The essence of innovation lies in knowledge, which is why open innovation opens the door to knowledge transfer with agents outside the organization. In order to comprehend the joint scientific trajectory of these two areas of knowledge, the aim of this study is to identify and analyze the main indicators of scientific behavior involved in the research field related to the link between open innovation and knowledge transfer or knowledge sharing concepts through bibliometric and network analysis. The results show clear European leadership in scientific production developed in universities. In addition, the high quality of the main sources of diffusion infers publications of good scientific quality. The most recognized source of knowledge used in new research is directed towards university-company relationships in an open innovation environment. Network analysis related to keywords has allowed us to define the most interesting, relevant fields of research, highlighting the importance acquired by topics such as ‘communication’, ‘inter-organizational context’ and ‘education’, to better focus on future research of the scientific community. It can be concluded that the scientific development of both concepts is an active field in the academic community, and also, that new key terms appear, opening new paths of research.

During the last decade, different concepts, methodologies, and technologies have appeared, evolving industry toward what we know today as the fourth industrial evolution or Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and Advanced Manufacturing (AM). Based on both, Supply Chain (SC) is presented as the relevant process that sets the sustainability of manufacturing and, therefore, is defined as a key term in a sustainable approach to I4.0. However, there are no studies that analyze the evolution of science in the fields of I4.0 and AM together. In order to fill this gap, the aim of this research work is to analyze the tendencies of science research related to I4.0 and AM by conducting a bibliometric and network analysis and also to generate a new contribution through the analysis of scientific trends related to SC and Sustainable Supply Chain (SSC) within this scientific context, for the time span 2010–2019. The results show that the number of publications is growing exponentially and the most active countries are Germany and the U.S., with Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen University being the most productive organization and Tecnologico de Monterrey the most collaborative. The analysis of the scientific terms allows us to conclude that the research field is in a growth phase, generating up to almost 4500 new terms in 2019.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the main levers of change in the context of industry 4.0 and the metal additive manufacturing subgroup (MAM) is the most relevant in industry. This contribution analyses research trends and the academic, industrial and social impact of the research conducted in both areas. The articles published between 2010 and 2019 in the field of engineering research, with a total of 6,692 on AM technologies and 1,734 on MAM technologies, have been downloaded from the Web of Science database. In order to analyze who the main actors are and the academic impact, a bibliometric and web indicator analysis is applied. The social impact of the research carried out is visualized through Twitter citations and, finally, its industrial impact is visualized through its connection with industrial patents. The study carried out allows us to conclude that the scientific development between AM and MAM is similar, however, the general public shows less interest in MAM. The transfer of knowledge to industry and the market is still low. The results obtained will offer advances in the knowledge and visualization of research production trends in AM and MAM technologies. Considering their potential to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) recast set the objective that by December 2020 all new buildings shall be nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (NZEB). This study gives an overview of those buildings that follow the Passive House (PH) certification standard in Spain, focusing on the analysis of some fundamental driving forces (population, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), climatic zones, Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and building construction/refurbishment specialists) that may explain the regional distribution of these type of buildings. Main conclusions illustrate that the “climate zone effect” may have a relevant effect on their geographical location. In contrast, the evolution of the real estate market is not related with their location, and that despite the GDP and the population having a certain effect, the number of PH Constructors is found to be a fundamental variable in explaining the number of buildings in Spanish regions. Therefore, a policy destined to raise awareness and to improve the technical training of these specialists and to extend this standard (or similar ones) to new and refurbished multifamily houses in big cities, may be fundamental to increase the number of NZEBs in this country. Keywords: nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (NZEB); Passive House (PH); Energy Certification; Spanish Building Code ; Energy performance; Climate Change.

The fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) has been defined as a promising way to avoid road transport greenhouse emissions, but nowadays, they are not commercially available. However, few studies have attempted to monitor the global scientific research and technological profile of FCEVs. For this reason, scientific research and technological development in the field of FCEV from 1999 to 2019 have been researched using bibliometric and patent data analysis, including network analysis. Based on reports, the current status indicates that FCEV research topics have reached maturity. In addition, the analysis reveals other important findings: (1) The USA is the most productive in science and patent jurisdiction; (2) both Chinese universities and their authors are the most productive in science; however, technological development is led by Japanese car manufacturers; (3) in scientific research, collaboration is located within the tri-polar world (North America–Europe–Asia-Pacific); nonetheless, technological development is isolated to collaborations between companies of the same automotive group; (4) science is currently directing its efforts towards hydrogen production and storage, energy management systems related to battery and hydrogen energy, Life Cycle Assessment, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The technological development focuses on technologies related to electrically propelled vehicles; (5) the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and SAE Technical Papers are the two most important sources of knowledge diffusion. This study concludes by outlining the knowledge map and directions for further research.

This article uses text mining techniques to determine the time lag of knowledge transfer between research activity and technology development in bioremediation, complementing these with advanced visualization techniques in order to extract patterns that could be of interest for decision making in this field. The emergence patterns in this field have been identified and a method based on subject-action-object (SAO) semantic structure is proposed for characterizing such patterns, using 2-word tuples. Our results show that technology developments in heavy metal bioremediation swiftly follow scientific advances, as opposed to developments in bioremediation of organic chemical components. The science mapping reveals three distinct areas: 1) heavy metal remediation and phytoremediation; 2) aerobic and anaerobic remediation of chemical elements; and 3) bioremediation techniques for treating specific contamination sources such as oil. The emergence analysis points at activities involving energy recovery by bioremediation, and shows an increasing amount of technologies involving specific strains of microorganisms, which could gain significant traction in this field in an estimated time horizon of ten years. Our SAO approach, tested on the data sample corresponding to these strains, proves to be useful for characterizing the emerging technologies when applied to instrumental concepts.

