Biography

Dr. Zaky’s research aims to establish coastal integrated marine biorefinery (CIMB) systems that rely on marine resources (seawater, marine microorganisms, and marine biomass) in the production process in a coastal-based biorefinery system. The proposed systems refrain from using arable land and freshwater throughout the production chain, so they potentially archive a negative water footprint and a net negative carbon emissions value. Linking the CIMB systems with other renewable energy systems (e.g., tide, wind, and solar energy) could improve the overall efficiency and economic feasibility of systems. Dr. Zaky has published several papers on marine-based biorefinery. His research was featured in more than 50 newspapers in different languages. It has also appeared in multiple newspapers, radio, and TV programs (in Arabic) discussing issues related to the higher education system, agriculture policies, environmental sanitation, democracy, and freedom of speech.
