Currently, different forms of ransomware are increasingly threatening Internet users. Modern ransomware encrypts important user data, and it is only possible to recover it once a ransom has been paid. In this article we show how software-defined networking can be utilized to improve ransomware mitigation. In more detail, we analyze the behavior of popular ransomware — CryptoWall — and, based on this knowledge, propose two real-time mitigation methods. Then we describe the design of an SDN-based system, implemented using OpenFlow, that facilitates a timely reaction to this threat, and is a crucial factor in the case of crypto ransomware. What is important is that such a design does not significantly affect overall network performance. Experimental results confirm that the proposed approach is feasible and efficient.

A recent trend involves exploiting various information-hiding techniques to empower malware-for example, to bypass mobile device security frameworks or to exfiltrate sensitive data. The authors provide an overview of information-hiding techniques that can be utilized by malware. They showcase existing and emerging threats that use different types of data-hiding mechanisms (not just those adopting classical covert channels), with the goal of monitoring these threats and proposing efficient countermeasures.

There are a dozen messaging protocols proposed for IoT systems. Choosing one for a new design is complicated, and a non-optimal selection can result in slower development and higher design costs. This paper aims to help select appropriate protocols, considering IoT applications’ specificity and communication requirements. We have identified the protocol features that are significant for the design and operation of IoT systems. This paper gives a substantial comparison of the protocols using the features and is based on a thorough analysis of the protocol specifications. The results contain an assessment of the suitability of the protocols for the defined types of IoT devices and the identified communication purposes. We conclude the comparison with some recommendations of the protocol selection and usage.

Recently, various artificial intelligence (AI)-based methods have been proposed to support humans in detecting disinformation and fake news. The goal of this article is to provide a meta-analysis, and formally evaluate, compare, and benchmark various classes of fake news detection approaches. To this end, the following paper performs a comprehensive analysis of the performance-related results of different models using a range of benchmark datasets. The performed and disclosed meta-analysis compares the statistical significance of differences in a range of performance metrics, including precision, $F1$ -score, recall, and balanced accuracy (BACC). The utilized approach features the $5$ $\times$ $2$ cross-validation methodology. The models undergoing the formal evaluation constitute state-of-the-art (SOTA) solutions meeting acceptance criteria. The evaluated approaches draw from the most recent advancements in natural language processing (NLP). The outcome of this work is the formal benchmarking and meta-analysis of fake news detection methods that can be further utilized by the research community, but more importantly by the practitioners and decision-makers that counter fake news on a daily basis, e.g., in press agencies, homeland security agencies, fact-checkers, and so on. This work is the natural extension of the authors’ previous systematic analysis of fake news detection methods and authors’ own fake news detection methods based on machine learning (ML)/artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.
