Although there are e-health systems for the care of elderly people, the reactive characteristics to enhance scalability and extensibility, and the use of this type of system in smart cities, have been little explored. To date, some studies have presented healthcare systems for specific purposes without an explicit approach for the development of health services. Moreover, software engineering is hindered by agile management challenges regarding development and deployment processes of new applications. This paper presents an approach to develop health Internet of Things (IoT) reactive applications that can be widely used in smart cities for the care of elderly individuals. The proposed approach is based on the Rozanski and Woods’s iterative architectural design process, the use of architectural patterns, and the Reactive Manifesto Principles. Furthermore, domain-driven design and the characteristics of the emerging fast data architecture are used to adapt the functionalities of services around the IoT, big data, and cloud computing paradigms. In addition, development and deployment processes are proposed as a set of tasks through DevOps techniques. The approach validation was carried out through the implementation of several e-health services, and various workload experiments were performed to measure scalability and performance in certain parts of the architecture. The system obtained is flexible, scalable, and capable of handling the data flow in near real time. Such features are useful for users who work collaboratively in the care of elderly people. With the accomplishment of these results, one can envision using this approach for building other e-health services.

Cloud computing enables the evolution of modern software application design. Applications based on microservice architecture are an example. Meanwhile, multiclouds are widely accepted by enterprise as an infrastructure strategy; however, challenges remain. The autonomous and distributable nature of modern applications, as well as the complexity of multicloud infrastructure, often make universal application deployment management impractical. This phenomenon may further hinder application quality and efficiency. Therefore, deployment resource control and topology discovery in the multicloud infrastructure environment is an intriguing area of cloud computing research. This paper proposes a framework to manage application deployment in the multicloud environment. The framework uses a policy-based deployment control to automatically select and provide deployment resources from the multicloud infrastructure, and it subsequently uses topology discovery to visualize and verify the actual deployment. The proposed framework design is introduced in the paper, and a proof-of-concept prototype is implemented. Experiments in empirical scenarios are conducted. The experimental results indicate that the proposed framework is effective in controlling deployment resources and presenting actual deployment across clouds.

The Internet of Things (IoT) brings plenty of opportunities to enhance society’s activities, from improving a factory’s production chain to facilitating people’s household tasks. However, it has also brought new security breaches, compromising privacy and authenticity. IoT devices are vulnerable to being accessed from the Internet; they lack sufficient resources to face cyber-attack threats. Keeping a balance between access control and the devices’ resource consumption has become one of the highest priorities of IoT research. In this paper, we evaluate an access control architecture based on the IAACaaS (IoT application-Scoped Access Control as a Service) model with the aim of protecting IoT devices that communicate using the Publish/Subscribe pattern. IAACaaS is based on the OAuth 2.0 authorization framework, which externalizes the identity and access control infrastructure of applications. In our evaluation, we implement the model using FIWARE Generic Enablers and deploy them for a smart buildings use case with a wireless communication. Then, we compare the performance of two different approaches in the data-sharing between sensors and the Publish/Subscribe broker, using Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) protocols. We conclude that the integration of Publish/Subscribe IoT deployments with IAACaaS adds an extra layer of security and access control without compromising the system’s performance.

This article presents a comprehensive study of human physiology to determine the impact of body mass index (BMI) on human gait. The approach followed in this study consists of a mathematical model based on the centre of mass of the human body, the inertia of a person in motion and the human gait speed. Moreover, the study includes the representation of a building using graph theory and emulates the presence of a person inside the building when an emergency takes place. The optimal evacuation route is obtained using the breadth-first search (BFS) algorithm, and the evacuation time prediction is calculated using a Gaussian process model. Then, the risk of the building is quantified by using a non-sequential Monte Carlo simulation. The results open up a new horizon for developing a more realistic model for the assessment of civil safety.

In recent years, a new business paradigm has emerged which revolves around effectively extracting value from data. In this scope, providing a secure ecosystem for data sharing that ensures data governance and traceability is of paramount importance as it holds the potential to create new applications and services. Protecting data goes beyond restricting who can access what resource (covered by identity and Access Control): it becomes necessary to control how data are treated once accessed, which is known as data Usage Control. Data Usage Control provides a common and trustful security framework to guarantee the compliance with data governance rules and responsible use of organizations’ data by third-party entities, easing and ensuring secure data sharing in ecosystems such as Smart Cities and Industry 4.0. In this article, we present an implementation of a previously published architecture for enabling access and Usage Control in data-sharing ecosystems among multiple organizations using the FIWARE European open source platform. Additionally, we validate this implementation through a real use case in the food industry. We conclude that the proposed model, implemented using FIWARE components, provides a flexible and powerful architecture to manage Usage Control in data-sharing ecosystems.

The following document explores the viability of the usage of consumer-grade, ARM-based single board computers as a power saving alternative to the traditional monolithic x64-full-server based approach.By taking advantage of several capabilities provided by such devices, such as low cost, low power consumption and low on-time, the authors finally propose a scalable, energy-efficient, ARM-based cloud infrastructure. To that end, we start analyzing the current offerings in terms of capabilities, net cost, processing power and power consumption, comparing them with the relevant server-oriented offerings. We subsequently explore the adequacy of several metrics to model on-budget raw data processing, considering full-system wattage under nominal usage conditions. The low initial investment and long-term affordability of this approach results in quite a relevant case of application to Edge Cloud computing scenarios.