Patents are a means of protecting inventions developed by firms, institutions or individuals, and they may be interpreted as indicators of invention. Patents indicators convey information on the processes of inventive activities. Therefore, patent statistics will assess science and technology (S&T) activities. Besides, additive manufacturing (AM) has become a revolutionary technology that is changing medical science. For this reason, the patent statistics will allow us to monitor what is the state of the inventive activity of AM in medical applications. The database used in order to retrieve patent information is Patseer and the data have been analyzed through the analytics package called Quick Stats. From the data obtained, it can be concluded that, additive manufacturing in medical applications is an emerging technology with huge market potential. Undoubtedly, the core of invention is located in United States, followed by Germany, United Kingdom and China somewhat behind. Firms are the main holders of legal rights, and the firm’s market value and the knowledge diffusion of technology are ensured by the technological diversity and the number of forward citations presented by patents.

The construction industry worldwide is not known as an innovative sector, being its level of productivity and efficiency lower than other sectors, such as manufacturing. If we focus on the Spanish construction sector, these negative characteristics are further aggravated due to the inefficient working practices of many companies; this being a common feature of the sector and a consequence of the poor levels of innovation of the companies that compose it. The objective of the presented research is to identify the key drivers and variables that foster innovation in the Spanish construction sector, through statistical analysis of data obtained from a questionnaire to the companies in the sector. Once these variables have been identified, a specific innovation model for Spanish construction companies have been developed, represented in the form of an equation, which may be used for predictive purposes.

Highlights•The evolution of ITs towards more social, less complicated and less expensive tools has enabled knowledge sharing to be implemented at the smallest enterprises.•Emphasize the use of groupware tools and social networking software on the smallest SMEs.•The IT tools that need more structural requirements are most used in large SMEs.•The collaborative platforms enable the knowledge transfer in a more simple and informal manner, due to a higher person-to-person contact. AbstractThis paper categorizes in terms of size, the behaviour of the Basque small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the use of information technology (IT) tools as enablers of knowledge management practices. As part of this research, this article concludes as well about the suitability of collaborative tools in organic and flexible less informal organizations, such as small enterprises. The evolution of technology trends towards the use of collaborative platforms to support knowledge capturing and sharing in a less standardized way. Therefore, this characteristic of collaborative tools allows the smallest SMEs to have at their disposal a flexible tool for knowledge sharing.

Few other sectors have such a great impact on sustainability as the construction industry, which has expressed growing concerns in this regard for a long time, mainly focusing on the environmental dimension. The sustainability assessment methodology tested in this study is the Integrated Value Model for Sustainable Assessment – MIVES, applied to industrial buildings. In addition to traditional requirements (environmental, economic, and social), this non-commercial methodology involves other aspects of sustainability that are also important (employee safety, functionality, and corporate image) to establish a means of evaluation. Its reliability is tested here through its application to three case studies. MIVES is an AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process)-based Multi-Criteria Decision-Making methodology that can be applied in any field. In this study, its specific focus is on improvements to sustainability in construction.

Earthshipek eraikuntza konbentzionalaren eredua erabat eraldatu dute.Azken urteotan, hain zuzen, bioeraikuntzaren oinarriak aplikatuz hainbat etxebizitza mota eraiki dira, baina haien artean earthshipak izan dira etxebizitza konbentzionalekiko haustura nabarmenena ekarri dutenak. Hala, gaur egun praktikan dagoen eraikuntza-ereduak eraldaketa bat igaro behar duela esateak ez digu ekarpen berririk egiten, jakina baita, eredu horrek ez duela helburu gisa jendartearen eta ingurumenaren oreka. Gure ingurua etengabe urratzen duen eraikuntza-ereduak muga jo du edo joko du. Kontu horri erreparatzen dio, hain zuzen, earthship filosofiak: inguruaren eta gizakien arteko oreka erabatekoa helburu modura duen eraikuntza-eredua. Lehenengo earthshipa Taosen (Mexiko Berrian) eraiki zen orain dela berrogei bat urte, eta gaur egun, mundu osoan zehar 3.000 baino gehiago daude, baina Euskal Autonomia Erkidegoan guztiz ezezaguna da eraikuntza mota hori. Horregatik, ikerlan honetan aztertuko da earthshipak zer diren, berauen oinarriak zein diren, eta Euskal Autonomia Erkidegoan ere bideragarriak ote diren.

This article's objectives are to analyze the trends related to knowledge management process in small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) and to compare these findings with the conclusions of other research studies designed for SMEs and to examine the level of formality in knowledge management processes according to the size of enterprise. As well, to propose a model suited to the characteristics of the small business. The information is collected from 22 Basque Country SMEs grouped into industrial clusters, through a survey that is conducted to identify the use of practices related to knowledge management. Results show that informal practices figure prominently in the day to day of the SME and that the knowledge management process is not standardized but that is performed by the collaborative work between people, among others. Besides, the size of the SME acts as a factor in regard to the level of formality in knowledge management process. This study helps SME managers understand where the organizational knowledge is found within organizations and, consequently, to not neglect the importance of people in keeping competitiveness high. The article provides new information on how firms located in a particular region of Spain perform in relation to knowledge management, and it could be considered a sort of benchmarking practice on the behavior of SME in managing knowledge, which will be useful for the organization when taking management decisions.
