Digital transformation is perceived not only as a change in certain technology but also as a large transition that will ultimately change our lives for the better. Industry convergence, the key to digital transformation, entails, for firms, both various opportunities for innovation and the crisis of falling behind. Therefore, from the perspective of firms, it is critical to examine how digital transformation affects their industries and products as well as how they perceive and respond to digital transformation. This is ultimately a matter of how firms survive and maintain sustainable growth in this great upheaval of digital transformation. Based on the understanding of the concept of digital transformation, this study explores how high-growth firms perceive various aspects of digital transformation. The findings show that digital transformation involves a change of firms based on constant innovation, not simply the acceptance of technology, and that there is a large digital divide that depends on the firm size and industry type. Based on the above, this study derives implications in terms of the innovation activities of firms to ensure that digital transformation does not serve as a handicap and barrier for firms.

This research examines the evolution of the study on triple helix (TH) approaches to the investigation of regional innovation systems (RISs). Prior studies on TH‐based RISs have focused largely on complex interactions among innovation creating actors (i.e., university, industry, and government) and non‐market institutions in various regional contexts. Although there are a growing number of TH‐based RIS studies, they often ignore the evolutionary aspect of the RIS studies and implications for sustainability. Thus, herein we conduct a wide range of systematic literature review on the TH research in the RIS literature published from 1990 to 2017. The study identifies that the TH literature evolves into various N‐helix models in particular, gravitating toward stakeholders, internationalization, specialization and ecological conservation, which offers various implications for sustainability in the regional development context. In the ages of globalization, digitalization, and socio‐ecology, this study offers a comprehensive view on the TH research for sustainable development and suggests useful future research directions that academics and policymakers can benefit from.

This study aims to investigate the role of external network resources of emerging market ventures (EMVs) in shaping ventures’ entrepreneurial capability and achieving superior new product development (NPD) performance in the international marketplace. It integrates the extended resource-based view and knowledge-seeking perspectives of EMVs with the literature on entrepreneurship and international business. We collected survey data from 179 high-tech ventures in China and validated the model using structural equation modeling. Findings suggest that external network resources of Chinese ventures play a crucial role in driving their development of entrepreneurial capability, which in turn positively affects their international NPD performance. Moreover, findings elucidate the network condition in which they can facilitate the contribution of entrepreneurial capability to NPD performance. They also suggest that EMVs with well-developed entrepreneurial capability perform better in NPD for international markets when they are capable of developing international networks.

Emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNEs) are attracting significant scholarly attention in the international business and general management domain. The extant research has provided important insights into the EMNEs’ internationalization processes and whether the existing theories adequately explain their outward investment motives. This special issue aims to provide a platform suited to extend the current understanding of the rapid rise of EMNEs and examine the vital role played by strategic ambidexterity and its performance implications for the EMNEs. The current research on EMNEs has failed to adequately leverage strategic ambidexterity and link it with the post-entry performance of EMNEs. We argue that the strategic ambidexterity perspective offers valuable opportunities to understand the post-entry performance of EMNEs as they expand into developed and developing markets. The article also highlights important areas for future research by taking into account the current COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

This study investigates the extent to which international learning intent and different dimensions of international network searching (i.e., breadth and depth) contribute to innovation performance of emerging market small and medium-sized enterprises (ESMEs). We contend that simple international network searching or motivation for learning does not guarantee the successful innovation of ESMEs. The present study posits that the international explorative capabilities of these ESMEs enable them to transform knowledge from external network resources into innovation performance. We collected data from 204 China-based ESMEs and analyzed these data using structural equation modeling. Findings demonstrate that international learning intent and breadth of international network positively affect ESMEs’ own explorative capability and thus innovation performance. However, the depth of international network does not significantly influence international explorative capability. Using learning and network searching perspectives on ESMEs’ internationalization, this study elucidates that ESMEs can improve their own innovation performance by improving access to and application of external knowledge learned through extensive international partner networks.

