the rural tourism development, mainly based on the principle of sustainable development, as a precondition for the country's competitiveness on the tourism market.

The aim of this paper is to determine the economic viability of the electronic warehouse receipt registry introduction, as a step toward electronic warehouse receipts. Both forms of warehouse receipt paper and electronic exist in practice, but paper warehouse receipts are more widespread. In this paper, the dematerialization process is analyzed in two steps. The first step is the dematerialization of warehouse receipt registry, with warehouse receipts still in paper form. The second step is the introduction of electronic warehouse receipts themselves. Dematerialization of warehouse receipts is more complex than that for financial securities, because of the individual characteristics of each warehouse receipt. As a consequence, electronic warehouse receipts are in place for only to a handful of commodities, namely cotton and a few grains. Nevertheless, the movement towards the electronic warehouse receipt, which began several decades ago with financial securities, is now taking hold in the agricultural sector. In this paper is analyzed Serbian electronic registry, since the Serbia is first country in EU with electronic warehouse receipts registry donated by FAO. Performed analysis shows the considerable impact of electronic warehouse receipts registry establishment on enhancing the security of the system of public warehouses, and on advancing the trade with warehouse receipt.