Scheduling resources in Cloud distributed videoconferencing systems presents a complex challenge not resolved yet. Traditional scheduling models are not applicable due to the particular characteristics of such type of systems. One of the main issues is estimating how many resources will consume a new client that connects to a videoconferencing session. Otherwise, it is difficult to decide where to allocate new requests. This paper proposes a new metric to perform this estimation basing on different parameters of the sessions. To validate the metric we set up a real scenario comparing the behaviour with and without the proposed metric. The conclusion is that the metric enables the design of more advanced and precise scheduling algorithms. Furthermore, thanks to this metric, resources are used more efficiently resulting in performance improvements and cost saving.

Highlights•We propose a distributed architecture for video conferencing servers (MCUs).•The MCU is divided into simple parts that broadcast streams, OneToManys.•We describe and evaluate the new control architecture that allows distributed deployment.•This solution provides improved scalability and deployment granularity. AbstractNew technologies are making videoconferencing more ubiquitous than ever. This imposes a big challenge for scaling software MCUs, the traditional videoconferencing servers. We propose, implement and test an architecture for a distributed MCU designed to be deployed in a Cloud Computing environment. The main design idea is to break monolithic MCUs into more simple parts: broadcasters. These broadcasters can be deployed independently on the fly. This achieves a higher deployment granularity and flexibility. We describe the control architecture that allows this distribution and prove the viability of the system with a fully developed implementation.

One of the key factors for a given application to take advantage of cloud computing is the ability to scale in an efficient, fast and reliable way. In centralized multi-party video conferencing, dynamically scaling a running conversation is a complex problem. In this paper we propose a methodology to divide the Multipoint Control Unit (the video conferencing server) into more simple units, broadcasters. Each broadcaster receives the media from a participant, processes it and forwards it to the rest. These broadcasters can be distributed among a group of CPUs. By using this methodology, video conferencing systems can scale in a more granular way, improving the deployment.

Multi party videoconference systems use MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) devices to forward media streams. In this paper we describe a mechanism that allows the mobility of such streams between MCU devices. This mobility is especially useful when redistribution of streams is needed due to scalability requirements. These requirements are mandatory in Cloud scenarios to adapt the number of MCUs and their capabilities to variations in the user demand. Our mechanism is based on TURN (Traversal Using Relay around NAT) standard and adapts MICE (Mobility with ICE) specification to the requirements of this kind of scenarios. We conclude that this mechanism achieves the stream mobility in a transparent way for client nodes and without interruptions for the users.

P2P streaming today is one of the most challenging techniques to deliver real-time streaming on the Internet. Incentive mechanisms make a crucial part of the P2P algorithms in order to avoid uncooperative and eliminate malicious behavior. In this paper we present a monetary incentive mechanism based on the taxation incentive schemes. We use a model of a P2P streaming service to apply the idea and validate the quantitative effect on both the users' and the provider's welfare in the system. A billing model based on QoS levels for the perceived video that offers a remuneration inventive for the cooperative users, contributes to the P2P streaming because of the two main reasons: increases provider's welfare in terms of monetary benefit and saves infrastructure cost; increases users' welfare in terms of increased cooperation and motivation to participate in the streaming.

This paper tackles the optimization of applications in multi-provider hybrid cloud scenarios from an economic point of view. In these scenarios the great majority of solutions offer the automatic allocation of resources on different cloud providers based on their current prices. However our approach is intended to introduce a novel solution by making maximum use of divide and rule. This paper describes a methodology to create cost aware cloud applications that can be broken down into the three most important components in cloud infrastructures: computation, network and storage. A real videoconference system has been modified in order to evaluate this idea with both theoretical and empirical experiments. This system has become a widely used tool in several national and European projects for e-learning and collaboration purposes

This paper proposes a new methodology focused on implementing cost effective architectures on Cloud Computing systems. With this methodology the paper presents some disadvantages of systems that are based on single Cloud architectures and gives some advices for taking into account in the development of hybrid systems. The work also includes a validation of these ideas implemented in a complete videoconference service developed with our research group. This service allows a great number of users per conference, multiple simultaneous conferences, different client software (requiring transcodification of audio and video flows) and provides a service like automatic recording. Furthermore it offers different kinds of connectivity including SIP clients and a client based on Web 2.0. The ideas proposed in this article are intended to be a useful resource for any researcher or developer who wants to implement cost effective systems on several Clouds.

The number of online real-time streaming services deployed over network topologies like P2P or centralized ones has remarkably increased in the recent years. This has revealed the lack of networks that are well prepared to respond to this kind of traffic. A hybrid distribution network can be an efficient solution for real-time streaming services. This paper contains the experimental results of streaming distribution in a hybrid architecture that consist of mixed connections among P2P and Cloud nodes that can interoperate together. We have chosen to represent the P2P nodes as Planet Lab machines over the world and the cloud nodes using a Cloud provider's network. First we present an experimental validation of the Cloud infrastructure's ability to distribute streaming sessions with respect to some key streaming QoS parameters: jitter, throughput and packet losses. Next we show the results obtained from different test scenarios, when a hybrid distribution network is used. The scenarios measure the improvement of the multimedia QoS parameters, when nodes in the streaming distribution network (located in different continents) are gradually moved into the Cloud provider infrastructure. The overall conclusion is that the QoS of a streaming service can be efficiently improved, unlike in traditional P2P systems and CDN, by deploying a hybrid streaming architecture. This enhancement can be obtained by strategic placing of certain distribution network nodes into the Cloud provider infrastructure, taking advantage of the reduced packet loss and low latency that exists among its datacenters.