This article examines the role of networks and global value chains (GVCs) and how they influence emerging economy small- and medium-sized enterprises’ (EE-SMEs) internationalization. Drawing on the insights, experiences, and perspectives of entrepreneurs and senior managers of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have originated from China, the study adopts qualitative approach and examines nine firms’ internationalization. We find that Chinese born-global manufacturing SMEs benefit from networks with quick insidership position into GVCs, but suffer from various obstacles that hinder their further development. The findings further indicate that network ties substantially facilitate EE-SMEs’ internationalization, but also restrict their future global development, as their low position within the GVCs impedes further business development and capability building. The case firms’ lower position within the GVCs weakens the networks’ influence on their GVC upgrading. The research identifies key enablers of GVC engagement and obstacles of GVC upgrading of the case firms which play an important role in the EE-SMEs’ internationalization. JEL CLASSIFICATION: M10; M16

Purpose In cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As), acquirers often fail to achieve the expectations they held when they made the M&A deals. This paper aims to propose that the risks of cross-border M&As can be mitigated by building and cultivating organizational resilience as a prime means of risk management. Design/methodology/approach The research examines risks associated with cross-border M&A and how such risks can be mitigated by developing resilience. It presents dual cases of acquisitions of the biggest branded mobile phone manufacturer in Taiwan. Findings The authors find that the acquirer faces multiple risks in cross-border M&A transactions, including financial, strategic and organizational, and process risks that arise from misalignment between the goal of the M&As and the post-acquisition performance of the target firms. Originality/value The research provides theoretical insights on organizational resilience and how it can mitigate the specific risks involved in cross-border M&As, thereby developing coherent organizational resilience processes.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to answer why some multinational enterprises (MNEs) fail within the international business (IB) domain.Design/methodology/approachConceptually, the study takes an organismic approach to MNE failure. Methodologically, it adopts an elite interview approach derived from the Delphi technique. Respondents are 39 IB and strategic management academics.FindingsThe paper finds that MNE failure is rooted in strategic leadership and capabilities (i.e. internal deterioration of organizational resources and strategies) and institutional pressures and differences, and these factors lead to deterioration of institutional legitimacy for an MNE.Originality/valueThe paper conducts a review of the firm failure and foreign divestment literature and undertakes an organismic approach to the analysis of MNE failure in the IB context. The paper provides useful insights on developing and implementing both market and non-market strategies for overcoming MNE internationalization failure.

This study combines the resource-based view of the firms and region-based view of the strategy (i.e., a 2R-based view) to shed light on the crucial roles of firm-specific resources and region-specific heterogeneity within the context of China, a large emerging economy. The study explains the variations in internationalization levels among service multinational enterprises (MNEs). Based on a large sample analysis of Chinese service MNEs, our findings demonstrate that MNEs with good cost efficiency and few intangible resources exhibit great propensity for international expansion, thereby achieving high internationalization level. Chinese service MNEs located in a coastal region or a region with well-developed institutional environments achieve high internationalization level as well. These findings support a U-shaped relationship between the internationalization of service MNEs and their performance. Our research findings confirm our predictions from the 2R-based view, which provides valuable insight into the regional development and international strategy of MNEs from emerging economies.

This study validates the relationship between the perceived brands of Korean wave and country-of-origin image (COI) of Korea on the basis of categorization and stereotype content theories. Data collected from local consumers in Vietnam are analyzed using structural equation modeling. Our findings show that perceived brand globalness significantly affects the competence and warmth of COI. The perceived brand localness only has a positive effect on warmth. COI positively influences foreign consumers’ attitudes and purchasing intentions. Emotional and cognitive aspects are considered to explain the complex relationships between foreign consumers’ perceived brands and COI and their effects on purchasing behavior. Our study shows the positive roles of Korean wave brands as a cue to stimulate competent and warm stereotypes of COI.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how innovation-related firm-specific ownership advantage (FSA) plays a role in developing the competitive advantage of Chinese multinationals when they internationalize. Design/methodology/approach Based on a review of the existing literature concerning foreign direct investment by emerging economy multinational enterprises (EMNEs), the authors identify that numerous studies explain this phenomenon on the basis of their location-bound country-specific advantages. However, such views do not fully explain the key underlying factors behind the rapid rise and success of many EMNEs as these firms rapidly internationalize and develop global competitiveness in developed markets. The current research explores three leading innovative Chinese EMNEs from the engineering sector: BYD, Sany Heavy Industry and CSR China. Findings The authors find that EMNEs’ knowledge, and particularly their innovation-creating technological knowledge, has contributed greatly to their successful internationalization. The illustrative cases show that the three firms have now moved beyond the infant to the mature stage of EMNE development through developing their technological knowledge in order to realize FSA through internationalization. This study helps in contributing fresh reflections to the continuing debate concerning the causes of internationalization and global competitive development by EMNEs and the role of their FSAs in these processes. Originality/value This is one of the few studies which have demonstrated that some of the EMNEs do possess firms’ specific advantage which helps explain their innovative capabilities, competitive advantages and subsequent internationalization patterns.

