We present a sequential quadratic optimization (SQO) algorithm for nonlinear constrained optimization. The method attains all of the strong global and fast local convergence guarantees of classical SQO methods, but has the important additional feature that fast local convergence is guaranteed when the algorithm is employed to solve infeasible instances. A two-phase strategy, carefully constructed parameter updates, and a line search are employed to promote such convergence. The first phase subproblem determines the reduction that can be obtained in a local model of an infeasibility measure when the objective function is ignored. The second phase subproblem then seeks to minimize a local model of the objective while ensuring that the resulting search direction attains a reduction in the local model of the infeasibility measure that is proportional to that attained in the first phase. The subproblem formulations and parameter updates ensure that, near an optimal solution, the algorithm reduces to a classical SQO method for constrained optimization, and, near an infeasible stationary point, the algorithm reduces to a (perturbed) SQO method for minimizing constraint violation. Global and local convergence guarantees for the algorithm are proved under reasonable assumptions and numerical results are presented for a large set of test problems.

Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) are one of the most popular architectures for image generation, which has achieved significant progress in generating high-resolution, diverse image samples. The normal GANs are supposed to minimize the Kullback–Leibler divergence between distributions of natural and generated images. In this paper, we propose the Alpha-divergence Generative Adversarial Net (Alpha-GAN) which adopts the alpha divergence as the minimization objective function of generators. The alpha divergence can be regarded as a generalization of the Kullback–Leibler divergence, Pearson χ 2 divergence, Hellinger divergence, etc. Our Alpha-GAN employs the power function as the form of adversarial loss for the discriminator with two-order indexes. These hyper-parameters make our model more flexible to trade off between the generated and target distributions. We further give a theoretical analysis of how to select these hyper-parameters to balance the training stability and the quality of generated images. Extensive experiments of Alpha-GAN are performed on SVHN and CelebA datasets, and evaluation results show the stability of Alpha-GAN. The generated samples are also competitive compared with the state-of-the-art approaches.

Nonconvex constrained stochastic optimization has emerged in many important application areas. Subject to general functional constraints, it minimizes the sum of an expectation function and a nonsmooth regularizer. Main challenges arise because of the stochasticity in the random integrand and the possibly nonconvex functional constraints. To address these issues, we propose a momentum-based linearized augmented Lagrangian method (MLALM). MLALM adopts a single-loop framework and incorporates a recursive momentum scheme to compute the stochastic gradient, which enables the construction of a stochastic approximation to the augmented Lagrangian function. We provide an analysis of global convergence of MLALM. Under mild conditions and with unbounded penalty parameters, we show that the sequences of average stationarity measure and constraint violations are convergent in expectation. Under a constraint qualification assumption, the sequences of average constraint violation and complementary slackness measure converge to zero in expectation. We also explore properties of those related metrics when penalty parameters are bounded. Furthermore, we investigate oracle complexities of MLALM in terms of the total number of stochastic gradient evaluations to find an ϵ-stationary point and an ϵ-Karush -Kuhn -Tucker point when assuming the constraint qualification. Numerical experiments on two types of test problems reveal promising performances of the proposed algorithm. We present two matrix-free methods for solving exact penalty subproblems on product sets that arise when solving large-scale optimization problems. The first approach is a novel iterative reweighting algorithm (IRWA), which iteratively minimizes quadratic models of relaxed subproblems while automatically updating a relaxation vector. The second approach is based on alternating direction augmented Lagrangian (ADAL) technology applied to our setting. The main computational costs of each algorithm are the repeated minimizations of convex quadratic functions which can be performed matrix-free. We prove that both algorithms are globally convergent under loose assumptions and that each requires at most $O(1/\varepsilon^2)$ iterations to reach $\varepsilon$-optimality of the objective function. Numerical experiments exhibit the ability of both algorithms to efficiently find inexact solutions. However, in certain cases, these experiments indicate that IRWA can be significantly more efficient than ADAL.

A typical wireless sensor network (WSN) has multiple sensors, each of which obtains noisy observation of one common physical event and sends the observation to a fusion center (FC) for post-processing. This paper provides a comprehensive research on robust linear transceiver design in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI) in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wireless sensor networks. For the CSI uncertainty, the classical ellipsoid model is assumed, where channel estimation errors live in an ellipsoid. Two robust beamforming problems are considered—i) the worst-case mean square error (MSE) minimization with limited power and ii) sumpower minimization with guaranteed worst-case MSE. For both problems, centralized and decentralized solutions are developed. Moreover an interesting fundamental relation between the metrics of signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and MSE has been presented, which extends our proposed solutions to handle transceiver design when SNR is considered. Extensive numerical results are presented to confirm our findings.
