Biography

The Cuban honeybee population is meanly an European population with natural resistance to Varroa destructor. This resistance, which includes the development of hygienic behaviour such as detecting, removing, and recapping infested cells, are comparable to resistant African and Africanized populations. Currently, there are no Africanized honeybees in Cuba, likely due to the island's isolation and the ban on the importation of bee. However, four RNA viruses and Nosema ceranae have been detected in infested honeybees across the island. The most prevalence virus was Deformed Winged Virus (DWV). Both DWV-A and DWV-B master variants were detected, with DWV-B been the dominant variant. The DWV-B/A recombinant was also detected indicating that despite Cuba’s isolated nature the pattern of DWV evolution mirrors that found in the USA and Europe.