This article examines technology exchange mechanisms in technological platform partnerships between software and hardware firms. Such firms form complementary partnerships to develop innovative technological products in the mobile telephony sector. Data were collected from 110 high-tech firms which have formed technological platform partnerships, and analyzed data, by using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The results show that a focal firm’s technological complexity and technological adaptation to its partner’s platform increase its dependence on a partner, which in turn positively affects value co-creation in such partnerships. Complementary technological collaboration through adaptation-dependence between technological partners helps resolve knowledge accessibility and technological integration for value co-creation and innovation between heterogeneous partners from different high-tech industries. This study provides a clue as to how technological partners co-create value in the high-tech industry.

This paper investigates the mediating effect of learning intent in transforming local suppliers’ potential absorptive capacity into realized absorptive capacity and its impact on exploitative and exploratory innovation. Using survey data from 155 auto parts manufacturers in Pakistan, we find that local firms’ realized absorptive capacity enables them to develop both exploitative and exploratory innovations. The findings further suggest that local suppliers’ learning intent mediates the relationship between potential and realized absorptive capacity which in turn lead to both types of innovation. In the context of the emerging economy of Pakistan, local suppliers’ absorptive capacity is found to be critically important in spurring exploitative and exploratory innovation, but learning intent enables realized absorptive capacity and thus in conjunction with realized absorptive capacity supports innovation. Consequently, there would be a strong case for policy intervention to assist emerging economy firms in building their absorptive capacity and strengthening their learning intent as a route for promoting innovation and improving their value added position in the global value chains of multinational enterprises.

This article investigates the role of learning orientation in the post-entry performance of international new ventures (INVs) by examining the relationships of niche strategy, network resources and learning orientation with the multi-dimensional post-entry performance of INVs. Based on the INV internationalisation literature, we develop and validate a conceptual model, using a sample of 147 INVs from the two relatively small and open economies of New Zealand and Australia. The results show that the learning orientation of INVs positively mediates the relationship between niche orientation and network resources and post-entry performance of INVs. Our study indicates that learning orientation is an important capability through which focused strategies and resources of INVs may influence their multi-dimensional post-entry performance in terms of operational, financial and overall effectiveness measures. We draw key implications for research on post-entry behaviour of INVs by explicating the role played by the learning capabilities of the firms, and how these capabilities interact with their strategies and resources in enhancing the post-entry performance of INVs.

Recent research suggests that the capabilities needed for the survival of international new ventures (INVs) may be at odds with the original aims that had brought them into the international markets. INV mortality is exacerbated by uncertainty and lack of familiarity with the host market environment, which elevates the liabilities of newness, smallness, and foreignness in the initiating companies. We investigate the key factors that determine the post-entry survival of developing economy INVs by analysing in-depth seven software INVs originating in the developing economy of Pakistan. These INVs survived the 2000 dotcom crisis and the 2008 global financial crisis, and continue to grow. Based on a dynamic capability view on the INVs’ internationalization and survival from sensing-seizing-reconfiguration angles, we find the founders’ entrepreneurial orientations and network development capabilities (sensing), specialized product focus and niche market development (seizing), and transformation and renewal capabilities (reconfiguration) are the key capabilities that enhance the post-entry survival of these INVs. Importantly, we find that a stable leadership and the post-entry international experience of the leadership team continuously feed into facilitating the creation and maintenance of dynamic capabilities. This paper identifies key strategic aspects that determine the post-entry survival of the developing economy INVs

This paper investigates the influence of corporate governance on the performance of modern Chinese firms. Prior studies were inconclusive about the relationship between corporate governance and firm performance. Little research investigates the performance implications of board structure in the post-institutional-transition era in China. Based on agency and resource dependence theories, this paper examines the impacts of board composition and leadership structure on the performance of Chinese manufacturing firms that went public on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges in 2010. The findings show that separating the posts of CEO and chair promotes better performance. However, appointing a larger proportion of outside independent directors to the board insignificantly affects performance. This research provides partial support for agency theory and extended insights into corporate governance in emerging economy firms. Copyright © 2017 ASAC.
