Adsorption by activated carbons (AC) is an effective option for phenolic wastewater treatment. Three commercial AC, including coal-derived granular activated carbons (GAC950), coal-derived powdered activated carbons (PAC800), and coconut shell-derived powdered activated carbons (PAC1000), were utilized as adsorbent to study its viability and efficiency for phenol removal from wastewater. Pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and the Weber–Morris kinetic models were used to find out the kinetic parameters and mechanism of adsorption process. Further, to describe the equilibrium isotherms, the experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. According to the experimental results, AC presented a micro/mesoporous structure, and the removal of phenol by AC was affected by initial phenol concentration, contact time, pH, temperature, and humic acid (HA) concentration. The pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir models were found to fit the experimental data very well, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 169.91, 176.58, and 212.96 mg/g for GAC950, PAC800, and PAC1000, respectively, which was attributed to differences in their precursors and physical appearance. Finally, it was hard for phenol to be desorbed in a natural environment, which confirmed that commercial AC are effective adsorbents for phenol removal from effluent wastewater.

Traditional Chinese medicine has become an important pillar of "Healthy China" and the national medical system in recent years. Due to the wide range of raw materials in traditional Chinese medicinal materials (TCMM), the issue of metals has attracted more and more attention. In this paper, a comprehensive review of public reports on metals in TCMM in recent decades was conducted. From a total of 1969 reported articles, a total of 296 research reports on metals in TCMM were screened. The 296 reports involved 255 species in 85 families, with a total of 274 medicinal materials. These TCMM were divided into taproot-type, leaf-type, flower and fruit-type, herba-type, stem-type and bark-type medicinal materials according to the medicinal parts. The content of five metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr) in these TCMM was noted, and the distribution rules for metals were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) For the distribution of metals in different medicinal parts, Pb was mainly distributed in leaves; Cd was mainly distributed in flowers and fruits, stems and leaves; Hg was mainly distributed in barks; As was mainly distributed in stems; Cr was mainly distributed in stems, flowers and fruits. (2) The areas with the highest risk of metal residues were the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, south China, and southwest China. (3) Among all types of TCMM, herba-type medicinal materials had the highest risk of metal content. (4) Combined with the pharmacopoeia metal limit standards implemented in 2019, the exceeding rate of Pb in TCMM was the highest, with a maximum value of 37.67%; among the six major types of TCMM, the medicinal materials with the highest exceeding rate were herba-type medicinal materials, among which Hg had the highest exceeding rate of 23.08%; in terms of medicinal parts, the highest exceeding rate of metals was in leaf-type medicinal materials, among which Pb had the highest exceeding rate of 37.67%. On the whole, the situation in regard to metal residues in TCMM was acceptable, but it cannot be ignored. It needed to be paid attention to in the industrialization and management of TCMM.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has accumulated a wealth of ecological wisdom and is regarded as an outstanding cultural and medical resource in China. However, in the context of serious environmental pollution, the potential harm caused by TCM materials (TCMMs) due to toxic heavy metals has seriously affected the sustainable development of TCM. Cadmium (Cd) is an internationally recognized heavy metal contaminant. In this paper, 270 reports on Cd in TCMMs were screened from 1969 publications covering 243 species in 81 families. According to the source of the TCMMs, the data were divided into the following categories: aboveground part, bark, flower and fruit, herb, leaf and rhizome. The temporal dynamics of the Cd content and its correlations with the habitats and categories (parts) of TCMMs were also studied. The results show that 22.05 % of the investigated TCMM samples exceeded the relevant domestic standards (Cd≤0.3 mg/kg), among which the maximum Cd content was 17.75 mg/kg. Myrtaceae and Syzygium aromaticum were the family and species with the highest mean Cd content, respectively. Regarding the source of TCMMs of great concern, the mean Cd content of TCMMs decreased in the order of herb > aboveground part > flower and fruit > leaf > rhizome > bark. In addition, in terms of the spatiotemporal distribution, the spatial distribution of the mean Cd content of TCMMs was significantly higher on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, followed by Southwest China. When comparing different times, more serious Cd pollution of TCMMs existed after 2000, and the highest mean Cd content was observed in 2000-2004. In summary, soil acidity must be decreased and the cultivation conditions of Cd-hyperaccumulators such as Ligusticum chuanxiong and Lonicera japonica must be modified, in conjunction with a scientific health risk assessment, to ensure the sustainable development of TCMMs.
