The present study was conducted by cultivating tomato (Solanum lycopersicum ‘Provence’) using varied inorganic mulching to investigate soil hydrothermal environment and tomato characters under unheated greenhouse cultivation in the cold zone of China. A total of 6 different treatments were adopted: no mulching (control), white film mulching (white film), black film mulching (black film), the white film with hole mulching (white hole), the black film with hole mulching (black hole), and snake skin bag mulching (snake skin). Inorganic mulching treatment significantly improved soil temperature and moisture, water use efficiency, tomato yield, and reduced soil water consumption. There was no significant difference observed in the variation of daily mean soil temperature between different mulching treatments, and the variation was in the range of 1.95–2.20 °C, which was significantly lower compared with the control (3.42 °C). The daily mean soil moisture varied significantly after different mulching treatments, with the highest level achieved by snake skin (23.37%), followed by black hole (22.55%), white hole (22.08%), white film (21.48%), black film (20.12%), and control (18.78%) in descending order. According to the research results, plastic-hole mulching, which include white hole and black hole treatments, performed better in maintaining soil temperature and moisture.

Water resources are scarce in the Northeastern Loess Plateau, and water cellar water (WCW) is a vital water resource available in the vast rural areas of the region. The quality of WCW was assessed by principal component analysis (PCA) and Nemerow’s pollution index (NPI) for different rainfall catchment areas, depths, and storage times. Eleven indicators were measured, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), F−, Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, Na+, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+. The results show that the tap water quality in the rural areas of the Northeastern Loess Plateau is above the second level and meets the drinking water standard (DWS), which is similar to the tap water quality in the region. The main component score of water quality from tile roof + cement ground (I) is 0.32, and the Nemero index is 0.41; the principal component score of water quality from cement ground (I) is 0.45, and the Nemero index is 0.29; the principal component score of water quality from trampled land (I) is 0.59, and the Nemero index is 0.44; the principal component score of water quality from tile roof + trampled land (II) is 1.87, and the Nemero index is 1.10. The rainwater harvesting catchment area of tile roof + cement ground (I) ensured the highest water quality, followed by cement ground (I), trampled ground (I), and tile roof + trampled ground (II). The water quality of the catchment area for artificially collected rainwater (roof tile surface, cement ground, etc.) was better than that of the original soil (trampled ground). The highest water quality was found at a storage time of 1 year (I), followed by 2.5 years (I), and 2 months (II). A depth of 4 m (I) contributed to the highest water quality, followed by 2 m (II), 3 m (II), and 1 m (II). Water quality improved with the increasing depth of WCW. The rainfall and WCW in the area were weakly alkaline, and the groundwater was contaminated with NO3−. PCA’s water quality assessment results were similar to the NPI method, indicating that both methods can be used in combination for unconventional water quality assessment.

This research has experimentally investigated the interactive influences of salinity stress and leaf thinning on the growth, yield, water use efficiency, and fruit quality of cherry tomatoes cultivated under soilless conditions. The experiment was conducted in a plastic house (width of 5 m and length of 11 m) located in Gifu University. The seedlings were transplanted in a randomized complete block design with six plants per treatment, and a total of 36 plants in 18 pots (two plants per pot). The experiment received salinity treatment (no-salinity and salinity with electrical conductivity (EC) of 0.8 dS m−1 and 3.0 dS m−1, respectively) and leaf thinning treatment (no leaf thinning, basal leaf thinning and intersegment leaf thinning except the closest two). The experimental results showed that salinity stress negatively affected the growth, yield, marketable yield and water use efficiency of cherry tomatoes, but positively affected the fruit quality. Basal leaf removal significantly decreased the biomass, chlorophyll, and yield but significantly improved the fruit quality; that basal leaf removal coupled with salinity stress showed no influence on plant growth, but reduced the yield and greatly improved the fruit quality. Besides, tender leaves around truss removal significantly decreased the biomass, chlorophyll, yield, and water consumption, but improved the fruit quality; that tender leaves around truss removal coupled with salinity stress greatly decreased the biomass, chlorophyll, yield, and water consumption, but significantly improved the fruit quality.
